International logistics centre in Kazakhstan protected by new Apollo detectors

Kazakhstan has been at the centre of international logistics ever since the times of the famous Silk Road more than 2000 years ago, part of which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, modern logistics connect even the furthest corners of this large Asian country the size of Western Europe, enabling the utilisation of its vast mineral resources and enormous economic potential. Due to this Kazak transport company LLP Continental Logistics is building a network of transportation and logistics centres across the country. One of the first new logistics centres completed by Continental Logistics is in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan which has seen rapid growth and development over the last few decades. Generally seen as a major architectural and engineering achievement, the logistics centre is designed to offer all services required to coordinate the national and international movement of goods. The new complex provides all types of warehousing and logistics services, from export and import to national distribution services in Kazakhstan. Covering 51 hectares, the logistics centre includes a dry warehouse, a climate controlled depot and a container yard, as well as a shopping centre. An office complex and hotel are due to be built in the near future. Kazak company Asia Techno Complect won the contract to design and install the fire safety system. They chose Apollo Fire detectors and sounders, and Kentec panels for the project. The design of the fire safety system for such a large, wide-spread complex had to meet special conditions.  The logistics centre was divided into 35 fire zones, and Asia Techno Complect installed 1400 smoke and heat detectors, and 12 panels. Modular interfaces were installed to control alarm signals, suppression systems and building ventilation in the event of a fire. Apollo Addressable Beam detectors were used to protect vast open spaces within the logistics centre. Detectors from the Apollo Discovery range were chosen because Apollo products comply with international standards, are proven to be reliable and are easy to install.

WES+ wireless fire alarm system installed by top Germany construction site insurer

Ramtech Electronics’ WES+ wireless fire alarm system has been specified by BG BAU Praxiszentrum as an example of best practice in construction site alarming and evacuating systems. BG Bau, Germany’s statutory accident insurer for the construction industry, has installed WES+ in its Nuremberg training centre principally because it is the only wireless fire alarm system in Europe to fully comply with EN 54. EN 54 fire detection and fire alarm systems sets the standard for design, operation, production, testing and manufacture in Europe. EN 54 is the standard against which fire alarm systems should be measured and to comply, the complete unit – and every unit in the system including the base station, fire call point or smoke and heat detection unit – should have been tested in accordance with the relevant section(s) of EN 54. WES+ features innovative, latest-generation wireless technology that offers construction sites across UK and Europe many unique features. These include a 3+ year battery life, cost-effective (no wiring, so no need for specialist installation and can be re-used on future projects), an unlimited number of units on one site and ability to quickly add and remove units as the build/demolition progresses. The WES+ system has already generated a huge amount of interest at the training centre in Nuremberg, which is visited by 4-5000 inspectors, clients, construction companies and health and safety bodies each year. BG Bau installed WES+ on a 4 storey mock construction site within the training facility to give visitors a practical, hands-on insight into how the system works. It is fully operational and that means visitors can experience the benefits of having a wireless fire alarm and evacuating system on site for themselves. WES+ comprises manual fire alarm call points that are installed so that the system is interlinked, which means that if a visitor activates just one of the call points, all four storeys at the training centre’s construction site receives the same audible and visual alert signal, even if the ‘fire’ is contained to just one of them and a single call point is activated. This completely secure mesh network means that personnel can evacuate immediately. Where heat or smoke detectors are incorporated into the system, it provides automatic cover 24/7, ensuring that the site is protected even when personnel are not present. Being a wireless system makes WES+ easy to install, avoiding the need for specialist trades. It also allows the units to be easily repositioned as the construction schedule progresses – visitors to the Nuremberg training centre can try adding or removing units and then easily configuring them with the base station in seconds. The Base Station itself delivers extensive system reporting and configuration functionality for the fire alarm system across the site. Once an alarm is activated, the base station allows personnel to identify quickly which unit has been triggered. Dieter Terner, spokesperson for BG Bau Praxiszentrum said: “We installed WES+ in our Nuremberg training centre because we were impressed with its technical capabilities and regulatory credentials. The fact that it is very easy to use and re-use means that there really is no reason why a construction site shouldn’t be using an EN54 compliant wireless fire alarm system.” Adam Kovics, Export Sales Manager at Ramtech Electronics, said: “BG Bau leads the market in setting the benchmark for work practices and safety in Germany. WES+ remains the only wireless fire alarm that is fully compliant with EN 54 and our uncompromising approach to quality and regulatory compliance means that it can be used on any construction sites across UK or Europe.”

Nine Pierce Enforcer apparatus purchased by South Carolina’s Horry County Fire Rescue

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, announces the sale of nine Pierce® Enforcer™ apparatus to Horry County Fire Rescue located in Conway, South Carolina. The purchase includes eight Pierce Enforcer pumpers and one Pierce Ascendant™ aerial ladder. The apparatus – purchased through a national cooperative purchasing organisation – will be delivered in 2017. “Horry County Fire Rescue is an excellent department, responsible for one of the largest and most diverse fire protection districts in the southeast, and we’re honored to be selected by them,” said Matt McLeish, Pierce Manufacturing Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. “The Enforcer chassis continues to grow sales and increase market share due to the value and versatility it represents. The chassis is an outstanding choice to meet the needs of this department and the communities it serves.” “With these new Enforcer apparatus, we are well into the process of standardising our fleet, to develop vehicles as similar as possible for our fire-fighters and maintenance personnel,” said Joey Tanner, Fire Chief for Horry County Fire Rescue. “Pierce’s quality and safety technologies are among the reasons we went with them. We obtained the apparatus through FireRescue GPO purchasing cooperative, which enabled us to better evaluate our department’s needs and then determine the manufacturer who can best meet our requirements.” The eight Pierce Enforcer engines each feature seating for five fire-fighters and full height compartments with ladder storage through the body. The upper portion of the vehicles’ passenger side compartments can be converted from standard rescue equipment compartmentation to portable drop tank storage, a versatility that enables urban and rural applications. Each vehicle’s fire-fighting system includes a 1500-GPM single-stage pump, a Husky™ 3 single agent foam system, a 1,000-gallon water tank, and a 22-inch front bumper extension containing 150-feet of 1.75-inch hose. The Ascendant® 107-foot single rear axle aerial ladder is the most popular new aerial apparatus in Pierce’s history. The aerial delivers a full 107-foot vertical reach and a 100-foot horizontal reach with a below grade operation of -10º. Its 100-foot horizontal reach is an astounding 32 feet greater than a typical single rear axle aerial. “We really like the new Ascendant – with its single rear axle, it can manoeuvre into areas where a tandem axle simply can’t go due to size and weight restrictions, and that’s going to be a game changer for our fire-fighters,” added Chief Tanner. “We’re used to having 75-footers in our fleet, and now we’ll have an extra 32 feet of reach for a similar investment. That’s what I call a win-win for everybody.”

Gent by Honeywell introduce new VigInSite tool that separates the old from the new

Gent by Honeywell, the leading manufacturer of innovative life safety solutions, has announced the introduction of VigInSite, a powerful software based tool that can be used to quickly identify the age of the various components of a fire detection system. An industry first, VigInSite helps ensure that safety levels are maximised, while allowing end users to actively schedule and budget for maintenance activities. VigInSite has been developed in direct response to the Fire Industry Association’s (FIA) 2014 Guidance on the Life Expectancy of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems document. It warned that poorly maintained life safety systems that produce regular unwanted alarms can engender a sense of complacency amongst those who they are designed to protect. It also suggested that equipment manufacturers are in the best position to advise on the expected lifetime of the equipment they produce. Gent undertook a comprehensive research programme into the longevity of its products and discovered that the smoke scatter light emitting diodes (LEDs) used in its optical smoke detectors could fall below 70% of their initial light output within 15 years. As this could take a device outside its original calibrated performance parameter and it could therefore potentially become less sensitive. Gent now recommends that these devices should be replaced within 14 years, as part of any planned maintenance schedule. Further component research concluded that Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors should be swapped out within seven years, while other equipment such as control panels, interfaces and other field devices have a realistic lifetime of 20 years. A Gent 24 Approved Systems Integrator can simply plug VigInSite directly into a Vigilon control panel, at which point its advanced software identifies the age of each device. After this process is completed, it formulates an inventory and uses a traffic light system to provide an instant visual guide as to what action should be taken. Green denotes products that are well within their operational lifetimes, amber indicates that replacement is imminent, while red signifies that remedial action should be taken within reasonable timescales. Systems Integrators can send a customer a copy of the document along with a suggested programme of implementation. ‘As a responsible manufacturer, we fully support the FIA’s stance on ensuring that fire detection systems are properly maintained, and that’s why we have developed VigInSite,’ commented Simon Foulkes, Product Manager at Gent. ‘There are many thousands of Gent legacy systems all over the UK and Ireland and some will inevitably contain devices that, due to their age, are no longer fit for purpose. These products can cause higher numbers of unwanted alarms or, more importantly, fail to detect fire in its early stages. VigInSite is already making a valuable contribution to our ongoing efforts to make sure that people, property and assets are adequately protected.’
