Global SuperTanker returns to the United States after concluding deployment in Chile

The Global SuperTanker has been in Chile since January 25th, working with national and local authorities, as well as volunteers, to combat the worst forest fires the country has ever experienced. While in Chile, it set the world record for liquid dropped in a single day by a land-based aerial tanker at 134,400 gallons (508,000 liters), and has been credited with saving lives and property during the two-plus weeks it has been in service. Its initial mission was funded through Fundaciόn Viento Sur of the Walton Family Foundation, and extended by a contribution from the Chile-based Luksic family. Global SuperTanker’s B747-400, The Spirit of John Muir, incorporates a patented system capable of delivering single or multiple payload drops aggregating over 19,000 gallons (72,000 liters) of water, fire retardant, or suppressant. These fluids can be released at variable rates from the plane’s pressurized tanks, producing a tailored response to the firefighting need. This unique ability allows it to make as many as six drops in a single flight, while other aircraft such as the C-130 or BAe-146 must repeatedly land and refuel to achieve the same results. The Spirit of John Muir is the world’s youngest, most modern, and fastest Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT). With a flying speed of 600 miles per hour, the Spirit of John Muir can reach any part of the globe in 20 hours or less. Lake Assault selected by The City of Pittsburgh to protect riverfront resources

Lake Assault Boats, a leading manufacturer of purpose-built and mission-specific fire and rescue boats, has been chosen to construct a 34-foot fireboat by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire in Pittsburgh, Penn. The fireboat will respond to emergencies and help manage fires on waterways, waterfronts, rail lines, and marinas that lie along the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, which join together in Pittsburgh to form the Ohio River. The contract is valued at more than $540,000 (£432,000). The craft will be delivered in summer 2017. “We are thrilled to be appointed by the City of Pittsburgh and its Equipment Leasing Authority to engineer and construct this extremely powerful fireboat to protect resources that lie along the city’s iconic riverfront areas,” said Chad DuMars, Lake Assault Boats Vice President of Operations. “Our team is especially excited to manufacture the first fireboat in its class capable of pumping up to 3,000 gallons of water per minute.” The 34-foot fireboat is a deep V-hull configuration, with an 11-foot overall beam. The boat will be powered by twin Yamaha F300 4.2L V-6 outboard motors, capable of a top speed greater than 40 mph. The firefighting system features a compact Hale 80FC pump flowing up to 3,000 gpm which is powered by a dedicated 6.6L Duramax V-8 diesel engine.  The fire pump includes a 6-inch main discharge that feeds a number of outlets, including bow and stern mounted TFT Hurricane monitors, each capable of flowing 1250 gpm. The 11-foot long pilot master cabin features excellent outward visibility and includes a 15,000 BTU rooftop AC unit, an adjustable (and full suspension) operator’s seat, additional bench seating, SCBA mounting brackets, a chart table with storage, and a cuddy cabin for general storage. The craft also features a full spectrum of Garmin electronics, including chart plotter, HD radar, sonar, and a forward looking infrared (FLIR) system, all controlled through 12- and 16-inch touchscreens. Other notable features include a full complement of LED floodlights and spotlights, a raised engine compartment/work deck, an automatic engine compartment fire suppression system, a hinged radar arch, dive bottle racks, and a removable canvas awning. Once delivered, Lake Assault will provide three days of onsite training with Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire personnel. DuMars added, “Pittsburgh hasn’t had a fireboat in service in more than forty years, and this purchase reflects a major commitment by the city to better protect vital resources that simply can’t be reached by traditional fire-fighting apparatus.”

Xeros introduces first eco-friendly, near waterless laundry system for fire-fighters’ personal protective equipment

Xeros has announced a new NFPA 1851 compliant, polymer cleaning solution for fire-fighters’ personal protective equipment (PPE) that uses 80% less water, 50% less energy and 50% less chemical, and is gentle on fire-fighter ensembles. The Xeros NFPA 1851 compliant polymer laundry system provides a cleaning method that is highly cost-effective, eco-friendly, and gentle on turnout gear thus saving on replacement costs. The system is now available to fire stations, government and military agencies. “We’ve noticed that the quality of our PPE cleaning at our firehouse is remarkably better with the Xeros machines than any of our current commercial washing machines. On top of that, we can now clean up to 18 pieces of outer or inner linings in the Xeros machines, whereas before we could only wash up to 4 pieces of either at a time. This has made washing our PPE after calls much more convenient and efficient for our crews,” said Lieutenant Stephen Horvath of Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue, VA. The Xeros polymer beads replace water as the primary cleaning agent, drastically reducing the amount of water needed, while providing a visibly cleaner result. The beads remain in the machine and can be used for hundreds of washes. At the end of their useful life, the beads are removed and recycled. The molecular structure of the beads attract soil from the gear, producing cleaner results. The Xeros system uses a detergent package that is compliant with the pH requirements of NFPA 1851 and developed to work with low water levels and wash temperatures at or below 105° F as required. Joint conference of EUSAS and Euralarm earlier this year in Berlin to hopefully have a great impact on the future of fire safety

  The joint EUSAS-Euralarm conference took place on February 7-8, at the Berlin offices of Bosch Security Systems. At the crossroads of standardisation and research, the event was the occasion to discover how cutting-edge innovation in the sector of fire safety will drive the development of future standards and make buildings and people safer than they have ever been. The EUSAS-Euralarm conference brought together 60 top specialists in the field of fire safety research, engineering and standardisation, coming from various European countries. Introducing the event were EUSAS Chairman Prof. Dr. Andreas Czylwik, Euralarm President Enzo Peduzzi and, on behalf of the event’s host Bosch, Christoph Hampe. The conference’s programme was divided into four sessions: False alarms, performance and quality testing, evacuation systems and fire safety in smart buildings. Yet unpublished research on false alarms data gathered in Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland and Sweden was presented by Dr. Sebastian Festag from ZVEI, the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, and Lance Rütimann from SES, the Swiss Association of Security Product Manufacturers. Both are Euralarm Delegates in the Task Group False Alarms. They have derived a common approach to an empirical analysis of false alarm data. Wolfgang Krüll from the University of Duisburg-Essen presented reproducible testing procedures for false alarms and three new testing devices which have been developed for those procedures. Statistics from Iceland were presented by Gudmundur Gunnarsson, of MVS Iceland Construction Authority. The problem of testing a safety device’s performance over its whole lifetime was first presented by Thomas Litterst, Hekatron, including a specific testing process he has developed. As demonstrated by Thorsten Schultze, from the University Duisburg-Essen, products currently on the market are largely compliant with current standard’s requirements on age limits and could potentially function correctly well beyond. Raman Chagger from BRE, a research institute specialising in building aspects, also showed that optical smoke detectors developed in the 1980’s function perfectly in modern environments including of plastics and flame retardant foams. Another matter is the mechanism of drift compensation, making up for the aging of a device and the build-up of dirt on sensors, which has the potential to delay the detection of slowly developing fires, according to Florence Daniault, from the Wagner Group. Evacuation systems was the third topic discussed. Dr. Karl Fridolf from WSP, an engineering services group, exposed the theoretical framework of human behaviour in situations of fire, and how behavioural aspects could be better considered in safety design. Video fire detection and its influence on evacuation was presented by Dr. Tjark Windisch from Bosch Security Systems. Dr. Windisch called for greater efforts in standardising video fire detection. The final topic, smart buildings, was first discussed by Mr. Chagger under the perspective of visual alarm devices. He demonstrated how the product standard together with suitable guidelines in a code of practice needs to be based on more solid research. Dr. Peter Harris from United Technologies showed how in smart buildings by favouring interoperability and data sharing could bring about ‘context aware smoke detection’. In a final presentation, Marc Chenevoy, Euralarm presented the difficulties inherent to standardising interoperable systems in smart buildings but reported on positive progress within European standardisation bodies.

Chile's worst wildfires in recent history ravages entire town

The worst forest fire to hit Chile has destroyed an entire town, including buildings, farms and livestock. The fire that powered through Santa Olga — the largest of the many affected communities in Central Chile’s Maule region — destroyed more than 1,000 buildings. Most of the residents of Santa Olga were safely evacuated, one body was recovered from the ruins while two people have been reported missing. “What we have experienced here is literally like Dante’s Inferno,” Carlos Valenzuela, the mayor of the nearby city of Constitución, told the Guardian. “We were recovering after the last earthquake, but this tragedy has messed up everything,” Valenzuela added. Seven people, have died in more than 90 forest fires that have blazed across central and southern Chile in recent weeks, including four firefighters, according to local media. 238,000 hectares of forest has been burnt across the country, the National Forest Corporation said, leading 4000 people to be evacuated. Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet has declared a state of emergency and called for international help to stymie the wildfires. According to the Associated Press, the U.S. has sent a Boeing 747-400 “Super Tanker” help fight the fires. Chile’s Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy said more fires are expected, as more strong winds and hot temperatures have been forecast.

Europe is the world’s top tourist destination but are tourists safe?

Worldwide, touristic travel is on the rise. International tourism actually dwarfs any other type of leisure business in terms of growth and one of the global regions benefitting the most from this trend is Europe: The world’s first tourism destination. Central to the dynamism of European tourism is accommodation: Hotels, B&Bs and online-rented space. But due to a loose legislative framework for safety, which is rapidly becoming obsolete as our habits as tourists evolve, hotels might also become European tourism’s Achilles’ heel. Biggest danger Of all dangers to a tourist’s safety in a European hotel, fire remains the biggest. Currently, the legal basis on the matter is a 1986 EU Council Recommendation on fire safety in hotels. Because EU Recommendations are, by nature, non-binding legal acts, it has resulted in mainly localised and incomplete measures. Fast forward 30 years later and it is clear that the Recommendation has had limited effect on hotel safety in Europe. A fact acknowledged by hotel federations and consumer associations alike. The main issue is that local self-regulation resulting from the Recommendation has not guaranteed an even level of safety across the EU. Enforcement varies considerably from country to country, even city to city, including in the same region, and it largely depends on the size of the hotel. Small hotels are, too often, less scrutinised, more ill-equipped than bigger ones to deal with fires. Local laws frequently link the number of rooms with compliance to the Recommendation. Global trends An analysis of global trends in tourism shows that, as our touristic habits evolve, the risk resulting from the current situation increases: More and more travellers choose to go ‘off the map’ opting for smaller hotels rather than big chains. This new type of tourist also tends to visit exactly those countries where safety in hotels is less controlled. Add to this the relatively unregulated development of increasingly popular online homestay networks, such as Airbnb, and you get a flammable cocktail. The situation seems to be calling for a fast reaction. Resolution The most recent attempt to initiate binding legislation on tourism accommodation safety has been an October 2015 Resolution of the European Parliament, calling for a consistent European approach of risks related to fire. Reactions to the Resolution from various Brussels-based influencers showed a novel situation. All parties involved: Consumer associations, hotel federations and Euralarm, the European trade association representing the electronic fire and security industry, now seem to agree that a legally binding EU Directive would be the right solution to address the issue. Unfortunately, the initiative derailed due to a lack of reliable supporting data: The exact level of risk existing for the flows of tourists travelling to and inside Europe, remains a question mark. Outside from empirical observations, statistics on safety in tourism are notoriously hard to come by, reputational issues coming in the way of self-reporting. An EU Commission-initiated data collection programme launched 2008 resulted in a blatant failure. Industry led survey The focus now is on surveying led by the industry, rather than the EU. Euralarm, among others, has asserted its readiness to help with new data collection efforts. It also offered to provide support and expertise to the EU Institutions and the CEN-CENELEC European standardisation platform, for the development of the relevant legislation and necessary standards to improve fire safety in hotels. Progress in European legislation and standardisation is often slow, unless the issue makes it to news headlines. In 2004, after a number of tunnel fires with casualties, the EU Commission has been forced to publish a Directive on tunnel fire safety. Should we wait any further before adopting a Directive on tourism accommodation safety? Time to act A failure to act quickly could come with yet another cost for Europe. As tourism is now more globalised than ever, competition becomes fiercer, and parts of the world with more stringent and well-established regulations for safety in tourism accommodation might hold a key advantage. In the United States for example, a Hotel and Motel Fire Safety Act is already in place since 1990. In this view, potential future incidents resulting from poor regulation could hit Europe’s tourism industry hard: its reputation as a safe destination already took a blow from the past year’s terrorist attacks. Tourism is one of the engines of the European economy, and an important source of jobs. Eurostat reports that one in ten non-financial enterprises in Europe belongs to the tourism industries, and these 2.2 million enterprises employ an estimated 12 million persons.
