Kentec protects China to Yorkshire Power Station project

Kentec protects China to Yorkshire Power Station project A Sigma XT extinguishing panel and accessories manufactured by Kentec, a life safety control systems manufacturer, are protecting a power storage station built in Hefei in China and brought over to Yorkshire, in Northern England. Guangzhou Wanzhen Information Technology Co. Ltd completed the installation and commissioning of the project for Sungrow Power in Hefei earlier this year, after which it was transported to Yorkshire, where the storage container was fixed to the site. The storage station forms part of Sungrow’s Photovoltaic solar energy project. From construction to completion, the project was completed in just four months, with the methodology now being used as a blue-print across the power construction industry. The installation included a Sigma XT Extinguishant panel, status unit, abort switch and warning signs. A spokesperson for Guangzhou Wanzhen Information Technology Co. Ltd says the Sigma range is ideal for high risk sites such as power stations: “Kentec’s Sigma range is highly reliable and renowned throughout the industry for its robust build quality. We were therefore very happy to specify the system for this critical project.” Three initiation circuits are included as standard with the Sigma XT releasing panel. This means release can be configured to activate from any combination of detection zone inputs to enable specific and controlled activations, thus protecting a site’s critical equipment from unnecessary extinguishant release damage. Kevin Swann, Managing Director of Kentec, says the Sigma XT has been built with the end user and installer in mind: “A large LED display provides a highly-intuitive interface for end users to configure systems to suit their specific sites,” he explains. “And with all the electronics mounted on a single, easily removable steel plate, the panels are both robust and easy to install.” The LED display informs on the time remaining until release for added user safety. This countdown timer can be duplicated on up to seven status units per panel, to provide localised indication of system status. Any number of abort switches can be connected to the abort terminal, providing complete convenience of system design. The Sigma XT has been approved and certified to EN12094-1, EN54-2 and EN54-4, with UL and FM versions also available.

The ceremony which was hosted by Messe Frankfurt Middle East, the organisers of Intersec – was held at Dubai’s Habtoor Palace Ballroom and saw more than 250 guests attend. The awards saw 130 entrants across nine categories, with entries received from companies across the globe, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Mozambique, Germany, Canada and Singapore. Simon Mellor, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: “The Intersec Security, Safety & Fire Protection Awards are a celebration of innovation, excellence, perseverance, teamwork, and of the dedication by the entire commercial security and fire protection community that continuously keep our societies safe and secure.” Spread across five security and four fire categories, entries went through a rigorous judging process which took place over two days and required shortlisted nominees to present their projects and products and attend a question and answer interview in front of an independent panel. The panel of judges including industry leaders and experts from companies such as Khalifa University, the Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA), Dubai Civil Defence and EMAAR. EJADAH was the only company to win across two categories on the night, walking away with the ‘Security Project of the Year’ and ‘Innovative Security Product of the Year’ awards.  The UAE-based provider of community solutions for real estate assets was awarded for its work on upgrading the CCTVs across Jumeirah Beach Residences and their Security Robotic Service, respectively. Zainab Al Rahma, Marketing and Communications Manager for EJADAH, said: “Our robots will now offer the security industry and our customers the opportunity to purchase or rent assets that will enhance and improve the standard and quality of security services provided. “They are an excellent example of utilising the latest technology that can be easily integrated into any existing security systems. Once integrated these products will certainly compliment any of our customers’ security plans for their developments.” Engineering firm WSP added to its two award wins from 2018, taking home the ‘Fire Project of the Year’ award for its work on The Wharf in Bluewaters Island. Alexander Castellanos, a consultant from WSP, said: “This project is a change from the super and mega high rises and posed unique fire and life safety strategy elements which had to be considered. “With the project being focused on delivering a pedestrian experience and its low-rise nature, the fire strategy took advantage of this design element in order to address life safety elements such as fire service access, phased evacuation, and evacuation discharge as an integral part of the design and allowing for efficiencies while maintaining a high standard of safety.” In addition to returning award categories, the ceremony saw the introduction of new categories such as the ‘Humanitarian Project Award’, won by Sicuro Group for their Mozambique Crisis Response & Operation Strategy. Provider of security management systems, Maxxess, took home another of the newly introduced award categories, the ‘System Integrator of the Year’, for its work on Bluewaters Island. “The eFusion security management platform was chosen by Bluewaters, and it uses versatile, open-technology software without the need for complex or bespoke integration,” said Lee Copland, Managing Director EMEA, Maxxess. “This project benefited from the cost advantage of a modular, building block approach that gives maximum freedom to integrate, customise and adapt security systems to meet both current needs and emerging risks. “The reduced costs therefore apply not just to the present implementation, but also to future adaptations which will also be achieved much more easily. “Off-the-shelf, plug-and-play integration is much less expensive than a customized solution, and eFusion already integrates with more than 60 leading security technologies, with more being added continuously.” The 22nd edition of Intersec will take place from 19-21 January 2020 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, featuring more than 1,300 exhibitors from 59 countries, covering the seven key show sections of Commercial Security, Fire & Rescue, Homeland Security & Policing, Physical & Perimeter Security, Safety & Health, Cyber Security, and Smart Home & building Automation. Change is the new normalcy – AFAC19 in full swing in Melbourne

Change is the new normalcy – AFAC19 in full swing in Melbourne AFAC19 powered by INTERSCHUTZ is the biggest-ever edition of the event. This is due in part to the first-time inclusion of the national conference of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) in the AFAC program, which also includes the Australian Disaster Resilience Conference. The high-calibre Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC Research Forum will once again cover all the latest research findings on natural catastrophes and resilience, while a German group pavilion with 11 companies will also be making an appearance at AFAC19. A further highlight includes a talk by the President of the German Fire Service Association (DFV), Hartmut Ziebs – the first time a German speaker has been featured in the AFAC conference program – speaking on the topic “How does the German fire brigade system work?” This year’s lead theme at AFAC19 is “A shift to the new norm: riding the wave of change”, involving the need for emergency services to adapt to a new age in which substantial transformation becomes the normal state of affairs. This includes better preparation for emergencies, greater resilience in society and increased capacity to recover more quickly from crises. “This year we are dealing with some major issues that affect us all: growth, climate change and technological progress,” says Stuart Ellis, AFAC CEO. “But we are also facing the challenge of promoting greater diversity and integration to better reflect the communities we serve,” he adds. AFAC19 brings together the fire and rescue services of Australia as well as companies and organizations from abroad to discuss the latest issues. A total of nearly 200 companies will be showcasing their newest products and services on 12,000 square meters of exhibition space. The following companies will be exhibiting at the German group pavilion: ALRO Engineering, askö, Crystop, Haix Group, Luitpold Schott Amaturenfabrik, s.tec Germany, Schmitz One Seven, Securemen, Skylotec, Stumpf & Kossendey Verlagsgesellschaft and the Wagner Group. Promat SYSTEMGLAS mark 30 years in the fire industry

Promat SYSTEMGLAS mark 30 years in the fire industry This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first UK installations of SYSTEMGLAS, the complete fire rated glazing system from Promat UK, and demand is stronger than ever. The 30-year milestone is proving to be an important factor behind the increasing interest in SYSTEMGLAS from architects, specifiers, interior designers, clients and contractors who are seeking assured passive fire protection in their glazing, partitioning and building interiors. The market-leading system, which is supported by Promat UK’s ‘360° Wheel of Assurance’ encompassing full control and traceability through design, manufacture, installation and completion inspection, is suitable for a wide range of applications including offices, residential, retail spaces, public buildings and transport interchanges. Providing integrity and insulation (EI) protection from EI30 to EI120, SYSTEMGLAS has now been used in a vast number of projects in the UK and Ireland since 1989. Ian Cowley, Regional Director (UK and Scandinavia) at Promat says: “With three decades behind it, SYSTEMGLAS has proved itself in the market as a trusted solution for passive fire protection. In an era when supply chain traceability has risen up the agenda in specification decisions, the range is today offering an important differentiator, particularly now that the SYSTEMGLAS framing options have been expanded to cover steel, timber and PROMATECT H for concealing, painting or over-cladding. “When it comes to developing a fire rated glazing specification, all the components must work together to achieve the required performance level, which is what underpins our ‘Specified for a Reason’ campaign. SYSTEMGLAS takes away any supply chain ambiguity, specification misinterpretation or risk of product substitution as we have complete oversight from start to finish.” SYSTEMGLAS is suitable for all building applications with fire ratings of between 30 and 120 minutes. Promat’s technical experts provide guidance on the right approach at the design and specification stage and the system is manufactured in-house to ensure all cutting and processing is completed to the correct standard. Promat’s fire protection specialists then inspect SYSTEMGLAS on completion to ensure it has been installed in accordance with its recommendations and provides a certificate of conformity for installation.

Hip-hop festival in Croatia forced to be evacuated following huge forest fire

Hip-hop festival in Croatia forced to be evacuated following huge forest fire Fresh Island Festival in Croatia was put on hold after it had to be evacuated following a forest fire breaking out near the venue. The festival – which specialises in hip-hop and R&B and had Tyga, Torey Lanez and Stefflon Don pencilled in to perform – was thrown into disarray on July 15 when the nearby forest to the venue went up in flames. Initially, festivalgoers were evacuated via a number of shuttle buses that were leaving from another venue in the shape of Noa Club towards the town of Novalja, but according to attendees on social media, local police shut the road to Novalja, causing panic. Making a statement on the event, the festival organisers offered some advice on the situation and tried to encourage a sense of calm at a difficult time. “We advise everyone to remain close to Noa Club main road entrance and not to attempt to make their way back to the town until the emergency services have provided further information on the situation,” the statement read. “Once again we really appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.” The description of the fires seemed more than a cause for concern, with festival attendee Jess Storey claiming to Mirror Online that the wind helped carry the flames along. “The flames were at times double the height of the trees and the smoke cloud grew very quickly also,” Storey said. “The fire appeared to be spreading rapidly across the forest over the bay due to the high winds.”
