Cygnus introduces the SmartNet-100

The Cygnus SmartNet-100 system is designed for small to medium-sized projects and can support up to 100 devices connected to a single control panel. Drawing from their previous SmartNet-Pro system, the SmartNet-100 fills the requirement for setups with fewer devices. The system differs from the SmartNet-Pro in its capacity to handle up to 100 devices linked to a single panel. According to Austen Wells, Sales Manager at Cygnus, “Small to medium-sized projects often cannot afford the downtime, the disruption, or the expense of fitting a wired fire detection and alarm system. SmartNet-100 provides a fast and cost-effective solution.” The system aims to detect threats such as smoke or fire while trying to reduce false alarms. It doesn’t require wired components like boosters or translators, which can potentially streamline the installation process. The network uses battery-powered radio devices connected through a self-healing mesh network, based on the Cygnus protocol. The system functions across 10 frequency channels ranging from 865-868 MHz. The control panel is powered by the mains. The SmartNet-100 system is intended to reduce the need for extensive cabling, which might save on engineering time and project expenses. The product range includes Radio Bases with optional Sounders, Visual Indicator Detectors, and various detector heads. Te Pūkenga and Fire and Emergency NZ collaborate

Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology is collaborating with Fire and Emergency New Zealand as part of an effort to enhance quality assurance and professional development within its assessment regime. Most Kiwis know Fire and Emergency as the essential service they call for help, but it also acts as a major training provider to ensure personnel have the skills they need to carry out often demanding roles. Fire and Emergency delivers two New Zealand Qualifications Authority-accredited programmes and three hundred separate unit standards to its personnel. “Quality assurance and continuous improvement are the cornerstones of maintaining the highest standards,” said Te Pūkenga Pourangi Mātauranga me ngā Pūnaha Ako | Deputy Chief Executive – Academic Centre and Learning Systems, Dr Megan Gibbons. Under the terms of an agreement signed with the organisation, Te Pūkenga will provide post-moderation services from this month until July 2024. The agreement covers more than 9000 results recorded for around a thousand ākonga (learners) in a range of courses delivered to volunteer and career kaitinei ahi (firefighters), as well as communication centre workers. “The resources and expertise within the national network allow Te Pūkenga to provide these services to Fire and Emergency, a significant nationwide organisation carrying out a critical role with very specialised needs,” added Dr Gibbons. Deputy Chief Executive People, Janine Hearn, said this partnership is another important step in the mahi underway to improve the systems and processes the organisation has in place to monitor the quality of training programmes provided. “We remain confident that the training our personnel receive continues to be a high standard. The support from Te Pūkenga will help us improve our assessment and moderation so we can offer our people, and all New Zealanders, the same certainty.” Careerforce | Te Pūkenga will lead the delivery of the contract. The business division has considerable experience across all aspects of quality assurance, moderation processes and their use to support professional development. From 2017 -2020, Careerforce, on behalf of Ministry of Health, assessed equivalencies of learning outcomes for New Zealand Certificate in Health & Wellbeing Level 2 and 4 with international qualifications held by kaimahi working in our healthcare sector. KASK helmet series for wildfire firefighting

KASK, a distinguished designer and producer of high-performance head protection gear, has introduced the Quantum series as its inaugural line of helmets for wildfire firefighting and technical rescue operations. These helmets are designed for first responders engaged in high-risk tasks that require extended usage. KASK has set a new benchmark for rescue and wildland firefighting helmets by crafting a solution inspired by the evolution of rescue and climbing headgear, advancements in materials technology, and the ever-evolving challenges of technical rescue, natural disaster response, and wildland firefighting. This led to the incorporation of not only a more performance-oriented, application-based design but also a more effective response to the high-risk nature of emergency situations. Quantum leverages KASK’s proven expertise in high-performance head protection, drawn from their cycling, snow sports, equestrian, and industrial safety divisions. Safety is guaranteed thanks to the external shell made from a polycarbonate/polybutylene terephthalate (PC/PBT) alloy blend, which offers higher impact resistance across various temperatures, increased heat and flame resistance, and greater chemical resistance. The expanded polystyrene inner foam shell ensures comprehensive impact energy absorption and enhanced comfort. Thermoformed polystyrene covers the EPS, providing increased durability and ease of cleaning and decontamination. Outstanding wearer comfort is delivered through a multi-layered fabric inner padding with moisture-wicking technology and exceptionally soft textiles that enhance overall comfort. It can be effortlessly removed or replaced using the patented Click-In system. Furthermore, the patented Adaptive Fit system adapts to individual head shapes, creating a personalised, secure fit. Adjusting the large diameter dial enables the ergonomic side wings to cradle the nape of the neck, while the self-adjusting hinge moves up and down to maintain a comfortable and secure position that moves with the wearer. The fire-resistant acrylic chinstrap offers five points of adjustment on the sides and rear. Quantum is available in a closed-shell or Cabrio configuration, featuring 14 vents for improved airflow and wearer comfort. It includes anti-intrusion metal mesh vent covers to prevent debris from entering the ventilation channels. Quantum Cabrio also comes equipped with a sliding closure system. Like all KASK helmets, Quantum incorporates several additional design elements that enhance the wearer’s experience. Streamlight introduces the Stylus Pro Haz-Lo flashlight

Streamlight, a provider of high-performance lighting, have launched the new Stylus Pro® HAZ-LO®, an intrinsically safe and extremely durable alkaline battery-powered light. This is the newest addition to the Stylus® line of slim, everyday carry penlights. “With its Class 1, Division 1 rating, the Stylus Pro HAZ-LO is ideal for professionals working in the aerospace and food service industries or hazardous environments such as chemical plants or utilities,” said Michael F. Powered by two AAA alkaline batteries, it is exceptionally bright for a light of its size. It uses a high-power white LED to deliver 105 lumens, 380 candela over a beam distance of 39 metres and a run time of 2.25 hours. The Stylus Pro HAZ-LO includes a removable metal clip that aids in Foreign Object Debris (FOD) reduction and is easily replaceable if needed. The Stylus Pro HAZ-LO measures 15.04cm in length and its slim body diameter ranges in size from 1.6cm to 2cm. It weighs just 53.9g with two included AAA batteries. It features an unbreakable polycarbonate lens, and it is made of impact and chemical-resistant engineered polymer resin, which is non-conductive, sealed, and vented. Available in high-visibility yellow, the Stylus Pro HAZ-LO is IPX7-rated for waterproof operation to 1 metre for 30 minutes, and it is 2-metre impact resistance tested. DFW Airport Upgrades with Six Striker Volterras

Oshkosh Airport Products, a division of Pierce Manufacturing Inc., a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation , announces Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has issued a purchase order for six Striker® Volterra™ 6×6 Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) hybrid electric vehicles. Sold through Siddons-Martin Emergency Group, this purchase amplifies the airport’s eco-friendly initiatives currently underway and allows the DFW Airport Fire Department to upgrade its full Oshkosh Airport Products fleet. Currently operating (eight) Striker 8x8s, the DFW Airport Fire Department is now transitioning to an optimized fleet of (six) Striker Volterra 6x6s complemented by (two) Striker 6X6s each with a Snozzle® High Reach Extendable Turret (HRET), and (two) Striker 4×4 rapid intervention trucks. A key motive behind this significant fleet revamp is the new foam standards, combined with the FAA’s fluorine-free aircraft firefighting foam transition plan. The airport’s forward-thinking decision ensures consistent fleet capability, mitigating the complexities of operating vehicles with differing foam types. Daniel White, Chief of the DFW Airport Fire Department, explained, “Our choice to transition to the new Striker Volterra ARFF hinges on performance. These vehicles are faster, more agile, and quieter as compared to our current fleet, benefiting from both carbon and diesel savings. While our commitment to supporting the goal of net-zero emissions remains robust, functionality and safety of our personnel remain paramount.” The Striker Volterra 6×6 comes equipped with an Oshkosh-patented hybrid-electric drivetrain, featuring an electro-mechanical infinitely variable transmission. This enables zero-emissions operation through the integrated onboard batteries and uninterrupted power supply by coupling with the internal combustion engine for pumping and drive systems. DFW Airport Fire Department’s new Striker Volterra ARFF vehicles will feature: Acceleration from 0 – 50 mph (0 to 80 kph) in under 25 seconds – a 28 percent improved acceleration compared to standard diesel Striker models when fully loaded TAK-4® all-wheel independent suspension High-pressure fire extinguishing reel, tailored for challenging aircraft zones such as galleys or cargo holds – developed by EJ Metals in conjunction with Oshkosh Airport Products, this advanced system provides precise and efficient fire suppression 3,000-gallon (11,356-liter) water tank 420-gallon (1,590-liter) foam tank 2,000 gpm (7,570 lpm) water pump 500 lb. (250 kg) dry chemical powder system Addressing potential challenges with charging infrastructure, Chief White said, “Our ARFF stations will soon undergo modernization. While the Striker Volterra ARFF vehicles come with onboard chargers, we’re ensuring sufficient power delivery.
