Chubb launches new secure customer portal

Chubb Fire & Security Limited is further enhancing its customer service capabilities through ChubbmySite, a new online account service which enables UK-based customers to coordinate their fire and security maintenance contracts through one simple, secure and integrated portal. Chubb, a leading provider of security and fire-safety solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. ChubbmySite includes invoice and statement management, where customers can securely view and print their invoices and statements, switch to direct debit payment or make secure online payments. The portal also allows customers to view the system activity on their monitored intruder alarms, including the times that their intruder systems are set and unset, which can be valuable to multi-site customers. It also provides a log of their previous and booked engineer visits and service history, and enables them to change aspects of their contract such as their nominated keyholder, which proves useful when reassigning duties during employee planned or unplanned absences. “ChubbmySite gives the customer full transparency of what we do, when we do it and where we do it,” said Colin Leatherbarrow, Product Solutions Director, Chubb Fire & Security. “For our small and medium-sized enterprise customers, it cuts out paperwork and simplifies the process of ensuring compliance with legal and insurance requirements. For larger premises and multi-site estates, it gives greater visibility and control to Health & Safety and risk managers who may be based in a remote location.” The new service was launched to create an easy yet secure way for customers to manage their contracts, and also supports both the customers’ and Chubb’s environmental goals to reduce the output of paper.

How will Brexit affect the fire industry?

According to a survey conducted by the FIA, less than 12% of businesses within the fire industry say that Britain’s exit from the EU will positively affect business in the coming months and years. The survey, which polled members on their views of the result of the referendum, had 179 responses from businesses across the UK and indicates there is a strong feeling of uncertainty regarding the future of the UK as a whole, and what might happen next for businesses. “The immediate uncertainty appears to have already had the effect of delaying investment decisions. This will, of course, impact on construction and other projects. The long-term future is less clear and would depend upon the exit ‘deal’ reached with the EU,” said one responder.

Charity car wash held to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and youngster with rare condition

A ‪charity‬ car wash is being held at Eccleston Community Fire Station on the 2 July to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity and an Eccleston youngster battling a rare genetic condition. Firefighters at Eccleston Community Fire Station are holding the car wash at the station, on Millfields, between 10am and 4pm to raise funds for 12-year-old Melissa Adams, who was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome in 2006. The condition means Melissa is unable to speak, has poor mobility skills, suffers epilepsy and needs 24-hour care. Funds raised from the car wash will go towards ‘Melissa’s Smile Fund’ set up by Melissa’s mum Kat and brother Jacob, to provide Melissa with essential equipment she needs as she grows up. This includes a sensory room, which Melissa’s family hope to create as a place of calm for Melissa when she has seizures and when her lack of communications skills prove too much for her. Proceeds will also be donated to The Fire Fighter’s Charity, which provides treatment and support for serving and retired firefighters, and their families, in times of need. Watch Manager Steve McHale said: “Firefighters from Red Watch at Eccleston Community Fire Station have organised a joint charity car wash with Melissa’s family and friends to assist in raising money for two great causes.” “We hope everyone who lives nearby, or who is visiting the area on Saturday, will come along to show their support however they can.” “It will be a great day and hopefully we can help raise funds for two very well-deserving charities.”

Multi-criteria detectors: The future in fire detection?

The introduction of multi-criteria detectors has given purchasers increased flexibility and functionality in their fire detection systems. According to the latest IHS Fire Detection & Suppression Report, the global multi-criteria detectors market was worth $264.8 million (£1.9 million) in 2015. The market is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 6.6% between 2015 to 2020. IHS found that multi-criteria detectors which combine multiple detection technologies have become more common in the fire detectors market for the following three reasons: 1. The increasing number of mixed-use facilities has created demand for detectors that can function in complex environments, while meeting the demand of multiple customers. For example, the increasing number of facilities that combine retail, restaurants and lodging create unique challenges for building owners and fire detector manufacturers. IHS found that the risk of fire varies in each environment – each requiring a different type of detector. Combining multiple technologies into a single unit means that fire detectors will be able to meet the needs of various clients. 2. IHS found that the trend to multi-criteria detectors is mainly caused by customers desire to reduce the number of detection devices installed in their facilities. The fact that fire systems in most instances continue to be a ‘must’ purchase by law, means some end users want to see fewer detectors installed in their facilities. Because of this situation, multi-criteria detectors are more often being specified in projects where aesthetics are a concern. 3. The price of multi-criteria detectors continues to decline, as more systems are installed and competition in the fire detection market increases. IHS found that declining prices are contributing to more rapid adoption of multi-criteria detectors, as some customers that were once priced out of this market have now started to realise the value of this detector type. The increased adoption of multi-criteria detectors is expected to continue, increasing the opportunity for fire detection product manufacturers. Currently, these detectors are viewed as a premium product mostly installed in high-end projects. As the price of multi-criteria detectors becomes more competitive, their use is expected to become more mainstream and manufacturers will find new opportunities to sell these detectors within medium-sized projects.
