Applications start on March 21st The application process for the International Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award 2014 starts on 21 March – this worldwide competition recognises outstanding commitment to public services. Fire brigades from around the world can apply at www.world-of-firefighters.com and win a trip to visit the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). No matter how varied the nature of duties and the structure of fire brigades in many countries may be, they all have one thing in common: firefighters give their utmost 365 days a year on every call-out, even putting their own lives at risk in emergency situations to save others. Once again in 2014, following its successful launch in the previous year, the International Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award aims to recognise this commitment. From 21 March, fire brigade teams can apply for the title of ‘International Firefighting Team of the Year 2014’ by logging on to www.world-of-firefighters.com and submitting the details of their most impressive and spectacular call-outs. The competition is open to all fire brigade teams except those in Germany, where a national contest is getting under way at the same time. The aim of the competition organiser Magirus is to increase public awareness of the extensive services provided by local fire brigades. CFA volunteers given toxic fire-fighting foam

Deemed too dangerous for career fire-fighters CFA volunteers have been given toxic firefighting foam this bushfire season that career fire officers are banned from using because it contains dangerous chemicals. The foam was pulled from CFA fire trucks in 1997 after studies linked it to serious health problems such as infertility, blood and bone marrow disorders and dermatitis. Paid CFA firefighters working on the recent Grampians bushfires stumbled on the banned stocks in the volunteers’ firefighting arsenal and noticed a teenage volunteerdeveloped a serious rash. The CFA yesterday denied there was any health risk attached to any of its foams. It is understood the CFA bought a large batch of the banned foam last summer when it ran out of the usual product, known as First Class. The banned substance — Forexpan S — was brought into the stateto get through last summer’sfires. Unlike the banned foam, First Class does not contain a compound considered hazardous to human health. The CFA decided to give the banned foam tovolunteers to use till stocks ran out. An internal CFA email warned managers to be “considerate of the heightened sensitivities” surrounding what “could be perceived as special treatment for our career staff”. “Where we can, let’s use up this Forexpan S stock during these fires to get it off our books so we can then revert back using First Class,” the email dated January 30 stated. The CFA says both foams are equally safe and that use of First Class “simply comes down to an agreement of brand of foam to be used”. An October 1997 article in the Ballarat Courier said the CFA had banned its use because it “may present major health risks”. Geelong City CFA brigade senior station officer Pat Geary said he and CFA management knew the foam was unsafe. The 52-year-old was paid WorkCover compensation after developing a chronic skin disorder after trial use of the foam in the mid-1990s. He said when he went to give blood, they turned him down because of a low red blood cell count. He was a strike team leader at the Grampians fire when staff discovered the Forexpan S stocks. “I’m disappointed that the CFA didn’t have the common courtesy to advise us.” CFA spokesman Craig Rowston said Forexpan S was used by other fire authorities.

Designers, architects: Consider fire protection from the outset

By Natasha Marsh, UBM The design process, whether its object is a product, system, or a building, begins with a brief, which is then met with a certain specification. A project’s constraints and limitations must be understood clearly to satisfy the initial brief. The beginning of the process is the most crucial stage to factor into these considerations. Once production has commenced, alterations and amendments to design, materials, and manufacturing methods can significantly affect cost and time. Knock-on effects Fire protection has commonly been the fire safety officer’s sole responsibility and is often not considered at the planning stage. Building inspections can all too easily overlook inadequate fire-stopping materials. Replacing sub-standard materials can be expensive and encroach further into precious floor space on a shiny new development. Pre-design Before designers and architects are even appointed to a project, planners and developers should factor in essential fire-stopping measures. Planning regulations don’t currently require a detailed description or proof of which fire-stopping methods will be deployed within a development until construction has already begun. Fire regulations should be a prerequisite for planning approval and the conditions should clearly state what needs to be achieved before a spade has even been put in the ground. It’s all in the education Educating developers on the importance of fire protection within buildings is crucial to changing the mindsets of incorporating fire-protection considerations into building design at an early stage. Attitudes are beginning to change as technology evolves and fire protection measures are no longer seen as cumbersome inconveniences. It does, however, come with a price tag — which is where value engineering can help. But this is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to reaching anyone actually building new structures. It’s a frightening thought that fire protection is often afforded a lower priority than the intricate splendor of an ornate ceiling. Aesthetics can even outweigh the practicalities of escape procedures, emergency crews entering a building, and a building’s accessibility for emergency vehicles. South African miners trapped in Doornkop Gold Mine fire

The fire began on Tuesday evening about 1,700m below ground Rescue workers in South Africa are trying to free nine miners still trapped underground after a fire at Doornkop mine west of Johannesburg. Eight other miners have successfully been brought to the surface, the mine owners Harmony Gold said. "Efforts continue to establish the whereabouts of a further nine employees who are currently unaccounted for," spokesman James Duncan told the BBC. The fire began on Tuesday evening about 1,700m (5,600ft) below ground. Mr Duncan said rescue teams were struggling to access the affected area because of smoke and rock fall. There is some confusion about how exactly the fire began. Harmony Gold has confirmed there was some seismic activity in the area. South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers says this resulted in the collapse of underground rocks which caused the fire. "It… caused damage to ventilation pipes, electric cables and water pipes. The damage to electric cables triggered fire underground which is still burning," the NUM said in a statement. The eight workers who were successfully rescued on Wednesday had managed to reach a "refuge bay", where there was compressed air and water kept for such incidents. The BBC’s Andrew Harding in Johannesburg says the nine missing mine workers will be carrying their own packs of oxygen and Harmony Gold hopes they will have made their way to other refuge bays underground. In recent years the majority of deaths underground have occurred in illegal mines, he says. The Harmony Gold team has left the "Mining Indaba", Africa’s largest annual mining conference, being held in Cape Town. The meeting has been overshadowed by a major strike which is currently crippling South Africa’s platinum production. The mining industry is a vital part of the South African economy.

Connecticut Fire Department employs drone at quarry fire

Made use of a drone for the first time in the department’s history The Branford (CT) Fire Department made use of a drone for the first time in the department’s history during a fire at the J& J Blasting Company in Stony Creek Quarry last week. Firefighters called an evacuation based on the drones finding, causing the temporary displacement of 862 people who lived within a mile of the fire, according to the Branford Eagle. It was initially feared the fire was near explosives that might ignite, but a drone was flown over the site to take photos and fire officials later determined the location of the fire was about 30 feet from the explosives. At that point, a fire apparatus responded to the site to put the fire out. Fire Chief Jack Ahern told the Eagle last night that the fire was the result of human error, an accident caused by an employee who inadvertently burned boxes that once contained explosives. The burning took place near rubber mats made of tires that are used in explosive activity. There was snow nearby, it was difficult to see, and the embers that were thought to be out were not. The mats then ignited, causing huge columns of dense black smoke to rise from the quarry yesterday afternoon. The fire could be seen from miles around.

Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults conference The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 2014 Remembering When™: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults conference will be held June 4-6 at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. NFPA will award scholarships to teams from up to 25 communities to attend. These teams of two will be made up of representatives of fire departments and home visit agencies across the United States and Canada and will discuss best practices regarding outreach to older adults through group presentations and home visits. Fire departments are asked to partner with an agency whose main outreach to older adults is through home visits. According to NFPA statistics, adults aged 65 and older are twice as likely to be killed in a home fire compared to the general population, and falls are the leading cause of death from injuries to those in the same age group. NFPA hosts this conference annually as part of its ongoing effort to help reduce fires and falls among older adults. The Remembering When program was developed by NFPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible. Together, NFPA and CDC created 16 key safety messages – eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention – to help educate and protect the most vulnerable of older adults. Each year, NFPA awards scholarships to establish partnerships between fire departments and home visit agencies for the implementation of Remembering When at the local level.
