Four people in Dubai have died from fires so far in 2017

Of the 232 fires so far (at time of writing) in Dubai this year, which have caused the death of four people, cigarette butts and faulty electrical outlets have been the main causes, according to officials. Statistics also state that 66 people have been injured solely from inhalation of smoke, while of the 232 fires this year in Dubai, 215 were classified as minor, nine were deemed moderate, and eight were classed as serious. One of the reasons why the number of casualties is so low is that whenever fires have broken out in towers, the alarm systems have worked immediately, which has massively helped in regards to residents being evacuated. Currently, fire officials are trying to devise a plan which will prevent fires occurrent in villas, which include nanotechnology and adding safety systems. The Dubai Civil Defence statistics showed that most of these fires took place in the Al Karama area this year, and that the average response time to fires from officials was nine minutes.

Pall of smoke cast as dozens of forest fires burn in Oregon

The vast majority of Oregon was wrapped in a haze of smoke on the 4th September, with dozens of wildfires attacking the state to the point that ones specific fire forced part of an interstate highway to be closed. The Willamette National Forest alone currently has 16 fires, covering 71 square miles (184 square kilometres) burning, while campfires have subsequently been banned while a third of the forest is off limits to the general public. Meanwhile, evacuations were ordered in a rural area near Cave Junction, southwest Oregon, due to another blaze. At time of writing, the magnitude and size of this fire remains unknown as heavy smoke has ensured that the infrared mapping flights don’t work. However, the smoke is also filtering sunlight, which is limiting any additional heating of potential fuels on the ground, which in turn is actually stifling smaller fires. Doctors have recommended that anyone with any existing pulmonary conditions – for example, asthma – should stay indoors, while air quality alerts have also been issued for various parts of the state. Towards the northern end of the state, one fire in particular has wreaked havoc, with a blaze near the Columbia River Gorge – which separates Oregon from the state of Washington – causing ashes to drift over into the town of Cascade Locks. As well as this, a stretch of Interstate 84 which runs by the town has been closed due to the blaze, and the highway will only reopen once the authorities have deemed that the road is safe. Evacuation orders remain in place in and around Cascade Locks for a whopping 283 structures, which include 15 businesses. The fire started on the 2nd September, allegedly from a youngster playing with fireworks, and quickly spread to the point it’s holding its position at an estimated 3200 acres (1295 hectares).

Firefighters of New York town Gerry host mock disaster drill to great effect

On the 19th August, five area volunteer fire departments – along with the Chautaqua County Office of Emergency Services and the Starflight helicopter – joined forces to stage a mock disaster drill which revolved around a fictional collapse of the bleachers located at the Gerry rodeo grounds. Around 50 EMS and fire department volunteers from Gerry, Falconer, Sinclairville and Fluvanna turned up within minutes of being notified with over a dozen emergency vehicles – which included an ambulance from each department which were required to treat 20 ‘victims’, with injuries ranging from fatalities to cuts and bruises to broken bones. The ‘victims’ in question were members of the Jamestown Civil Air Patrol mixed with several community volunteers, and their fake injures appeared lifelike thanks to sublime make-up work headed by Laura Logan, who is the EMS captain for the Cassadaga Fire Department, and Roberta Edwards, who works with the Panama Fire Department. The injuries were given priority dependent on their severity, and one ‘victim’, who had been trapped under debris, was flown out by the Starlight helicopter, while those who needed hospital treatment were subsequently loaded into ambulances. After the drill was completed, the volunteers all met in the pavilion on the rodeo grounds for an evaluation by Chautauqua County EMS Coordinator Steve Cobbs and Kevin Peebles, who is project coordinator for the County EMS. EMS captain from the Gerry Fire Department Bob Rein developed the event, and claimed that the drill was very successful as it suggests that should a major disaster take place in Gerry, the services have proved that they can react accordingly. Rein was assisted in the planned by EMS captains Chris Roll, Jodi Shaw, Dan Braggs, Lee Purdue and Jessica Fosberg. As well as this, Krista Swanson – chief flight nurse for Starflight – and Scott Bailey – Third Battalion Fire Coordinator – were singled out for praise for their efforts.
