Fires in unsprinklered buildings

In recent weeks the same pattern has been repeated in the news of industrial and warehouse fires; images of a significant fire, large plume of smoke, and significant resources drawn from across a wide geography to tackle them. It is clear that when a fire in a commercial or industrial building breaks out it can be devastating.  If not suppressed quickly the results can be catastrophic with the fire service frequently unable to save the building. With recent figures showing the average cost of a large warehouse fire is £5.9m1, businesses must consider the impact and scale of fire and its consequences. Tom Roche, Secretary of the Business Sprinkler Alliance provides an insight into fires in unprinklered buildings and the disproportionate use of resources. From large complex buildings with automated handling and complex storage arrangements to much smaller scale warehouses, buildings face huge challenges in the face of a fire and substantial resources are required to contain them.  Statistical data for industrial and commercial fires for the period of 2011/12 to 2020/21 indicate there were 2,307 fires recorded where the spread of fire impacted either the whole building or more than two floors.  These fires required the attendance of more than four fire and rescue service vehicles and the time at scene of the fire was more than one hour. In short, this equates to a fire with this impact 4.5 times per week during that 10 year period.2 As recently as 13th March 2023, firefighters were called to a large fire at an unsprinklered warehouse in Andover. The devastating blaze tore through a family-owned furniture business and a neighbouring tenant on a busy industrial estate. The early morning fire at Dormy House required 100 firefighters, 12 appliances and specialist equipment including aerial ladder platforms and high-volume pumps from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and neighbouring counties to tackle the blaze.  The fire sent plumes of toxic black smoke over this congested area. The fire service reported that 90% of the predominantly one storey, 10 year old building was destroyed by the fire which also spread to Urban Retreat, a cosmetics and perfume mail order business next door. It is interesting to note that this fire took place in a modestly sized building with a footprint of no more than 3,500m2. The fire service worked hard to protect surrounding properties yet the intervention of 100 firefighters and all their resources could not stop the fire in a building of this size. Industrial fires impact far larger premises with similar results and with potentially larger impacts. Just five days later on March 18th, a blaze broke out at the Savannah Rags clothes warehouse in Mansfield and completely destroyed the building.  It required 15 fire crews and again more than 100 firefighters from the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to contain it. Similar to the fire in Hampshire five days earlier, this fire also required huge resources including an aerial ladder platform in order to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes. The building did not have the benefit of an automatic sprinkler system. Another two businesses counting the cost and damage of a destructive fire are on an industrial estate in Corby. In the early hours of April 25th, fire crews from Northampton Fire and Rescue Service were called to a major fire in a warehouse unit which housed two businesses. This building was again a modestly sized floor area of around 2,000m2. At the height of the fire, there were nine fire engines tackling the flames with appliances from Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. The fire and rescue service contained the fire but were unable to save the building which was completely destroyed. In a little over one month, we have seen three destructive fires and three destroyed buildings. The fires might well have been contained but the buildings still need to be demolished and dismantled due to the severity of the fire. Environmentally, the disposal of the damaged building will be controlled and even the water used in the fire will have to be carefully treated. The last element on the water used at the fires in Andover, Mansfield and Northampton deserves some consideration. The firefighters have worked hard using thousands of litres of water as their principle means to control the event. The images from each event show multiple hose streams in operation but the total amount of water used is not currently known. Water industry guidance for a one to two hectare industrial site indicates it will require a water supply capable of delivering a minimum of 35 litres per second (2100 l/min)3, the equivalent of around fourteen generous baths full of water every 60 seconds. Previous work on water used in fire events has led to various formulae and discussions on the level of water needed to attack and control a fire, requiring hundreds of cubic metres of water over the length of a fire incident. Needless to say the larger the fire, the more water that would be needed. We should therefore be asking ourselves does this make sense from a resource standpoint when we view the outcome? If we were to go through our history of looking at some of these significant fires, there is the same pattern of behaviour where the fire and rescue service attend and need additional resources from other areas.  They work to contain the fire but the outcome is largely the same, the building is not saved. It points to the fact that for such buildings the unit of control is the building and not a smaller compartment within it. Something many would be surprised by. As the size of the building gets larger, this will challenge the fundamental ability of the fire and rescue service to access the building and the seat of any fire. (FGD), the true innovators in optical flame detection, focus on the daily challenges that impact productivity, safety and the bottom line with innovative solutions that reduce false alarms in the most challenging of applications.  Aircraft hangars pose significant fire risks for multiple reasons, some of which are: They have a large, open layout. To serve their purpose, aircraft hangars need to be big and open, this can make fire and smoke difficult to control.   They house large equipment. Aircraft hangars store large aircraft and spacecraft, which are at risk for fires themselves. Lastly, they store combustible materials. Aircraft hangars usually have storage rooms where highly flammable materials (jet fuel, chemical additives, etc.) are kept.  For the reasons listed above, fire safety experts have long warned of the risks associated with aircraft hangars. All structures must comply with certain building codes and fire protection regulations, but aircraft hangars have their own set of stricter rules in NFPA 409. According to the NFPA, it “helps safeguard life and property through requirements for the proper construction and fire protection of aircraft hangars used for aircraft storage, maintenance, or related activities.” Despite the standards in place, aircraft hangars and tanker facilities still pose a challenge when it comes to fire detection and protection, so the best technologies must be put in place to help counteract this.   Dr. Eliot Sizeland C.Eng MInstMC is Vice President of Business Development, Fire & Gas Detection Technologies explores, exclusively for International Fire Buyer magazine, flame detectors for unique aircraft environments where applications demand heightened immunity to false alarms such as helidecks, aircraft hangars for storage and maintenance operations as well as road tanker loading islands.  Triple IR flame detectors  Triple IR detectors are virtually immune to false alarms and can have extremely long detection distances to some fire types. There are, however, wide performance variations from brand to brand as no two triple IR detectors are the same.  A triple IR detector has three sensors, each sensitive to a different IR wavelength. The IR radiation emitted by a typical hydrocarbon fire is more intense at the wavelength accepted by one sensor, usually around 4.5 microns, than the other two. The IR energy detected at 4.5 microns relates to the products of combustion of the hydrocarbon fire – the main component being carbon dioxide (CO2).  FGD has developed a special IR3 configuration for applications where the presence of exhaust (combustion) gases from engines and turbines is known to cause false alarms for competing devices.  This unit has been named the FlameSpec CO2L (pronounced cool) detector.  The FlameSpec CO2L IR3 and IR3-HD configurations have been independently tested and approved by Factory Mutual (FM). In addition to fire-detection performance FM tested the detector with a wide range of modulated and unmodulated false alarm sources. The sources used are widely found in industrial applications, for example, arc welding, electric arcs, sunlight, sunlight with rain droplets, heated vessels, and lights.  Helideck applications  False alarms offshore are a genuine concern for production and safety. Should a helicopter engine downdraft induce a false alarm on approach to a helideck the firefighting system could activate automatically thereby creating a safety concern for all onboard the aircraft.  The FLS-IR3-HD has an embedded HD camera which can be viewed remotely from a control room or shore-based facility thereby providing live CCTV coverage of the Helideck area. This feature is particularly suited to facilities operating in remote locations, like a NUI.  The live video feed provides real time incident status and allows a more accurate and informed response to be taken by control-room operators.  A further benefit of this device is that HD colour video and data of events are stored quickly to non-volatile memory within the detector for post incident investigation. Recordings start one minute before detection and continue for up to four minutes.  Aircraft hangars  In aircraft hangars jet engines and auxiliary power units (APUs) along with maintenance operations (like hot work) present significant sources of false alarm for traditional IR3 detectors.  Aircraft hangars vary in size, utilisation, and the number of aircraft they house.  Each hangar can be classified as of one of four hangar group types, in compliance with NFPA 409.  The classification depends on the construction, building dimensions, door height, and the types of fire risks present.  It’s important to therefore understand that fire detection and protection systems must be designed to the unique characteristics and needs of the facility.  Optical flame detectors are used extensively in aircraft hangars as they can cover a large area and respond quickly to a fire. The detectors are usually positioned looking towards the wing tips, thereby providing coverage above and below the aircraft’s wings. Where helicopters are housed in a hangar it is more common to direct detection towards the engine area.  Aircraft hangars have fixed automatic fire suppression systems.  Damage to plant & equipment by accidental activation of these systems can cause millions of dollars in damage to property and machinery.  As an example, the cost to clean and repair an engine that has been doused with foam has been documented as being around 50% of its replacement… To read the full article see our latest issue here. Quick Fire – Pete Davies

We are delighted to sit down with Pete Davies, Business Development Manager at Fireco, and hear about his unique observations on the fire industry, as well as how the music industry’s loss is the fire industry’s gain!  What does ‘fire protection’ mean to you?  In a nutshell, I think fire protection means exactly that; protection from fire. Using risk assessed, common sense practices and applying relevant technology to not only minimise the risk of fires starting in the first place, but to ensure that people and property are safe and suffer minimal amounts of damage should a fire occur.   What made you want to work in the industry?  I actually fell into the fire industry. Previous to Fireco I had 10 years experience in sales, selling everything from white goods insurance to discount coupons for restaurant chains. It was only when I snagged a position as a sales executive at Fireco that I really felt like the things I was selling actually made a lasting impact. Fireco took my development seriously and I found the whole industry fascinating. That was 11 years ago and I’ve not looked back.  If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?  “Don’t do it that way! You’ll never make it that way!!”. In all seriousness, I’d probably just tell myself that everything will work itself out and not to beat yourself up too much. That was always a big thing for me when I was younger, taking on all the responsibility and worrying about the things that were out of my control. It led to some mental health problems that I’ve been lucky enough to live through and resolve. But without the journey I’ve been on I wouldn’t be where I am so I wouldn’t try and change too much.   Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?  After years of teasing my wife that I was likely to father twins, having had them in my family on my mother’s side, we actually had twins.  What three items would you take to a desert island?  My Swiss Army Knife, a fully loaded MP3 player and my solar-powered battery pack.   What’s the most important trend you see today?  Cloud services. With much focus on, and the obvious benefits of, the concept of a golden thread of building safety information, cloud services offer the perfect platform to digitally store and share critical information. They also enhance products and services to make them more functional and easier to manage.  If you didn’t work in the fire industry, what would you be doing?  I’d probably still be a struggling musician. I used to write and perform a lot when I started in fire safety but I came to a fork in the road and decided to put all the energy and effort that I expended on music into my day job. It seems to be paying off! I still love music but there are lots of incredible talents out there and mine was a tiny voice in an ocean of sound. I guess I figured I could help more people working in fire safety.   What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?  That’s a tough one. I guess it would probably relate back to music again. I had a publishing contract at 18 years old and I was on The Voice a few years back (I was in way over my head and whilst I was glad for the experience, it was a relief not to go through and sacrifice my *checks notes* artistic integrity. I did meet Kylie tho’).  What is one thing you would make compulsory in the office and one thing you would ban?  Compulsory: I think music should be compulsory in the workplace. It helps create an atmosphere and there’s plenty of research that indicates that it can improve productivity and morale.   Ban: Arguments about what music you should listen to at work. It took me a very long time to learn this but music is subjective and what I think is a bad song might not be the same for others.   Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  If I’ve done my job properly, I’ll still be at Fireco, continuing to help our customers to make compliance easy. It’s such a great company to work for and they’ve invested so much in me that I intend on doing the same. Steve Blanco as President and Chief Operating Officer of MSA

Global safety equipment manufacturer MSA Safety Incorporated announced that Steve Blanco has been elected President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) by the company’s Board of Directors.  Mr. Blanco, 56, previously served as President of the company’s Americas business segment, a position to which he was appointed in 2017.  As President and COO, Mr. Blanco will oversee the continued implementation of the company’s strategic initiatives across MSA’s global portfolio.  Nish Vartanian will continue to serve the company as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Steve’s election reflects the confidence that our Board of Directors and I have in his ability to lead the initiatives that will drive our future performance and enhance our productivity, processes and products on a global scale,” said Mr. Vartanian. Under Mr. Blanco’s leadership, from 2018 through 2022, revenue in the company’s Americas segment has grown by more than 40 percent.  During this period, Mr. Blanco helped oversee the company’s acquisitions of Globe Manufacturing, Sierra Monitor and Bacharach, Inc.  Most recently, he led the development and deployment of the MSA Business System – a combination of behaviors, processes and tools designed to drive continuous improvement and superior performance across the entire enterprise. “Steve has made numerous contributions to our success over the past decade and I very much look forward to working with him in this new role as we and our entire management team work to enhance MSA Safety’s position as the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of advanced safety solutions for workers,” Mr. Vartanian said. Mr. Vartanian noted that Mr. Blanco’s election is part of a longer-term effort to continue to develop the company’s senior leaders. Mr. Blanco joined MSA in 2012 as Vice President of Global Operational Excellence, a role in which he oversaw the company’s global manufacturing operations and led the implementation of best-in-class practices that helped advance MSA’s manufacturing efficiencies across the world. Prior to MSA Safety, Mr. Blanco worked for Eaton Corporation as Vice President of Manufacturing for the company’s $7 billion Electrical Sector.  Before that, he worked for Ford Motor Company and Visteon, serving in a variety of engineering, plant management and operations roles. Mr. Blanco earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering technology from Purdue University, and he holds an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. TLX Fire & Security tackles the challenge of weighing agents in fire suppression systems with their new Weight-Monitoring Systems   Determining the amount of agent in a fire suppression system’s cylinders usually involves either weighing the cylinders, which can require disconnecting them from the system, or determining the level of the agent in the cylinders and manually calculating the weight, using a conversion table. However, these methods cannot provide continuous monitoring. To address this issue, TLX Fire & Security has developed a range of continuous weight monitoring solutions.   Our Suspended Weight-Monitoring System and Platform Weight-Monitoring System monitor cylinder weight in real time and are accurate within 100 grams. If the weight falls below a designated threshold, an alarm can be sent directly to the fire control panel. Up to 20 weighing units can be connected in series and individually addressed to one central weight control panel, which can display individual cylinder weight and alarm condition.   The Suspended Weight-Monitoring System has a maximum load capacity of 230 kg per weighing unit, and the Platform Weight-Monitoring System has a maximum load capacity of 500 kg per weighing unit. It also features mechanical lockouts on the weighing platform to prevent load cell damage during cylinder loading.  Our Liquid Level Sensor automatically displays the thermally compensated weight of the extinguishing agent, without the errors that can be caused by manual measurements.   The Liquid Level Sensor is comprised of a sealed tube with a magnetic float mounted on the outside of the tube. This tube is installed in the cylinder before it is filled with extinguishing agent. There is another magnetic float inside the tube that interlocks with the float outside the tube. These rise and fall together as the fluid level in the cylinder changes, providing an accurate measurement of the fluid level inside the cylinder. A sensor at the end of the tube at the top of the cylinder sends float position and temperature data to a microcontroller that can be preprogrammed with a conversion table for that specific cylinder and extinguishing agent configuration. The microcontroller then determines the weight of the extinguishing agent.  There are a number of options available for displaying cylinder status. The weight can be displayed directly at the cylinder on a digital display or transmitted to the fire control panel via hardwired or wireless connection. Data can also be accessed remotely or downloaded using a USB connection. The not so new fire suppression

In this feature, Bettina McDowell discusses the evolution of today’s modern water mist systems, and offers a fascinating insight into the evolution and application of this fire suppression technology  Depending on how you look at it, water mist was rediscovered in the 1970s or the 1990s. In the 1970s, two Swedish scientists – Krister Giselsson and Mats Rosander – wrote a lecture book called “Fundamentals of Fire”. They wrote: “In future, a liquid, e.g. water, atomized to drops smaller than powder grains will be the most important extinguishing agent against flames indoors, so called fine mist.” At the time, not many people paid attention let alone took this statement seriously. That changed when the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer was adopted in the late 1980s. The result was that halon – a chemical used as a fire suppression agent – was banned and the gap that it left had to be filled and it was so by water mist. A tragic event took place in the early hours of 7th April 1990 when multiple fires – thought to be started by arsonists – broke out on board the passenger ship “Scandinavian Star” killing 159 people – nearly 50 per cent of the people on board. Suddenly, the conclusions that had emerged based on the work of the Swedish research team were of interest. The first two water mist companies were established – Ultra Fog (founded by Krister Giselsson in 1990) and Marioff (founded in 1991).   Only two years after the fires on the Scandinavian Star, in 1992, Ultra Fog’s first system was installed in the ro-pax ferries M/S Stena Danica, M/S Stena Germanica and M/S Stena Scandinavica. So, we see it all started with marine and offshore applications. In 1880, F.E. Myers may have conceived a water mist back-pack system to fight small forest fires, but this had no mentionable impact and today can be considered a mere piece of trivia.   For many years water mist systems have been installed in buildings on solid ground. When it comes to the different classes of fires, water mist ticks more boxes than any other kind of fire suppression system. This is due to the smaller droplets that interact with fires in a different way compared to the interaction between fires and the larger droplets coming from sprinkler systems. Water mist systems deal with heat and oxygen, whereas sprinkler systems only deal with heat. This is reflected in the list of applications that – over the years – has grown to considerable length.   One typical area is the health sector. Hospitals, health centre, care homes. Derek Killaspy, managing director of Fireworks Fire Protection and IWMA (International Water Mist Association) member, explains: “While fire sprinklers have been the traditionally chosen solution in the past, we saw the beginnings of the transition to water mist fire protection around a decade ago. Private clinics were amongst the first to benefit from the superior life-saving properties offered by water mist. Many large hospitals around the world are following suit, especially now that total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the system has become more competitive.“   One hospital which is equipped with a water mist system is the VUmc University Medical Centre in Amsterdam, one of the largest high-pressure water mist projects in the Netherlands. Provider of the system is the German company Fogtec (also an IWMA member). Rüdiger Kopp, Fogtec’s managing director fixed systems, says: “We believe that high-pressure water mist offers the best fire protection for the hospital environment. Two points in favour of this technology are the high cooling effect and the minimal water usage. The result is an easy evacuation in case of a fire and limited fire and water damage to the valuable equipment and the building”.   Particularly in retrofit situations to existing hospitals, the small pipe diameters and reduced water storage requirements render a flexible and space saving installation of the system possible.  In 2020, the installation process started. The system was selected as an integral part of the buildings’ engineering scheme to lift the hospital complex’ fire safety concept to the highest level. It was installed while the medical centre was in full operation, which means that installation works were carried out while patients were taken care of and doctors, nurses and students were on duty.   Special installation concepts had been developed by Fogtec to ensure as little interference as possible to the daily routine in the hospital. The use of flexible high-pressure stainless-steel hoses in conjunction with high-pressure press fittings reduces the site presence to a minimum and guarantees a quiet and clean system integration.  Once the installation will be finished, the Fogtec system will protect more than 43,000 square metres of nursing rooms, public spaces, escape routes, technical areas and car parks. It will – in case of a fire – provide safe evacuation conditions, protect valuable assets and assure operation continuity of the university hospital.  Two further, nowadays typical and common applications are the protection of archives and so called “green buildings”.   One famous archive which is protected with water mist is the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. Another example: the Hubei Provincial Archives. Skills for Security, and Fire Buyer partner, Darrel Gilmour speaks openly at the last Fire Buyer Live, about the skills shortage and challenges facing the fire industry and how apprenticeships can be a solution  I am Darrell Gilmore, the technical director here at Skills for Security, and I’ll be taking you through training and apprenticeships for the fire industry. Skills for Security are the largest fire and security apprenticeship provider in the UK now with over 500 plus live students enrolled on the programme, we have apprentices enrolled from Inverness in Scotland all the way down to Plymouth and everywhere else in between. As you can see from the map, over the last three years, we’ve been focused on improving the delivery and growing the business through high quality accessible training and with some great success might add. We’ve managed to grow the business over four times in the last three years and to voting centres in Warrington, Birmingham, Mansfield, Oxford and Glasgow with our newest flagship centre opened in Watford and planned expansion for delivery in the northeast on April this year, which is exciting. The two reasons for our growth that we believe have led to some of the success in the last three years is that our accessible model for delivery where we’re able to develop bespoke programmes to support employers and their requirements.  You may have noticed that we now offer some academy style delivery where some of our larger employers have got bespoke apprenticeship classes or cohorts that we have built there and kind of modulated the apprenticeship training to suit their business requirements. And secondly, all of our staff have over 15 plus years experience working in the sector. We’ve put ’em through continuous teaching and professional C P D to keep them up to scrap up to date with the latest teaching practises as well as what’s going on throughout the industry. And the benefit of all 10 of our delivery staff is that they’re all full-time employed. We don’t subcontract any of our teaching out and all of them that are in skill security have that same passion and drive to provide high quality standardised teaching to the whole of the industry. Just a bit of a fun bit of a fact in the background of this is in 2019 we only had one fire and security tutor. We now have 10.   What challenges do we face in the industry?  There’s obviously a number of challenges that you face as employers on a day-to-day basis, but also in the wider industry. And these challenges are typically related to training, development, and accessibility to local training providers, and of course the growing scale shortages where no one can seem to get the hands on any sort of staff. Now what we are facing is our skills crisis now rather than a skills shortage, recruitment and retention challenges across the board are causing headaches for companies like yourselves, plus young people just aren’t being attracted to this sector. We’re not choosing this sector as a career path of choice.   So why apprenticeships?  I’m sure I don’t need to tell you why apprenticeships are important for your business. There are tonnes of internal reasons why you would want to recruit apprenticeships, our apprentices for your businesses and workforces, making those individuals feel valued, developing your own workforce, succession planning and so on and so on. But there is a bigger reason why we push apprenticeships industry wide and it’s now becoming more important than ever. There’s a current skills shortage within the fire and security sector of around 30,000 shortfall of engineers. Now I am sure the user role can resonate with that for the fact that it’s almost like a premier league of buying and selling engineers at the moment. Ask the Expert – Ziamatic

Keith Creely, VP of Ziamatic, Corp., analyses how Ziamatic are rising to the challenges of electrical vehicle battery fire, as well as some of their industry standard tool mounts and rescue tools  The road is changing and so are the vehicles on it. How has Ziamatic risen to the challenge of EV  fires?   Electric vehicles (EV) are quickly growing in popularity. The popularity is growing so fast that many fire departments have asked if we have any products specifically designed to help with EV issues and concerns.   It has now been over a year since the start of our research and development project for EV cooling products. We now have a final product designed and it is debuting at shows this year! Engineering had a big job ahead of them, and with the help of local fire departments, Ziamatic was able to quickly bring to market one of the best products available to help with cooling EV battery areas.   One of our biggest concerns that we have focused on is cost. Most fire departments do not have big budgets to run out and buy thousands of dollars of new equipment. We are excited to promote a product that is cost efficient, user friendly, and effective in its use of cooling areas of these vehicles.   How is this vehicle cooling unit applied in the field by firefighters?  We believe, to understand how or why our product would be a good option to apply in the field, one might need to understand some of the basics of what the departments are up against. It is said that copious amounts of water should be applied to an area of an EV battery pan if high temperatures are present. This requires a firefighter to apply water to that area while the car is lifted slightly for accessibility.   What if there is not an endless supply of water? Do fire fighters really want to be that close to the vehicle? Our Vehicle Cooling Unit (VCU) frees up a firefighter to accomplish other tasks. Once set in place, our new cooling unit can be left alone to continue cooling on its own.   Our Vehicle Cooling Unit is designed to reach the complete battery area if centered under the vehicle with a minimum reach of four by eight feet with a vehicle at a 5.5” ground clearance. One can adjust the flow by idling the pump down or up. Compared to the 80-100 gallons per minute (GPM) seen through nozzles with maximum water pressure, our product can flow as low as 40 GPM and still be effective. This decreases water consumption by half or more and creates a safer option for the firefighters.  EV vehicle popularity is growing substantially, which poses challenges for fire departments around the world, do you think we will see electric firefighting vehicles?  From my understanding, in the US we have at least one electric firefighting vehicle in service already. There appears to be a growing in interest in them. But it doesn’t make a difference as far as we can tell with our products.   As far as potential issues with electric vehicles, one of the challenges firefighters will see is identifying a battery area that is heating up. Another challenge is figuring out how to cool the battery area down efficiently. Ziamatic believes there is much more to learn about EV vehicles and thermal issues with them. We believe our VCU is a great tool to assist in cooling areas of electric vehicles when needed.   According to some firefighters that have evaluated our units, it was said our VCU can be a more cost-effective approach to cooling compromised areas of vehicles when comparing them to the competition. With a flow rate of 40 GPM at 65 PSI, our units may be the most efficient option available when it comes to water consumption too.   It has been said that there could be many other uses for these cooling units. For example, the velocity and free flowing pattern seems to be very effective as an under carriage vehicle cleaner. The Ziamatic VCU can be used as a water curtain by attaching as many as five 36” units together with very little decline in flow patter and pressure. With an unrestricted pattern of 20 feet high and 50 feet wide, one might use them in a basement and other similar areas.  Ziamatic are also incredibly well known for their Sure-Grip Tool Mounts. What inspired the name ‘Sure-Grip’, and how has this innovation catered for the evolving needs of fire responders?   For years Ziamatic has been considered the leading equipment mounting manufacturer for the emergency response industry. Known for strong, user friendly, cost effective, mounting brackets, Ziamatic has sometimes found it challenging to create better options.   With the help and feedback from many firefighters we have designed a completely new tool and equipment mounting product line. Starting with a smaller bracket design, used to retain anything that has a .75 – 2-inch diameter, we tested the market and it was a success right away.
