Coopers Fire Concertina Fire Curtains

In November 2020, main contractor, Morrison, a Galliford Try Company, took on a major new education campus project, Wallyford Learning Campus. During the early stages, JMA Architects, recognised the need for advanced fire safety solutions to enclose the open void on the top floor. JM Architects reached out to Coopers Fire, a leading provider of fire safety solutions, for a solution. Coopers Fire, with their expertise in smoke and fire curtains, proposed a cutting-edge solution for the project. They suggested the installation of their FireMaster Open Concertina Fire Curtain, to enclose the void and surround the staircase on level 2, providing minimum 30 minutes integrity (E) and  ensuring both fire safety compliance and architectural integrity.  Why were fire curtains used?  In line with the fire safety requirements of Wallyford Learning Campus, Morrison and JM Architects recognised the importance of implementing reliable measures to contain fire. The open void on the top floor posed a significant threat, potentially allowing fire to spread rapidly to other levels. Coopers Fire, FireMaster Open Concertina, was identified as the ideal solution. This large 3 sided open concertina curtain (each side spanning at least 7m width) provides fire protection of 180min Integrity (E) and 30 min Radiation (EW), without the requirement for any corner posts or beams. The fire alarm activated deployment of the FireMaster Concertina creates a dependable barrier, sealing off the void in the event of a fire. This effectively prevents the passage of fire thereby safeguarding the school’s occupants and enabling secure evacuation. In addition, to ensure the curtains drop path remains obstruction free, multiple vertical obstruction warning monitors were installed around the perimeter of the curtain to make sure it is kept clear from obstruction. If the detection zone is obstructed, a warning device is activated after 5 minutes. This time period can be adjusted if required. Automated Deployment: Coopers Fire’s smoke and fire curtains are linked to existing fire alarm systems, instantly activating when a fire is detected. Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection at Adipec 2023

Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection will not only use ADIPEC 2023 to demonstrate how its latest innovations successfully protect both people and capital assets in the oil and gas sector, but also to illustrate the company’s proactive decarbonisation drive in support of wider industry sustainability efforts. Another important theme will be the detection of fires started by alternative fuels such as hydrogen (H2 ). Teledyne GFD’s new Spyglass IR3-H2-V quickly detects hydrogen and other ‘energy transition’ fires, supporting rapid response efforts. A near-infrared camera provides personnel with the ability to see invisible H2 flames in all weather and light conditions. Furthermore, the detector automatically records video, providing additional means to study the cause and development of fires. From a gas detection perspective, Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection has highly effective solutions for ammonia (NH3 ), such as the proven 700 series fixed gas detector with its multi-layer surge protection and pre-emptive fault diagnostics. Those interested in carbon dioxide (CO2 ) applications will also find the optimal solution, this time with Teledyne GFD’s GD10P fixed gas detector, which uses state-of-the-art IR gas measurement to provide a fast, reliable and accurate response. Another showcase on the booth will be the GD1 laser-based fixed gas detector with full SIL2 third-party approval. This ground-breaking development means that the GD1 SIL2 is the market’s first open-path gas detector for hydrogen sulphide (H2S) safety-related applications. Notably, the GD1 features a unique ‘tunable’ laser diode that eliminates the environmental effects of sun, rain and fog to boost overall site safety. Portable solutions on display will include an enhanced version of the company’s popular Gasurveyor 700 1/2 (GS700), known as the GS700-Hydrogen, which now features the additional capability of detecting H2 in applications that include leak detection and pipeline gas testing. Teledyne GFD’s portable PS200 multi-gas compliance monitor will also take the spotlight. Compact, lightweight, water resistant and extremely robust, the user-friendly PS200 is a proven performer in hazardous locations with its ability to measure any combination of LEL, O₂, CO and H₂S. Among the controllers on display will be the modular and flexible Teledyne GFD MX62TP, which features a large, fully interactive 10″ (up to 15″) high-definition colour touchscreen, 64 secure channels and a back-up processor to ensure continual measurement. Munro unveils all-electric MK_1 Truck at ESS

Munro Vehicles (Munro), a manufacturer of all-electric 4x4s, and Scotland’s only volume production car company has revealed a Mountain Rescue special edition of its MK_1 electric truck. The ultra-capable 4X4 is the first MK_1 special edition tailored to the requirements of Mountain Rescue and Fire Services who need a rugged, all-terrain vehicle capable of reaching casualties and wildfires in remote and challenging terrain. The release of the vehicle follows extensive consultation and discussions with Scottish, English and Welsh mountain rescue teams and discovery sessions with several reginal Fire Services. The key attributes include roof-mounted blue lights and the space to carry a stretcher safely within the protection of the vehicles, along with three passengers and all their kit. The Mountain Rescue Edition follows swiftly in the wheel tracks of the Munro MK_1 Pick-Up launched in May. The Mountain Rescue Edition underlines the adaptability the MK_1 offers both commercial and private customers and signifies Munro’s strategic mission to fulfil significant global market demand for zero-emission off-road vehicles. Both the Munro MK_1 Truck and the MK_1 Pick-Up’s unique abilities enable customers operating in challenging sectors such as mining, construction, utilities, agriculture, and defence to meet imminent decarbonisation targets without compromising on performance. Munro CEO and Co-Founder Russell Peterson said; “We are thrilled to be able to showcase the Mountain Rescue edition of our MK_1 electric truck. We have consulted with multiple Mountain Rescue Teams to best understand their unique demands for an all-terrain stretcher bearing vehicle capable of crossing the toughest of terrain. The spacious, easy-to-load rear bed of the Munro MK_1 Truck accommodates a 1050kg Euro Pallet payload, while the Performance model has a 3,500kg maximum braked towing capacity for effortless haulage of any cargo from specialist technical rescue tools to water bowsers and disaster relief equipment. Producing a prodigious peak power output of 375 / 280kw combined with instantly available 700Mn / 516ft-lb of torque, the Munro MK_1 dispenses the sprint to 60mph in a mere 4.9 seconds. A 220KW electric motor and a choice of Utility and Range variants are also offered. Replenishing the 82.4kWh battery from 15 to 80% can be swiftly undertaken using a 100kW DC charger in just 36 minutes. With a fully charged battery, the MK_1 has a range of more than 190 miles, enabling it to operate off-road for up to 16 hours on a single battery charge. Designed, engineered, and built in Britain, the Munro is the first light vehicle to enter production in Scotland in more than four decades. Big Interview: Clive Miles

Fire Buyer speaks with Clive Miles, the newly appointed Chair of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) and Founder and CEO of CLM Fireproofing  Could you introduce yourself and what you do?  I am Clive Miles, Founder and Director of CLM Fireproofing Systems Limited. I founded CLM in 1989 and have been working in the passive fire protection industry for 38 years. CLM offers passive fire protection services and has worked on challenging and complex landmark projects, including the refurbishment of the Royal Opera House and the Shard. This experience cemented CLM as a recognised tall buildings specialist. I was elected as Vice Chair of the Association Fire for Specialist Fire Protection two years ago and was recently appointed as Chair for a further two-year term.   You have recently been appointed the new Chair for the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP), what changes do you intend to bring to the organisation?  As an Association I believe we need to focus on three key areas over the next two years to address the significant change which is coming and maximise the opportunity. These are technology; the skills shortage; and knowledge sharing.  What changes in technology do you feel will influence passive fire protection in the future and why?  Both legislative demands and digital advancements are driving innovation in the construction sector, but also specifically within passive fire protection. The rise of BIM, the increased reliance on digital recording and even Virtual Reality are changing the way we interact with clients, products, environments, and end users.   Recruitment and upskilling is a complex theme currently, how do you think ASFP could attract new entrants to the industry?  Attracting new entrants to the passive fire protection industry is a key aim of the ASFP. The construction industry as a whole is suffering both from an ageing workforce and a skills shortage, with YouGov research showing that only 3% of people between 18-24 searched for a job in construction.   The ASFP aims to attract and retain young fire protection professionals, we plan to inspire and secure the next generation of our profession through a combination of apprenticeships, academies, and outreach programmes.   We are also offering students with an interest in passive fire protection free membership of the Association, with free access to our Online Introduction to Passive Fire Protection training course and to our technical documents and webinars.    What are the likely future training requirements for the passive sector?  Both legislative demands and digital advancements are driving innovation in the construction sector, but also specifically within passive fire protection. The rise of BIM, the increased reliance on digital recording and even Virtual Reality are changing the way we interact with clients, products, environments, and end users. This means our industry, the ASFP and our members must evolve in new and innovative ways to adapt to this new, ever-changing world.   Our sector is particularly affected by this change, with the Building Safety Act, giving rise to the Golden Thread meaning a greater reliance on technology and greater emphasis on demonstrating competency. There is increased demand for competent and qualified fire safety professionals. Rebecca Spayne, Managing Editor, Fire Buyer, speaks with Adrian Wußler, Product Manager, MEIKO Protect, about decontaminating PPE  Could you offer insights into the history and heritage of MEIKO?  MEIKO has been at the forefront of devising innovative solutions for the cleaning and disinfection of PPE in respiratory protection workshops. Under the banner of MEIKO Protect, the company provides an all-encompassing service: consultation, design, technology, installation, training, and after-sales service. From designing a respiratory protection workshop to offering guidance on chemicals and validation, as well as training at their in-house academy, fire brigades find in MEIKO a proficient ally. The company’s expertise, rooted in its German heritage of almost a century in pioneering hygiene technology for warewashing and cleaning, is invaluable. MEIKO, with its longstanding history, consistently emphasises ergonomics, occupational safety, efficiency, and sustainability in its solutions. Respirator wearers and equipment caretakers have reaped the benefits of this vast experience for over a decade.  How does MEIKO’s BA mask cleaning system cater specifically to the needs of the fire service industry?  For approximately 15 years, we’ve collaborated closely with fire brigades. Our initial TopClean M cleaning device and its complementary rack were conceived in partnership with respiratory protection equipment technicians. Since then, we’ve maintained consistent dialogue with the fire service sector and the broader market. We vigilantly monitor the evolution of regulations, manufacturer certifications, and escalating hygiene standards. For our MEIKO Protect team, the health and safety of those using respiratory protection equipment are of utmost importance. It’s essential that our systems provide absolute security for its users. Alongside safety, we also prioritise time-efficiency.  Given that firefighter PPE might come into contact with various contaminants, including carcinogens, could you elucidate on the technology or features your system employs to ensure maximum carcinogen removal from PPE?  Firstly, it’s important to highlight our reverse rinsing system. With our TopClean D pre-cleaning unit, we ensure optimal removal of dirt particles from the equipment. Secondly, the positioning of the equipment within our racks is meticulously planned and executed. This guarantees that each item — whether a mask, breathing apparatus, or compressed air cylinder — receives the precise quantity of water and chemicals required for thorough processing. There are absolutely no spray shadows. Thirdly, we maintain specific temperatures for designated durations to assure hygiene.  In specific terms, our TopClean M washer-disinfector sustains a set temperature for at least five minutes. This ensures that bacteria are effectively eliminated and viruses are neutralised. An autonomous hygiene specialist has scrutinised our enclosed-process system and validated it with a hygiene certificate. Users can independently verify the efficacy of the cleaning and disinfection process. In association with a laboratory, we’ve introduced the Simicon test for this exact purpose. Equipment caretakers can use the device as per usual, attach test strips beforehand, initiate the cleaning process, and later send the strips to the lab for analysis. Results are received within days, allowing corrective action if necessary. Moreover, whenever new PPE enters the market, we conduct validity and hygiene tests alongside chemical and PPE manufacturers. Our collaboration ensures all aspects are meticulously coordinated to minimise the risk of exposure to carcinogenic substances for those using respirators.  You’ve mentioned measures for respirator attendants; could you provide some examples?  If the test outcome post-cleaning isn’t up to par, respirator attendants ought to first review their procedures, asking questions like: Have I ensured all steps were taken for hygienic cleaning? Did I don gloves when setting up the equipment? Afterward, did I use a fresh pair of gloves to handle the PPE? Could the surface where I placed the equipment have been tainted? Is the cleaning unit functioning correctly? Are all chemical and water supply lines intact? When was the machine last maintained?  With the heightened emphasis on firefighter health and the risks associated with dirty equipment, how does MEIKO’s solution support brigades in keeping their PPE at the highest standard of cleanliness?  As a comprehensive solution provider, we stand by fire brigades from start to finish. They benefit from our extensive expertise in crafting respiratory protection workshops. We initiate by listening, grasping the fire brigade’s requirements and processes, then transition to the planning phase, during which we enhance the respiratory protection workshop, often building it anew. Space constraints frequently mean there’s no clear demarcation between clean and dirty zones, which we address. Increasingly, our solution is the hood type unit, TopClean H. ZF networks with Rescue Connect

More than 260 vehicles of the Berlin Fire Department will be equipped with the digital fleet management system ZF Rescue Connect by the end of September. Recently, ZF was awarded the contract in the public tender for one of the largest fire departments in Europe. ZF Rescue Connect digitally networks the Berlin Fire Department with the vehicles and provides all important telemetry and status information of the deployed vehicles in real time. As part of the digitization of its vehicle fleet, the Berlin Fire Department is equipping 263 vehicles with ZF transmitters and receivers for the transmission of telemetry and location data. 210 ambulances and 50 emergency vehicles will be equipped with the ZF OBD Unit (on-board diagnostics), and another three fire trucks will receive the more powerful ZF VCU Pro on a test basis. The retrofitting of the vehicles is to be completed by the end of September. “The fact that we were able to convince one of Europe’s largest fire departments of the performance capability of our ZF Rescue Connect digital fleet management system is a great success for us,” said Alexander Grupp, Venture Lead Rescue Connect at ZF. “With ZF Rescue Connect, we offer the first comprehensive, manufacturer-independent connectivity solution for emergency services in Europe. ZF provides a scalable digital solution based on our pan-European cloud for the Internet of Things. This is what makes this service so valuable and at the same time affordable for widespread use.” “For the digitalization of the Berlin Fire Department, the development of our analog rescue and firefighting vehicles into a networked fleet is another important milestone for the continuous improvement of the safety of the city of Berlin,” said Maximilian Krause, Project Manager Fleet Management at the Berlin Fire Department. Euralarm starts Task Group Environment & Sustainability

The Horizontal Compliance Committee of Euralarm has started a new Task Group focusing on environmental and sustainability issues. The kick-off meeting of the new Task Group took place on August 23rd. Task Group Environment & Sustainability Earlier this year the Horizontal Compliance Committee acknowledged that the number of European legislative initiatives related to environment and sustainability under the European Green Deal was continuously growing and that the experts from the Euralarm members on such topics are often different from those involved in usual electrotechnical topics. The Committee concluded that it was time to initiate a Task Group entitled to address these specific topics, provided that enough experts are interested to participate. This resulted in the kick-off meeting on August 23rd, attended by 17 experts from 14 organisations representing all Euralarm sections and moderated by the Horizontal Compliance Committee chair Christian Schmitz (Honeywell). The overall objective of the new Task Group is to address the relevant legislations covering environmental sustainability topics where either Euralarm can influence or where there will be a significant impact for the members. Wide variety of topics to be addressed The Task Group will address the topics as requested by Horizontal Compliance Committee. Possible examples are the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), sustainability requirements that are relevant for the revision of the CPR, the Digital Product Passport (DPP), Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), Green Claims Directive, Right to Repair Directive, potential PFAS restrictions, RoHS, REACH and WEEE. To avoid duplication and to maximize results the Task Group will liaise with the Orgalim Green Transition Working Group. The deliverables of the Task Group can be explanatory memos summarising legislations, standards, or other technical specifications with an assessment on how these can impact Euralarm members. Other deliverables could be Euralarm responses to consultations and Euralarm position papers, guidance documents and webinars.
