For G4S and Gent Customer Northern Ireland commemorated the centenary year of the Titanic tragedy in momentous style by creating one of the world’s largest visitor attractions. The £77m landmark building, Titanic Belfast, opened its doors on March 31 this year and is expecting more than 400,000 visitors annually. The 14,000sqm venue accommodates nine galleries of interactive exhibition space, including a dark ride, underwater exploration theatre, recreations of the ship’s decks and cabins and a luxurious conference and banqueting suite with capacity for up to 1,000 people. Exactly 100 years after the infamous ship left the shores of Belfast, the Titanic Signature Building, now known as Titanic Belfast, launched with a series of spectacular events to mark the opening. Visitors to the exhibition venue were guaranteed an unbelievable and unique experience, and thanks to the main security provider G4S Fire Security, a highly safe and secure environment. Challenges The unique architectural design of the building was influenced by several maritime themes, including ice crystals, ships’ hulls and the insignia of the White Star Line. Its stand-out exterior façade, which replicates four 90 feet high hulls, is clad in 3,000 individual anodized aluminium shards. Crawford Boyce, Director of G4S Fire Security, explains: “The interior is just as unique as the striking exterior, so when it came to the fire detection and alarm equipment we had to adopt some innovative installation techniques. The majority of the gallery spaces are fitted with sound absorbing non rigid foam sheets attached to the underside of the ceiling, making the surface installation of cabling and equipment below both difficult and time consuming.” The limited timescale on the project added to the challenge: Installation commenced in August 2011 and the building had to be completed by March 2012 in time for the Titanic centenary festival. The initial brief from the client was to provide a fire detection and voice evacuation system to the main building to BS5839 part 1: 2002 category L2. Solution Before opening its doors to the public, Northern Ireland’s newest landmark, located in the heart of Belfast on the slipways where RMS Titanic was built, was fitted with a specially designed fire and security solution. Visitors have been given the ultimate protection through the solution, which provides a state of the art fire detection system, PA/VA, CCTV, disabled refuge and WC alarms, aspirating detectors, as well as intruder and access control & induction loop systems. G4S Fire Security was awarded the contract to be the main security provider to Titanic Belfast as a result of its strong working relationship with the building’s main electrical contractor, Harvey Group Plc. The fire detection and alarm system selected for this impressive structure was provided by fire industry experts, Gent by Honeywell. Do we have to wait for a death following a kitchen extract fire to see stricter enforcement of both health and safety compliance and, critically, contractor competence in kitchen extract system fire safety cleaning?” On Friday 14 September 2012 firefighters fought for over two hours to control a blaze at a fire in a restaurant on Commercial Road in Stepney E1. As well as damage to the restaurant’s ground floor, a flat above the premises and the building’s roof, the fire appears to have spread through ductwork for the restaurant’s extract ventilation system, damaging it in the process. Twelve people left the building before the Brigade arrived but there were no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Nicholls continues, “Fire prevention is obviously a major priority in any kitchen, but ensuring it doesn’t spread through poorly cleaned and maintained extract systems should be just as high a priority for all catering outlets. We can no longer afford to play lip service to this important but all too often overlooked aspect of essential maintenance.” Eight fire engines and around 20 firefighters from Shadwell, Kingsland, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Old Kent Road, Bow and Stratford fire stations were in attendance. It is estimated that 25% of commercial kitchen fires are made significantly worse due to grease build up in ductwork. At Kings Cross Station A specially commissioned, aluminium, double leaf floor access door, manufactured by Bilco UK, has been installed at King’s Cross Station as part of a major refurbishment programme. The bespoke floor access door, which measures more than 3 metres by 1 metre, has been installed at ground floor level at the top of a flight of stairs. It provides an emergency exit for staff working in the basement floor. By chopping up limos Firefighters are set to embark on a record-breaking car-cut up on Monday, when they remove the roofs of five stretch limousines and Hummers as part of a drive to improve emergency service response at the scene of serious road traffic accidents. Firefighters from London Fire Brigade and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service will take part in the exercise, which will be at the headquarters of Surrey FRS in Reigate on Monday 17 September at 9am. They will be attempting the world record for the world’s longest ‘roof flap,’ determined by the length of the roofs they will be removing from the cars. The cars, which were being used illegally to ferry people to and from parties, had been removed from service and were given to the fire service for crews to practice their life-saving skills on. At the scene of road traffic accidents, firefighters often have to use specialist equipment to remove the roofs of cars in order to rescue trapped people. The exercise comes just weeks before London Fire Brigade hosts the World Rescue Challenge, which will be the biggest firefighter event in the world and will see fire crews from across the globe practice the vital rescue and first aid skills they provide to those with injuries at the scene of serious incidents like road traffic accidents. The event is free to members of the public and takes place at ExCeL London on 18-20 October. Watch Manager, Nick Burge, from the London Fire Brigade, who will be at the exercise, said: “It’s extremely unusual to have the opportunity to cut up limos and Hummers. It’s so unusual in fact, that we’re going to enter it as a world record attempt. This will be a great chance for us to practice our life-saving rescue skills as these cars present different challenges than normal sized cars. “It will be an excellent warm-up for the World Rescue Challenge as both London Fire Brigade and Surrey FRS are entering teams to take part. A spokesperson for Surrey Fire & Rescue Service said: “Chopping up cars against the clock might seem like a bit of light-hearted fun but exercises like this have a serious point. They help us to hone and improve our rescue skills and this will hopefully lead to more lives being saved at the scene of car accidents. “People might think there’d be some rivalry between the two fire brigades, but actually this is all about learning new skills from one another rather than competing to be the best.”
