NASA Conduct Fire Safety Experiments Aboard ISS

Crew members from Expedition 73 aboard the International Space Station (ISS) conducted a full day of science and maintenance activities earlier this week, NASA have confirmed, with key focuses on fire behaviour in microgravity and DNA-inspired nanomaterials. NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers led experiments using the Life Sciences Glovebox as part of the DNA Nano Therapeutics Mission 2. The study explores how DNA-like nanomaterials might be utilised for delivering therapeutic agents in space environments. As part of their protocol, the astronauts mixed messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein solutions to investigate in-space production techniques. The goal is to identify low-cost, in-orbit manufacturing methods that could be adapted for future missions. According to NASA, these materials may also support drug delivery systems with reduced side effects for patients. Ayers also used a spectrophotometer to measure light wavelengths, further supporting the characterisation of these nanomaterials. She later conducted routine maintenance on the Astrobees, a set of free-flying robotic assistants that perform tasks to increase crew efficiency and facilitate remote operations from Earth. Elsewhere on the station, astronaut Jonny Kim continued NASA’s investigations into fire dynamics under microgravity conditions. Working in the station’s combustion research area, Kim installed mist suppression hardware for the Solid Fuel Ignition and Extinction (SoFIE) experiment. This research is designed to enhance understanding of flame extinguishment mechanisms in space – a critical consideration for the design of future crew safety systems. Kim also operated the Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR), which allows controlled study of flame initiation and propagation without the influence of gravity. These experiments form part of NASA’s wider programme to refine fire response protocols for current and future missions, including long-duration flights and potential lunar or Martian habitats. JAXA Station Commander Takuya Onishi performed parallel fire-related investigations in the Japanese Experiment Module. He managed the Solid Combustion Experiment Module (SCEM), conducting gas bottle exchanges and leak checks via the Multi-Purpose Small Payload Rack. Onishi also completed plumbing upgrades, installing recycled water tanks and configuring drainage systems, which are crucial for maintaining onboard environmental systems over extended missions. Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov, Alexey Zubritskiy, and Kirill Peskov carried out a range of technical checks and hardware maintenance across the Russian sector of the ISS. Tasks included thermal sensor replacements, supply unloading, and ventilation system inspections. Peskov conducted a network audit of ethernet cabling and performed adjustments to the intermodular ventilation system connecting the US and Russian segments – vital for maintaining airflow and atmospheric consistency throughout the station. The latest activity aboard the ISS demonstrates the ongoing intersection of scientific inquiry and operational readiness in space. From exploring novel drug delivery systems using DNA-like materials to advancing the understanding of fire behaviour in zero gravity, these efforts underpin the safe operation of crewed space missions. The multidisciplinary work by astronauts and cosmonauts continues to inform the design of next-generation life support systems, emergency protocols, and scientific instrumentation aboard both current and future space habitats. Services Take Place in Honour of Bicester Fire Victims

Church services have been held in Oxfordshire to honour the lives of two firefighters and a local businessman who died in a large-scale fire at Bicester Motion, a site known for its cluster of classic car engineering businesses. Firefighters Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, lost their lives while responding to the incident on Thursday evening. Also among the deceased was David Chester, 57, a father of two and owner of a business operating within the complex, who resided in nearby Bicester. Memorial prayers were offered on Sunday at St Mary’s Church in Launton and St Laurence’s Church in Caversfield, with a book of condolence made available at St Edburg’s Church. Local residents and community members have paid tribute by laying flowers and messages at Garth Park, located close to the fire site. Thames Valley Police confirmed on Saturday that two other firefighters who sustained serious injuries in the blaze are “conscious and remain in a stable condition” in hospital. In a show of solidarity, firefighters formed a guard of honour as two fire engines returned to Bicester Fire Station on Saturday. Meanwhile, fundraising efforts have been launched in support of the Firefighters Charity. One page, organised by the local rugby club, described Mr Sadler as “a true clubman and rugby man” and Ms Logan as “a kind, gentle and thoughtful force to be reckoned with.” Another fundraiser, set up by local resident Daniel Chartrand, has surpassed £1,000 towards its £4,500 goal. The Bicester Motion site, which housed more than 50 specialist businesses involved in classic car restoration and engineering, was originally part of RAF Bomber Command during World War Two and was decommissioned in 2004. Bicester Town Council has lowered flags at Garth House to half-mast in tribute to those who died. The G3’s eye-level capture provides face-on footage of each activation, overcoming common obstructions like hoods or caps. Footage is captured before, during and after activation, in turn providing crucial evidence for facilities managers and security team personnel. Particularly in high-traffic environments where repeated false activations are a costly problem, this added layer of visual accountability helps to deter misuse and supports more informed incident management. Constructed from impact-resistant polycarbonate, the devices are highly durable and built for reliability in demanding settings. The G3 Series is intended for general use in access control and security systems, while the GF Series is purpose-built for fire alarm integration. Both feature a range of operational configurations, including Momentary, Key-to-Reset and Turn-to-Reset, with optional protective covers available with or without a built-in sounder. These covers offer added protection and are aligned with the recommendations of BS 5839-1:2017, which advocates for the use of protective covers to reduce false fire alarms. The G3 is also available in a choice of colours and with customisable text options, allowing it to be tailored to different applications or site protocols. The GF model has been UL-listed, ensuring compliance with stringent global fire safety standards. This certification has proven to be important in the Middle East market, where adherence to UL requirements is the standard. The product has already been met with enthusiasm by fire and security professionals in the region, with Intersec 2025 attendees praising the device’s ability to strengthen fire alarm systems and reduce Call Point misuse. The G3 and GF push buttons each offer a high-performance contact switch – DPDT (2 Form C) in the G3, SPDT (Form C) in the GF – rated at 30 VAC/VDC and 5 A. The optional IP camera offers a 180-degree diagonal field of view and supports up to 5 MP HD resolution at 30 frames per second, powered via 12 V DC. False fire alarms continue to be a major concern in the industry. In the UK alone, they account for the largest share of Fire and Rescue Service call-outs, causing disruption to (among others) public spaces, educational institutions and healthcare facilities. Frequent false alarms contribute to a growing issue of alarm fatigue, whereby building occupants become desensitised to alerts and fail to respond promptly in the event of a real emergency. STI’s new push buttons directly address this issue, supporting global efforts to reduce alarm fatigue, increase compliance and restore occupant confidence in emergency alert systems. The launch of the G3 and GF Push Button Series is particularly timely as organisations across the UK prepare to meet the requirements of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, also known as Martyn’s Law. While the legislation is currently within its implementation period, it will ultimately require public venues to improve protective security and readiness in the event of a terrorist incident. Australasia’s largest fire protection industry event, Fire Australia, took place this week at Sydney’s ICC, drawing over 2000 delegates. MC Brett de Hoedt opened the event, followed by a welcome from FPA Australia President Russell Porteous and opening remarks from FPA Australia’s CEO John Collie. The program kicked off with three expert-led plenary sessions: the first on the NFPA‘s Fire and Life Safety Ecosystem, the second on innovation, knowledge, and collaboration, and the third on the Grenfell Inquiry’s impact on fire service operations and emerging safety challenges. The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has announced a special partnership with mental health charity Mates in Mind, dedicated to building a healthier, more resilient fire safety community. Launching during men (12–18 May 2025), this initiative celebrates the theme of ‘Community’ by empowering FIA members with tools, training, and support to address mental health proactively. Mates in Mind supports organisations in making a vital move to challenge the silence and stigma often linked to mental health. By working with Mates in Mind, we’re joining a growing network of organisations actively taking steps to enhance mental health across their workforces. “We’re thrilled to be working alongside the FIA,” said Sam Downie, Managing Director at Mates in Mind. “By bringing our tailored support and guidance to such a vital sector, we’re helping to ensure that mental wellbeing is embedded in every layer of workplace culture.” Stress, depression, and anxiety accounted for 46% of work-related ill health cases and 55% of all working days lost in 2023/24 according to HSE, a stark reminder of the urgent need for action. UK Fire Statistics Reveal High Efficacy of Water Mist Systems

Water mist systems have controlled fires in 95.3% of cases and extinguished them in 58.6% – compared to 90.7% and 27.6%, respectively, for sprinklers – according to new data analysing over 4,000 fire incidents in England between 2018 and 2024. The date from from the UK Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government shows that in residential settings, both systems performed strongly, with near-identical extinguishment rates (around 37 per cent) and control rates of 95.8% for mist and 91.4% for sprinklers.  While extinguishment is not the primary design goal of most suppression systems — mist or sprinklers — these figures offer useful insights into their real effectiveness. “This confirms what professionals already know – well-designed suppression systems save lives,” said Max Lakkonen, President of the International Water Mist Association (IWMA).  “Water mist’s edge in performance, combined with its low water usage, makes it a powerful fire safety solution.” Both technologies demonstrated high reliability, with system fault rates below 3% (2.9% for mist, 1.9% for sprinklers). Failures were mostly linked to fires starting outside the protected area or known faults. Systems installed in the fire’s room of origin were far more effective — underlining the importance of proper design and coverage. IWMA is addressing reliability further through updated guidelines and training initiatives focused on installation and maintenance quality. “This is good news for the entire fire protection sector,” added Lakkonen. “Both systems work. With smarter design and better training, performance will only keep improving.” IWMA remains committed to evidence-based fire safety and will continue supporting industry-wide improvements in system performance and standards. From the Expert – Rethinking Fire Detection in the Solar Expansion

As solar power rapidly expands within the global energy mix, its fire safety risks remain an often overlooked yet critical concern in the clean energy transition. Unlike traditional infrastructure, solar installations are often decentralised, located in hard-to-access areas, and exposed to variable environmental conditions. These characteristics can make effective fire detection more challenging—especially when system complexity increases with scale and layout. On rooftops, an overheating panel or faulty connector can generate smoke that enters HVAC systems, which typically supply fresh air to the building below. This can cause smoke detectors inside the building to trigger, even though the actual fire source is on the roof, delaying accurate detection and response. In greenfield sites, electrical fires can spark large-scale blazes, threatening not just equipment, but also nearby roads, wildlife, and local communities. Floating solar systems, now common on ponds and reservoirs, carry even more unique dangers. Water’s conductivity increases the risk of electrocution during fire events, while any toxic materials released can contaminate aquatic ecosystems and local water supplies. All of these scenarios demand one thing: Early, accurate fire detection that adapts to the unique risks of each environment. A Fast-Growing Sector with Emerging Risks The rapid expansion of solar infrastructure worldwide has outpaced many of the safety systems designed to protect it. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), nearly 75% of all new renewable energy capacity added globally in 2023 came from solar photovoltaic (PV) installations. This trend highlights solar’s increasingly central role in the global energy transition, and projections suggest even faster growth in the coming years. While this development is promising from a sustainability standpoint, it also underscores a gap in fire safety planning and regulation. In many cases, particularly with rapidly constructed or remote solar farms, comprehensive fire risk assessments may be overlooked or insufficient—leaving installations more vulnerable to fire-related incidents. Detection technologies that work well in conventional settings often struggle in large, open, or water-based solar environments. As solar becomes more widespread, ensuring safety at scale becomes not just a technical requirement, but an environmental and operational imperative. The answer is probably yes, and chances are you are not the only one experiencing this. The threat of wildfires and flooding is increasing worldwide in recent years. Often endangering communities, homes, business and leaving a devastating impact on nature. In these situations, it often happens that the existing fixed water supply system cannot deliver the quantity of water needed or an explosion or earthquake caused the fixed system to be completely wiped away. So, the question is not if your current system is enough, but whether it will still work when needed. When this is the case, there is no other alternative but to get water from an open source like a canal, river, lake or even open sea. But, without the right equipment you are still helpless if you cannot get to the water to get the water. The limitations of conventional pumping systems Conventional pumping systems are drafting pumps. These pumps need to be placed close to the water side to enable them to draft water through hard suctions hoses. For large capacity pumping units this may require up to 8-10 parallel suction hoses. A demanding and time consuming job. The problem with drafting pumps is that there is a limit to how far the water can be drafted. Besides, there is a limit as to how long the suction hoses can be and from what depth the water can be drafted from. Most important is the drafting height. It becomes nearly impossible to draft water from an open source if the drafting height exceeds 7.5 meters. And there is a price to be paid: the output capacity of the pump will only be 20-30% of its rated capacity. For example, a drafting pump with a rated capacity of 3000 lpm (800 GPM) at a 3 meters drafting height will only deliver 1000 lpm (260 GPM) when drafted from 5-7 meters. This is often not enough to fight large-scale fires effectively. However, there is a solution!
