Queens Cross Housing Association to install 12,000 FireAngel alarms

Queens Cross Housing Association to install 12,000 FireAngel alarms Smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarm suppliers, FireAngel, has signed a contract to supply Glasgow-based Queens Cross Housing Association with over 12,000 battery powered smoke and heat alarms. The WST630 smoke alarms and WHT630 heat alarms will be installed in over 3,500 properties across the city centre, due to the Scottish Government’s pending legislative changes following the Grenfell fire tragedy. Under these changes to the Housing (Scotland) Act 2018, all homes will require sealed long-life battery or mains wired alarms. They should be interlinked with one functioning smoke alarm in the most frequently used room, one functioning smoke alarm in every circulation space on each floor, such as hallways and landings and one heat alarm in every kitchen. A carbon monoxide alarm will also need to be fitted in each room with a carbon-fuelled appliance or flue. The Wi-Safe 2 wireless interlink alarms from FireAngel were chosen to ensure each property achieves constant compliance through the use of interlinked alarms installed in the kitchen, hallway and living room. They were also chosen for the utilisation of FireAngel’s unique Thermoptek Multi-Sensor technology. Jim Williams, Maintenance Manager at Queens Cross Housing Association, said, “we’ve used FireAngel’s carbon monoxide alarms in the past, so we know the quality and durability of the brand well. Following the government’s legislative updates, it’s vital that we ensure we’re providing every single tenant with the highest level of protection, which we can easily achieve with FireAngel’s range of interlinked alarms”. Over an 18-month period the alarms will be installed by Queens Cross Housing Association’s maintenance team, with FireAngel’s W2-CO-1OX carbon monoxide alarms also being installed in properties where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance or flue present. Graham Whitworth, Executive Chairman of FireAngel, commented, “we are delighted to be providing Queens Cross Housing Association with our range of interlinked alarms. It is crucial that all Scottish housing associations are taking a proactive approach to the new legislative changes and our Wi-Safe 2 alarms help them do just that as they are designed to provide the highest level of protection at all times”. www.fireangel.co.uk.

Ash Babb and Andrew Heywood will undertake audits on Checkmate’s Passive Fire Protection, Fire Door, Intumescent Paint and Fire-Resistant Glazing installations and repairs, over and above the inspections carried out for third-party accreditation. The appointments will help Checkmate’s installation teams achieve outstanding levels of fire integrity in the buildings they work on, creating safer environments for the people who live and work in them, protecting the businesses and public services that run them against the potentially devastating effects of a fire. Babb joins Checkmate from the accredited certification body, Exova BM TRADA, where he worked as a Lead Technical Officer, developing an in-depth knowledge of fire resistance testing and related standards. Heywood has an extensive background in fire safety, having served in the Fire Service for 30 years, the final nine of which were as a Fire Protection Officer assessing legal compliance in regulated premises. The pair joins the in-house Technical and Compliance team headed by Damien Ward, who moved to Checkmate after spending almost a decade as Senior Certification Manager for the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Ward commented: “Everyone at Checkmate understands the importance of our work in protecting lives and livelihoods and we have developed a culture in which achieving the best possible standards is now regarded as the norm. “However, we also believe in continuous improvement and are happy to invest in order to drive up standards, which is what Andrew and Ash will help us to do. “With the appointments of these two experts to undertake audits of our own work, we have become the only supplier in our industry to provide customers with the double protection of third-party accreditation and additional high-level inspections. “That means Checkmate’s customers will benefit from excellent levels of fire integrity in their buildings, which is great news for residents, workers, building owners and insurers.” www.checkmatefire.com

Kentec fire panel and suppression system protects new recycling plant

Kentec fire panel and suppression system protects new recycling plant Kentec’s Syncro AS fire alarm panel and Sigma XT Fire suppression system have been chosen by East Coast Fire & Security and Fire Shield Systems for a collaborative project to install a fire protection system at Grundon Waste Management’s new Bulk Recycling Centre in Banbury. East Coast Fire & Security was employed to design, supply, install and commission an addressable fire alarm system that integrates with the new fire suppression system. Two Syncro AS single-loop fire panels were specified and installed 165 metres apart. They were linked together using a network card and two 2 –core 1.5mm fire resistant FP cables, providing complete control from either panel on all devices, even on opposite sides of the plant. East Coast Fire & Security linked the Fire alarm system to an alarm receiving centre (ARC), for 24/7 monitoring of the entire site. It also provided and installed the status unit cables, containment, along with addressable Sounder / Beacons, IP-rated manual call points (MCPs) in the main recycling unit, detection and manual call points in both plant rooms and devices in the Weighbridge including the installation of the status units. Simon Hubbard, Director, East Coast Fire & Security, says Kentec’s systems were an obvious choice: “Not only do we know the systems to be reliable, have excellent networking capability and powerful cause and effects software, but also Kentec offers exceptional levels of technical support to both customers and engineers. Its partnership approach on this project was invaluable to its success.” Syncro AS is a multi-protocol panel, providing maximum choice in system design. It can be used to network up to 64 panels, meaning a system can be expanded as and when required. The Sigma XT suppression system comes with three detection zones as standard, meaning extinguishant release can be configured to activate from any combination of detection zone inputs. Kevin Swann, Managing Director at Kentec, says the project is an excellent example of collaborative working: “East Coast Fire & Security and Fire Shield Systems have designed a system that provides the utmost in fire protection – particularly impressive was the installation of a total of ten cables that enable all systems to work in unison,” he says. “The project provides a blueprint for how installers and manufacturers can work together for the benefit of our clients’ fire safety.” Grundon is the UK’s largest family-owned supplier of integrated waste management and environmental services. Operating from depots across the South of England it works in partnership with customers to help minimise the financial and environmental impacts of waste. The Bulk Recycling Centre at Banbury is a key facility accepting a range of materials from local businesses around Banbury. Grundon worked closely with Fire Shield Systems and East Coast Fire & Security to ensure the requirements of the Environment Agency Fire Prevention Plan were met appropriately.

Draka extends Firetuf cable series for wider use

Draka extends Firetuf cable series for wider use Draka’s Firetuf cable series for the cabling of tunnel systems has grown with the launch of the new Firetuf OFC-LT-SWA fire resistant loose tube cable with steel wire armour. Designed for harsh environments and to ensure the fail-safe management of operational systems in tunnels, underground railways and alarm systems, the cable is ideal for heavy-duty applications due to its high mechanical strength and pulling tension. The loose tube cable offers 90 minutes fire resistance due to its innovative design with double Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) sheathing in accordance with IEC standard 60331-25, increasing the number of fibres per cable from 12 to 144. The new Firetuf OFC-ST-SWA is the latest addition to Draka’s portfolio of loose tube cables, which includes the non-metallic Firetuf OFC-LT-NM and corrugated steel tape armoured Firetuf OFC-LT-CST – all three cables are unique to the market and have been thoroughly tested and approved. Draka also offers the Firetuf OFC-UT-NM (non-metallic) and Firetuf OFC-UT-CST (steel tape armoured) central tube cables, which have a fire resistance even longer than their loose tube variants. Tayfun Eren, Product Manager at Draka, Prysmian Group, commented: “The number of tunnels and subways are increasing from year to year in a bid to better manage our traffic infrastructure. However, this can create challenges when it comes to emergency situations such as accidents or fires, making safety the central issue in the planning and construction of tunnels. “The operational systems for tunnel management must be fail-safe around the clock, which requires safe and reliable cabling. Our high-quality Firetuf cable series has been optimised for application in tunnel operations and can guarantee a highly available cable infrastructure.” https://uk.prysmiangroup.com
