PIERCE PASSES ISO 9001:2008 SURVEILLANCE AUDIT

(October 27, 2010) – Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, today announced that it has successfully completed its ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001:2008 Surveillance Audit by ABS Quality Evaluations (ABS QE), an independent third-party organization. ISO 9001:2008 is an internationally recognized standard that sets forth a set of requirements aimed at achieving customer satisfaction. Pierce completed its surveillance audit and there were no major or minor findings. The company was first certified to ISO 9001 standards in 1998. “The ISO 9001:2008 standard, which is recognized around the world, is extremely comprehensive. This reassures our customers that Pierce Manufacturing maintains consistency in all phases of our operations,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. “We’re extremely pleased to have gone through the surveillance without a single major or minor finding. It speaks volumes about the people and the processes we have in place to build quality vehicles that will perform for firefighters and the communities they serve.” Two types of auditing are required to become registered to the standard: auditing by an external certification body, such as ABS QE, and audits by internal staff trained for this process. The aim of the audit is a continual process of review and assessment, to verify that the system is working as intended. The audit also finds out how the system can improve and to correct or prevent problems identified. The ISO standards require that all employees in the company, especially upper management, embrace quality control in their day-to-day activities. “We have more than 25 internal auditors, throughout the company, who are organized into cross functional teams,” said Chris Bronikowski, Pierce Manufacturing director of quality and continuous improvement. “These are all employee volunteers, who gladly take on this extra responsibility to ensure that we are following procedures and are compliant with ISO 9001:2008 standard.” The International Organization for Standardization was established in 1947 and is an association of 170 members, with each representing their own country. Voice Sounders Enable Faster Evacuation in Dutch Garden Centres

Fire-Cryer® Plus voice sounders from Vimpex Fire-Cryer® Plus voice sounders from Vimpex have helped to provide a cost-effective evacuation solution for a problem caused by new building extensions at two large Dutch retail outlets. Two garden centres, Intratuin in IJsselstein and Tuincentrum Wolters near the small town of Overdinkel, had recently extended their premises to provide additional retail space. This provided Vimpex’s local partner Prevent IVG with a challenging design problem due to a major increase in the travel distance to the fire escape doors and thus in the Required Safe Egress Time (RSET). Performance based design calculations showed that the effect of the desired alterations in the layouts gave an undesirable effect on the safety of the occupants in case of fire – the RSET being more than the Available Safe Egress Time (ASET). Both buildings were already equipped with an approved fire alarm system and sounders producing the mandatory slow-whoop evacuation signal. Fire research has shown that the time to start evacuation is dependant upon the type of cue that staff and customers receive. Thus by changing the cue, the RSET could be improved. In both of these cases the actual egress time proved to be approximately 3 minutes too long compared to the required time when based on the application of a conventional warning signal. Only when using clear spoken directions and staff assistance could the required improvement in RSET be realised to the satisfaction of the fire engineers and the fire authorities. This left the fire protection engineers at Prevent IVG with the need to find a voice evacuation solution with a limited budget. The option to renew the existing PA equipment and cabling was undesirable due to increased cost and extended installation time, so Prevent IVG turned to Vimpex for the answer. At each garden centre approximately 30 Fire-Cryer® Plus multi-message voice sounders were installed on existing cabling, replacing conventional sounders. A combination of Standard, Midi and Maxi Fire-Cryer® Plus models were used, depending on the location and environment. The high sound output and rugged design of the Midi and Maxi units are ideal for outdoor areas or large open spaces. This ensured that a fire alarm alert, an evacuation message, an all-clear and a test message could be broadcast with a clarity that ensures everyone evacuates quickly and safely. By using the Fire-Cryer® Plus the required reduction in RSET of some 3 minutes was accomplished with a minimum of cost and to the satisfaction of the building’s owners, fire engineers, installers and authorities.

(October 21, 2010)  Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, today announced it has sold 32 Pierce wildland firefighting trucks to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) through its National Fire Equipment Program (NFEP). An initial fleet of 19 pumpers will be delivered this month to BLM units in Idaho, Utah, Oregon, and Nevada. A second, recently placed order of 13 pumpers will be delivered in early 2011. The vehicles will be used for both mobile attack firefighting, as well as structure protection in urban interface situations. "Wildfires are enormously dangerous and destructive, and are one of the biggest challenges facing the fire service today. They can destroy homes, ravage the environment and take lives,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. "The BLM is a national leader in fighting wildfires, and having the right trucks, tools and equipment is vital to their mission. We are proud Pierce wildland pumpers are playing a role in their efforts.” “These vehicles would typically be used by our initial attack engine crews as Type 4 wildland engines, but, with this latest Pierce delivery, six of the units will feature a new auxiliary pump that is capable of generating 150-gpm at 250-psi.,” said Elden Alexander, National Fire Equipment Program manager for the Bureau of Land Management, whose responsibilities include oversight for all BLM wildland fire equipment design. “This makes them more versatile, Type 3 vehicles – and it represents a great deal of input from state fire program managers, field level equipment users and the fire equipment industry.” The Pierce wildland all-wheel drive pumpers are built to BLM 667 and 667M specifications and are designed as initial attack engines that can reach fires in rough terrain before they threaten homes and lives. Each is built on a durable four-wheel drive chassis with maximum approach and departure angles and underbody clearance. Each features a 750 or 850-gallon water tank and a 20-gallon foam tank. The vehicles offer an auxiliary pump and foam system with true pump-and-roll capability to attack fast moving wildland fires. Alexander added, “The BLM employs an aggressive style of direct attack firefighting, and these units are engineered for both effective mobile firefighting capabilities, as well as pumping multiple lines for structure protection in urban interface situations.” The BLM, a leader in national wildland fire management efforts, undertakes a broad range of activities to protect the public, the natural landscape, wildlife habitat and national recreational areas. The NFEP has comprehensive oversight responsibilities for all BLM wildland fire equipment design, development, contracting/ procurement, distribution, and maintenance. The NFEP is located in the Office of Fire and Aviation Division of Fire Operations at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho. The NFEP is responsible for providing short-range and long-range planning, program management and leadership, guidance, coordination, and evaluation for national fire equipment development and procurement in the Bureau. The NFEP represents the Bureau in all aspects of fire equipment activities with interagency and international partners. The BLM firefighting fleet consists of approximately 578 pieces of dedicated wildland fire equipment that protect 245 million acres of BLM lands. Emergency response time reduced by 25% Madrid invests in security The increasing terrorism in the recent years, foremost the horrible bombings in 2004, led the city of Madrid to invest in their security installation and services. A key lesson was that more than one major incident can happen simultaneously, and emergency assets may be needed in more than one place. Different incidents may be related, or have nothing to do with one another—without a clear overall picture, it may be impossible to tell if there is an important pattern emerging. This potential for complexity poses a significant challenge for emergency managers. They not only need to coordinate activity, but also require a thorough understanding of everything happening in the metropolitan area so as to properly allocate limited resources to provide the best response to each incident. In addition, proactive measures such as limiting access to impacted areas, or crowd and traffic control for public events, has to be included in the mix. In order to coordinate the services of the fire department, police department and Samur (service of ambulances and urgencies) more effectivly and to have a quicker intervention time, the city of Madrid decided to built a new control centre. The Spanish control room company Floria Group completed the whole installation of the Centre of Emergencies of Madrid (CISEM), a project of the Community of Madrid in which Firemen, Police and Samur were unified in an unique Control Room, in order to combine all their resources, co-ordinating all the imputs that entered by the emergency European phone 112. ‘Video images coming from the traffic cameras can also be displayed.’ In this project Floria Group undertook all the functional and aesthetic aspects of the Control Room design and the integration of technology and services that were required for this operation. Floria group carried out the project of functional and aesthetic distribution that after an analysis of needs and objectives, culminated in a Control Room where the capacity was increased with a bigger number of users, greater useful surface and the space planning of functional areas, so that an operative isolation was obtained, eliminating thus the acoustic contamination, noise reduction coatings, illumination, compartmentation of areas, and equipment of technical furniture. Floria Group designed and executed all the necessary aspects to obtain an atmosphere of optimal work with a high degree of aesthetic. One of the most relevant areas of this Control Room was the eyevis display system integrated by Floria Group in close collaboration with the manufacturer eyevis. A videowall formed by 44 rear projection cubes, Type eyevis EC-67-XC-DL, in a 11 x 4 configuration, performing the state of the art DLP™ technology. This great screen of approx 15m in length and 4m in height, allows the monitoring of the processes of management and control of the existing material and human resources in all the Municipal Firemen Stations, as well as a just in time listing of the interventions in course.   Another area of the Eyevis videowall displays the situation of the events and also the real situation of the vehicles that are taking part on it, by means of GPS technology. This representation is made over a digital picture of the Municipality of Madrid or over a layer of street guide, including additional information on a digital photography of the Municipality of Madrid or on a layer of street guide in which it has additional information on the constructions and avenues. Video images coming from the traffic cameras can also be displayed. The management of the whole system is made from a computer that incorporates the most modern processors, and in case of a failure in any of the components, the system is able to detect it and to pass the control to another system that is in operation. The redundancy of the system is not only for the equipment; it has a true replica of the Eyevis videowall that is working on another physical backup videowall. IBM Business Partner Indra, a leading regional systems integrator specialising in the public sector, teamed with IBM to provide the integrated, service-oriented IT infrastructure that would make CISEM a reality, along with needed business process transformation to enable coordination among all of the stakeholders. Because each of the first responder agencies had its own communication technology, a common mobile infrastructure had to be deployed. Most vehicles, from police cars to ambulances to fire engines, are equipped with mobile wireless computers or PDAs that are connected to CISEM. The mobile infrastructure is critical; it provides true interoperability among the various agencies and also enables a two-way interchange of information—which gives managers vital, on-the-scene input that helps them develop a better understanding of what is happening in the field. The effective coordination of responders depends on reliable communications, so close attention was paid to creating a reliable way to keep all agencies in touch. A multilayered, redundant communications infrastructure links to existing telephony systems, VoIP, satellite communications, a private radio network and 3G wireless networks to ensure continuous communication. IBM WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager provides seamless, reliable, secure access to CISEM resources by automatically selecting the best available network and encrypting all communications. IBM Tivoli Directory Integrator adds an additional layer of access security. CISEM’s need to maintain consistency across all emergency resources makes the rapid development, integration and uniform rollout of information and applications essential, so IBM helped build a flexible, powerful SOA platform to enable it. New information flows and business processes are built and managed using IBM WebSphere Integration Developer and IBM WebSphere Process Server.
