Kentec launches fire panel configuration software

Kentec Electronics, a manufacturer of life-critical control systems, has launched the Loop Explorer 2 (LE-2) software to provide installers with a faster, more secure means to program and configure fire control panels that delivers a highly secure means of controlling access to the engineering software and access to Kentec’s technical support. LE-2 supersedes the LE-1 and will be used to commission all Kentec’s analogue, addressable control panels, providing one software application, with a common interface, look and feel, to facilitate all products. It supports upgrade paths to newer fire control panels, including from Syncro to Taktis, helping installers to upgrade life safety systems with minimal disruption to end users. It will also support new devices from Kentec’s detector partners as and when they become available. Each LE-2 license holder will benefit from automatic update alerts and access meaning the system is commissioned and maintained using the very latest version and ensures optimum performance, providing a healthy system. Another benefit of having an LE-2 license includes access to Kentec’s technical support, training and product specialists. Installers will also be placed onto Kentec’s customer relationship management (CRM) system, enabling Kentec to better monitor and respond to installers’ individual technical support and training needs. Keeping true to the Kentec ethos of providing open access software engineering tools to commission and support its panels, The LE-2 software is available to all fire systems installers and Kentec Installation Partners (KIPs), who have enjoyed prior access ahead of its official launch. A new study launched by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is aiming to analyse and monitor the health of firefighters amidst new research confirming the link between the profession and the development of cancer. Working in collaboration with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), this health monitoring research project uses blood and urine samples from participating firefighters to test them for cancer and other health issues. The results of these tests will be used to identify the number of firefighters with cancers and other diseases that have been a result of long-term exposure to the toxic contaminants in fire. This initiative follows on from the publication of new research in January 2023, which found that instances of cancer among firefighters aged between 35 and 39 is up to 323% higher than for members of the general population in the same age category. This research also found that firefighters are significantly more likely to die from cancer, heart attacks, stroke and several other diseases. The new research study is the first of its kind to be carried out for firefighters in the UK, despite the World Health Organisation ruling that occupational exposure as a firefighter is carcinogenic. With the new study analysing samples from firefighters at TWFRS proving successful, the FBU have made it clear that they are keen to roll out the health monitoring scheme to fire and rescue services across the UK. Riccardo la Torre, National Officer, FBU, said: “I’m proud of our members in Tyne and Wear for participating in the first firefighter health monitoring of its kind in the UK, and in our union for commissioning this research. Tyne and Wear is setting a positive example for how fire services can assist in making real steps forwards to save firefighters’ lives from occupational cancer and diseases. “Health monitoring must be rolled out across the UK, as a vital part of serious measures to make firefighting a safer profession. No one should face illness, or worse, from going to work. We can and must be the generation to make the profession safer.” The research, which has been commissioned by the FBU, is being led by UCLan, which is home to experts in fire chemistry and toxicology. Anna Stec, Professor in Fire Chemistry and Toxicity at the university, added: “This is the first study of its kind in UK and the research brings to light the wide range of occupational hazards that firefighters face. “It is vital that firefighters can continue to do their jobs as safely as possible, and the research shows that measures such as health monitoring and reducing exposure from contaminants at the workplace will play an important part in protecting firefighters. “We hope that working with organisations like TWFRS will not only help us to create a safer working environment in Tyne and Wear, but will also introduce a change to the wider sector.” Wayne Anderson, FBU Secretary for Tyne and Wear, said: “This is a vital step for the fire and rescue sector, and we are pleased that the fire service in our region is working with us to make this research a priority. “The evidence shows that firefighters’ health is at risk because of exposure to toxic contaminants in fire. Comelit-PAC accommodates fire safety at Booth Hall

Comelit-PAC’s fire system has been installed by CFS Systems on an 800-room student accommodation complex, dedicated to serving Crewe’s new medical health science campus. The Apollo Buckingham Health Science Campus (ABHSC) offers degrees in biomedical sciences as well as medical foundation and conversion courses for health workers. The campus is majority owned by the University of Buckingham and Apollo and could have at least 3,000 students at the Crewe site by 2024. Offering on-campus student accommodation at Booth Hall, the development presents 800 bedrooms, with a mix of communal spaces and facilities, including extended learning zones, meeting rooms and a gymnasium. As part of the duty of care and responsibility to students and staff at Booth Hall, CFS Systems carried out a full risk assessment of the site to install the latest fire safety systems, with a nine-panel network and over 2000 devices. Says Amanda Watson, Head of Operations at Apollo Buckingham Health Science Campus: “The University of Buckingham’s Crewe campus offers students the opportunity to gain experience and relevant skills, combining a variety of courses with authentic clinical and laboratory experiences in a multi-professional learning environment”. “Situated on the grounds of the Crewe campus, the student-friendly town is ideal for both learning and socialising.  Student welfare is a top priority and this includes at Booth Hall, ensuring fire safety and security measures are kept up to date and compliant. Here, CFS Systems carried out a complete risk assessment and made recommendations, advising us on the best course of action, including installation of Comelit-PAC systems.” CFS Systems selected Comelit-PAC’s specialist fire safety solution, featuring a user friendly touch screen system, installing eight addressable panels, one per block and a new style repeater panel in the main reception area. How Search and Rescue Teams find survivors after earthquakes

Following a disaster, such as the earthquake in Turkey and Syria in February 2023, every second counts. Urban Search And Rescue (USAR) teams must act quickly and efficiently within the first few hours/days following the disaster to save entombed victims as quickly as possible. In the early hours after a major disaster, when many areas need checking, emergency teams conduct rapid searches to maximise the opportunities for saving lives. Rescuers usually finish searching at a site within a few hours, then move to the next area. They can use this stage to identify zones where a deeper search would be worthwhile. Specially trained search and rescue dogs (K9 teams) are employed to move quickly in the rubble in order to sniff out signs of life. Indeed, these trained dogs detect live human scent, even when a victim is buried deep in rubble. The full search and rescue This phase of operations, also called “technical search” locates, and rescues deeply trapped survivors. The search and rescue of entombed victims requires the involvement of search and rescue specialists with very specific USAR equipment to detect and locate victims, communicate with them and then extract and rescue them. USAR teams often use victim location dogs, but they also use electronic victim search equipment: With seismic sensors/acoustic sensors, UWB rescue radar (Ultra-Wide Band – Ground penetrating radar) USAR search cameras. These 3 technologies complement each other and allow rescue teams to move faster. Seismic detectors (also called listening device) are designed to detect and locate the position of conscious buried survivors under the rubbles following a collapse. Ultra-sensitive, seismic sensors use seismic technology to detect the smallest sounds/vibrations caused by survivors buried under rubbles (scratching, hitting, shouting, etc.) and help pinpoint their location. What is seismic technology? Seismic detectors, like a wave receiver, sense vibrations which resonate and circulate in the different materials of the collapsed building and amplify them via a control box. The technical search specialist can “listen” via audio headsets and “view” the audio signal via a bar graph on the control box for vibrations made by victims under the rubble. How to use seismic sensors? First of all, placed on the same line, the team leader deploy the seismic sensors by placing them on the surface of the rubble. Then, a long whistle sounds to demand total silence. One of the rescuers hits the ground with a heavy metal bar and an interpreter asks out loud “Is anyone there? We’re the rescue teams.” They listen in total silence and wait for the victim’s “response” (scratching, hitting, shouting, etc.) to help locate them. 3.1. If no response or vibrations are detected: rescuers continue through the zone to be covered, repeating the same method. The objective is to map the zone by identifying the location of buried victims. 3.2. If the sensors receive a signal (represented by sounds in the audio headset and via an active bar graph on the control box): The intensity of the signals received by each sensors is compared. It is then necessary to focus on the sensor which receives the strongest signal and gradually bring the two others closer in a triangle, until they all display the same intensity. The position of the victim is identified when all sensors have a signal at the same intensity. One of the latest innovations in terms of victim location equipment is the UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) radar detector (also called GPR – Ground Penetrating Radar). This radar detector is designed to detect and locate the position of entombed victims following a collapse. It uses the Ultra-Wide Band technology (highly sensitive stabilized band) to detect the movements of a buried victim. It can detect the smallest movements – even the breathing of an unconscious person! What is UWB technology? UWB is a radio modulation technique based on the transmission of very short impulses. The UWB sensor is a transmitting/receiving device with an ultra-sensitive UWB sensor producing electromagnetic waves that can pass through construction materials. It can scan/probe through 50cm of dense concrete or any other construction material such as bricks, asphalt, sand, wood, tiles, plastic, plaster and glass. (Note that electromagnetic waves cannot pass through metal surfaces, damp surfaces (clay), or water) and can detect the movement of buried victims. How to use the UWB rescue radar? The UWB sensor must be placed in contact with the rubble by a rescuer and should be regularly moved according to a virtual search grid so that the radar can survey below the surface. The objective is to map the zone by identifying the location of buried victims. During this time, a second search and rescue specialist monitors progress on the remote wireless control box in real time. The UWB detector scans the ground by sending waves that pass-through building materials. If these waves return with a gap in length, this indicates that there is movement and it may be a buried victim. When the UWB radar sensor detects a movement under the rubble, the screen displays an icon indicating the depth at which the movement is found, as well as the frequency of the movements (strong/weak) to determine whether it is a human or not. This means survivors can be detected very quickly in real time. Its high sensitivity and the stability of its signal allow detection with precision down to 1 meter: Strong and irregular movements such as the movement of a conscious victim’s arm up to 30 meters in free field conditions. Or regular weak movements, such as the chest movements/breathing of a victim, even if unconscious, up to 10 meters in free field conditions. Once the survivor is detected and located, a second step involves visually verifying that it is a human with search camera. Equipped with a microphone/speaker module, it can also be used to communicate with the person to determine their assistance needs. Telent ensures communications for Avon Fire and Rescue Service

Unfailing critical communications for Avon Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) will continue thanks to a major network upgrade by communications specialist Telent. Telent designed, tested and deployed a future-proof solution to replace the back-up Paknet service connecting the station end to the control room. Station End systems are the critical link between control rooms and fire stations, firefighters and fire appliances and are connected using a network that has both primary and secondary back-up bearers. Avon FRS turned to Telent when the technology it was using for secondary back-up bearers was scheduled to be withdrawn from service. The new solution ensures firefighters can respond to an emergency even if the main network goes down. Oshkosh Airport Products, a division of Pierce Manufacturing, announced Grand Canyon West Airport, located northwest of Peach Springs in Mohave County, Arizona, has taken delivery of its first Oshkosh Airport Products Striker 4×4 ARFF vehicle. Tragic train crash in Greece

A collision between two trains in Greece has led to the tragic death of almost 36 people and injuring dozens of others, as authorities announced the death toll had risen on 1 March 2023. The crash took place near the city of Larissa, north of Athens, and although the circumstances that led to the crash are unclear, several train cars derailed. The train was en route from Athens to Thessaloniki, and collided with a cargo train just before midnight on 28 February 2023. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted today offering “deepest condolences”, writing: “My deepest condolences to the president of Greece and the Greek people for the loss of life in the train collision in northern Greece. The people of Ukraine share the pain of the victims’ families. We wish a speedy recovery to all the injured.” According to the Greek fire brigade, 66 of 85 people injured in the crash have been taken to hospitals close to Larissa, with six in intensive care. Since the crash, the President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited the site and told Reuters news agency, “Unfortunately, I have to interrupt my visit in order to be close to my people, to support those who need it.” A police investigation has begun to ascertain the cause of the crash, and witnesses to the scene have begun to give their testimonies. Proper hydration is critical to help firefighters perform at their best and avoid health consequences that the combination of intense heat, physical exertion, and loss of fluids can cause. However, with so many demands on budget and resources, many volunteer fire departments struggle to obtain the water they need to keep their firefighters hydrated during long incidents or disasters such as wildfires. To help departments meet this need, Anheuser-Busch partnered with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) in 2019 to create the Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters program. In 2022, 1.5 million cans of emergency drinking water were delivered to 450 volunteer fire departments across 46 states to help them prepare for wildfire response. Departments were selected through an application process and had to meet certain requirements, including being at least 50% volunteer and serving a population of 25,000 or less. While most water was allocated through the general application period in March, departments actively fighting wildfires throughout the year could utilise the rapid response request to receive an emergency donation. All recipients of this year’s and previous years’ water donations can be viewed on their website. The Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters program is an expansion of Anheuser-Busch’s longtime commitment to providing clean, safe drinking water to communities impacted by natural disasters. Since the program began, 6.5 million cans of water have been distributed to more than 1,400 volunteer fire departments across nearly all 50 states. “We are proud to partner with Anheuser-Busch to make sure our wildland firefighters have the water they need to stay hydrated and functioning at their best,” said NVFC chair Steve Hirsch. “Hydration is critical to the health and safety of firefighters, and we thank Anheuser-Busch for recognising and addressing this critical need for our nation’s volunteer responders.” The general application period for the 2023 Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters program will be open March 15-31. Tax increase for Nottinghamshire fire services approved

Households in Nottinghamshire are due to pay an extra £5 on their annual council tax bill after councillors have approved a maximum increase on the tax. Nottinghamshire Fire Authority has given the go-ahead for the rise to cover fire services for 2023/24. The rise followed the authority’s U-turn on £2million of proposed cuts to fire services in Nottingham. The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) have called it as a “fantastic result” for the city. The authority had planned to stop night shifts at West Bridgford Fire Station while reinstating Ashfield’s, while removing two fire engines from London Road and Stockhill stations. The increase was approved unanimously at a meeting on Friday. Of 1,800 people who responded to a public consultation, 80% of those supported the council tax increase to enable Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to continue funding the services. Ben Selby of the FBU said: “This is a fantastic result for the people of Nottinghamshire. “These cuts would have inevitably increased fire service response times, putting the lives of those that live and work in the affected areas at an increased risk.” The £5 increase for an average Band D property is the largest allowed without the need for a local referendum. Residents in the county are facing additional hikes in council tax rates, as Nottinghamshire County Council plans to raise its bill. The authority plans to raise its charges to an extra £53.05 and £61.88 per year for Band A and B homes respectively. Meanwhile, Nottingham City Council plans to raise bills by the maximum 4.99%.
