Demonstration of Ziegler Hydraulic Pump and the LF 20 KatS

 After the successful presentation of the LF 20 KatS with the integrated hydraulic swimming pump at Interschutz 2015, the Albert Ziegler GmbH has demon-strated various usage possibilities of this pump. The location of the fire brigade of Mülheim an der Ruhr has offered optimal geographic conditions for this. On September 4th and 5th, 2015, demonstrations of the LF 20 KatS and the Ziegler hydraulic swimming pump took place at the fire brigade of Mülheim an der Ruhr. An increasing number of meteorological events with numerous floodings as a result of heavy rain gave the impulse for this innovation developed by Ziegler. The LF 20 KatS provides the optimal basis to integrate the Ziegler hydraulic pump in the compartment. This vehicle also contains the proven Ziegler ALPAS super-structure, the airbag and belt pretensioning System Z-Protec, the ambient lighting Z-UB4K with the Top-Integro as well as a portable fire pump PFPN 10-1500 Ziegler Ultra Power 4 in the lowered compartment. In addition, the vehicle has a Ziegler hygiene Board PUSH and 8 removable car-tridges for the relocation of hoses while driving. New is that the hydraulic pump system can be used to transport water to the centrifugal fire pump of the vehicle. Due to the inlet pressure the performance can be doubled. In operation without pressure this pump can deliver up to 10,000 liter of water per minute along with the vehicle pump, the portable fire pump Ziegler UP 4 and a submersible sewage pump ATP20R. In addition, the hydraulic pump allows the usage to remove water from large deep or inaccessible waters without alarming special devices. Furthermore, it is perfectly suited for applications with moderate water consumption where alerting of specialized equipment would not be justified. The hydraulic pump is installed compactly between the compartments in the front of the body. This pump has hydraulic hoses each of a length of 30 m. With a hydraulic hose reel the hoses are rolled up electrically. Ziegler discusses two modes of operation of the pump. One way is to use the pump in series with the pump of the vehicle. It is fed with inlet pressure in the vehicle pump and a large amounts of wa-ter under pressure can be pumped up. Water extraction can be located 30 m away from the vehi-cle. Large differences in height between vehicle and open waters do not constitute any obstacle. The second mode is to use the hydraulic pump parallel to the vehicle pump. Thereby a a maximum flow rate can be achieved. The water extraction can also be located 30 m away from the vehicle. The pump can be used in many ways. One possibility would be for example flooding, where a max-imum flow rate is necessary. Furthermore, the hydraulic pump allows not only the water extraction, but also the operation without pressure from great depths of up to 30 m. Unfavorable or difficult ac-cessible terrain represent no obstacles. In addition, with the hydraulic pump a maximum pressure to deliver water over long distances or to supply turrets with great performance can be achieved. Water extraction from a bridge that extends 11 meters above the Ruhr has aroused great interest among the participants of the demonstration. The fire brigade Mülheim an der Ruhr, Ibbenbüren, Duisburg, representatives of the fire brigades of Velbert, Wesel and Wesseling and Polish delega-tions were on-site during the demonstrations. At the second demonstration, an exercise of the vol-untary fire brigade of Mülheim at the harbour of the river Ruhr was carried out. Especially, the hose laying over longer distance with three inch-hoses and the maximum pressure support has ensured attention. In summary, it can be highlighted that placing the hydraulic pump in standard firefighting vehicles does not lead to any space or weight problems. With respect to the performance, the pre-pressure of the pump allows delivery of 4000 l/min water through a vehicle fire pump with 2000 l/min. In ad-dition, the system is ready for usage very quick and can easily be installed by only 2 firefighters, so that no request for special vehicles with removable loaders, trailers or other equipment is neces-sary. With regard to the logistics, there is a further advantage that ordinary hoses can be used to transport the water.

Autronica’s AUTRO SAFE® System to protect operations

In one of Norway’s largest oil fields Autronica today announced that the AUTRO SAFE® Integrated Fire and Gas Detection System has been selected by Statoil for its operations in the Johan Sverdrup oil field in the North Sea. The Archive of Serbia is now protected by Apollo

Archives contain highly combustible materials like paper and cardboard For a building that is both a historic monument and houses millions of records – mostly on paper- fire protection is of utmost importance. Fires in libraries and archives cause two types of damage: material loss of the collections and perhaps the building and, social damage. Society has suffered some extraordinary losses from ancient times to the present, from the fire at the Alexandria Library to the fire at the Library of the Academy of Sciences in the former Soviet Union. Archives cannot be replaced. Once they have been destroyed, they are lost forever. Opened in 1900, the Archive of Serbia is the country’s national archive, located in Belgrade. The current building was dedicated in 1928 to house and protect documents and other materials produced by state bodies and organizations of Serbia before 1918, as well as documents produced during and after World War II. Although the National Archive was heavily damaged during World War II, the archives still hold a large amount of information dating back to early medieval times – over ten kilometres of historical records in 972 archives and 51 collections. By definition, archives contain highly combustible materials like paper and cardboard. Tightly packed shelves positioned closely together accelerate the progress of any fire and even small amounts of smoke and soot can damage ancient and valuable documents. Water, used to extinguish the fire, can also cause a lot of damage. To avoid as much damage as possible, early warning fire detection is essential. When called in to design, install and commission a new fire protection system for the Archive of Serbia, Apollo’s partner, TVI Ltd in Belgrade, specified Apollo’s XP95 optical smoke detectors and XP95 heat detectors. Vladimir Zrnić from TVI said: “Designing a fire detection system for the archive was challenging and interesting at the same time. We knew that the air would not be completely clear and that rising temperatures had to be detected extremely early to avoid fire spreading rapidly as it would in a room filled with very old, and therefore very dry, paper. “The XP95 Heat Detector from Apollo monitors temperature by using a single thermistor which provides a count output proportional to the external air temperature. The standard heat detector will report an alarm at a temperature as low as 55 degrees Celsius, whereas the XP95 Optical Smoke Detector works using the light scatter principle and is ideal for applications where slow-burning or smouldering fires are likely. Both are ideally suited for this project.” Overall, more than 80 devices were installed covering ten software zones in the four-storey building. Fire suppression systems cover three floors of the four-storey building with an overall floor space of 5000m2. Special considerations to be taken into account included the above average dust levels and very high ceilings. In combination with heating and ventilation systems, which can cause stratification, high rooms can be challenging for detection systems. Is your organisation ready for the new chemical warning labels?

Final phase of the transition to the UN’s Global Harmonised System has started June saw the start of the final phase of the United Nations sponsored programme to harmonise the chemical warning symbols found on many industrial and household products on a global basis. As a result, the warning labels on many products used in industry have changed. Stuart Longworth, Chairman of the Chemical Hazards Communication Society, says the changes will benefit industry and consumers, "The UN’s Global Harmonised System aims to harmonise the symbols and warning statements used on the labels on a global basis. They will make life easier for businesses when they import and export products, and consumers when they travel because eventually there will be only one set of symbols to deal with throughout most of the world." The labels are commonly found on numerous products used across a wide range of industries and alert users to the hazards associated with chemicals in the products to enable them to take appropriate care when using them. The design of the new symbols comprises a white diamond with red borders containing a black pictogram. Some are similar to the previous versions and are easily recognised, but several are new. To help users familiarise themselves with the new labels, the Chemical Hazards Communication Society (CHCS) has created a handy guide which can be downloaded from a specially created website at http://www.understandthelabel.org.uk. To give industry and consumers time to adapt to this new system, manufacturers have been able to continue using the "old" warning labels over a transitional period. The timing of the switch depends on whether the chemical is a pure substance or a component in a mixture. Labels for substances have already been harmonised. The deadline for mixtures, which will include many products used in industry, was 1st June 2015, although products already labelled with the "old" warning symbols and on the shelves on that date can continue to be supplied until 1st June 2017.

Two new innovations from Interschutz  Vetter, the leading manufacturer of emergency pneumatics presented two trade fair innovations during Interschutz 2015: With the S.Tec 12 Lifting Bags the company is putting a lifting bag on the market with 12-bar technology as the very first pneumatic rescue technology supplier. The Connectable Bags C.Tec with 10 bar operating pressure were also presented. Combining three bags can create lifting heights of up to 2.10 metres (82 inches). First lifting bag with 12-bar technology "With our new S.Tec 12 Lifting Bags we are able to boost the lifting force of our tried and tested 8-bar bags by an additional 50 percent on the identical area of one square metre", according to Karina Geuenich, Product Manager at Vetter. Volunteer Fire Chief, Dr. Charles Addington II, of Wolfforth Fire & EMS in Wolfforth, Texas and career Fire Chief, Dan Eggleston, of the Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue in Charlottesville, Virginia are this year’s recipients. Winners (selected by a committee appointed by the IAFC) are honored for their dedication and leadership in fire and emergency services. His service has demonstrated a dedication to other fire service professionals as well as to the recruitment of a new generation of such professionals. For the last 13 years, Eggleston has served as Fire Rescue Chief – overseeing 14 fire rescue stations and 750 career and volunteer personnel of this combination department – for the historic Virginia County of Albemarle. Under Chief Eggleston’s leadership, a collective of volunteer and combination departments have been unified into a high performing combination career/volunteer fire rescue system that provides cost-effective comprehensive public safety services to the county’s diverse population of approximately 100,000 residents in an area of 726 square miles. Automatic and mutual aide agreements with surrounding jurisdictions, state/federal agencies, and private partners have been established under the Chief’s direction, as have career and professional development initiatives. Chief Eggleston’s work as a board member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, since 2013, and as a board member of its Volunteer & Combination Officers Section (VCOS), since 2007, illustrates his comprehensive contribution to the fire service. Just one example of that work is Chief Eggleston’s facilitation of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network summit that resulted in the 2013 publication of “Taking Action Against Cancer in the Fire Service”, a white paper dedicated to reducing the incidence of cancer in firefighters. Chief Eggleston’s 37-year tenure with the fire service in Virginia includes his service as Fire Chief/Emergency Manager for the City of Franklin and, before that, his service with the Chesterfield Fire Department where he began his fire service career as a firefighter in 1978. Volunteer Fire Chief Honoree – Dr. Charles Addington II of Wolfforth Fire & EMS in Wolfforth, Texas The accomplishments of Chief Charles Addington II reflect a truly unique individual whose career is epitomized by excellence and a drive to serve his community, region, and state as a fire chief, physician, medical director, mayor, teacher and businessman. He joined Wolfforth Fire and EMS in 1996. He is currently in his 20th year with the department and 15th as its fire chief. The Wolfforth Fire Department was established in 1954 and provides fire and rescue services to the City of Wolfforth – with a population of about 3,670 (at the 2010 census) and a 3.1 square mile area – as well as an 88 square mile area in Southwest Lubbock County. The fire department currently consists of 28 dedicated volunteers. In 2004, the all-volunteer Wolfforth Volunteer Emergency Medical Service that had been established in 1977 was incorporated with the Wolfforth Volunteer Fire Department; it became a paid, full-time service in October 2006. Also Dr. Addington was named its Firefighter of the Year in 2001. He is the Chief of the Wolfforth Fire Academy, which trains sixty plus students each year using the curriculum of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Chief Addington is a member of the Texas Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Texas State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association – EMS Advisory Board as well as numerous other professional medical organizations. In 2012, Chief Addington completed the four-year National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program in two and one-half years. He has also completed the Texas A&M Fire Service Chief Executive Officer course. Addington is a doctor with a medical practice in Wolfforth. He is also a licensed paramedic, the chief of a regional HAZMAT team, the Medical Director for: South Plains EMS (30 counties); Lubbock Fire Department; the emergency room at Lubbock Heart Hospital; Lubbock County STAR Team (Special Tactics & Rescue); and the Lubbock Police Department SWAT Team.
