What was the inspiration behind starting your company? Our founder was a member of the local volunteer fire department and was occasionally asked to use his machine shop to create custom equipment brackets for the trucks. Other departments saw these brackets and asked for some of their own. The business grew from there. Ziamatic Corp. Education, training and best practice Katherine Adrian, President, the Fire Suppression Systems Association (FSSA) discusses the marketplace, best practice, recruitment and virtual training For this edition of International Fire Buyer, Editor Rebecca Spayne sits down virtually with Katherine Adrian, President of the fire Suppression Systems Association (FSSA) to discuss how Covid-19 has impacted the fire suppression industry and discover how important it is to continue to recruit for the next generation of fire industry members even during uncertain times. The Fire Suppression Systems Association (FSSA) is a not-for-profit trade association, drawing members domestic and internationally and is comprised of a blend of designer/installers, manufacturers, consultants, academics and suppliers working together to share ideas and strategies for the benefit of the fire suppression systems industry. FSSA members are dedicated to the highest level of safety, reliability and effectiveness of special hazards fire suppression. Could you explain a bit about what your organisation does? The Fire Suppression Systems Association (FSSA) is the premier association for special hazard learning and fire protection networking. Our organisation attracts the top installers, manufacturers, suppliers and consultants in the industry, who converge once a year for our Annual Forum. However, throughout the year, our members are in constant communication, whether it is for the association or working outside on a project which FSSA brought them together on. Additionally, FSSA participates on other committees that are involved with creating industry standards, as well as promoting the overall fire suppression industry. How important is it to educate the special hazard fire protection industry? The “special hazard” portion of fire protection is a niche area, but an extremely important part of fire protection. Part of FSSA’s mission is to educate and we do so by offering technical guides for purchase. Another one of the resources that our volunteers created many years ago was the online training program, which offers that important industry education. With the rise of virtual training and online learning, how easy has it been to train members on fire suppression systems? While our in-person Annual Forum had to be cancelled, that did not stop the association from moving to a virtual event. So, the only thing that’s been difficult is not being able to be together in-person! FSSA has always offered a fully online training program, both for members and non-members. The courses are based on best practices within the industry, procedures and feature many of our members products as examples for learning. The program is available at the student’s own pace and features over 35 classes that cover basic training to advanced cylinder handling and special hazard systems drawings. The recruitment of young people is important for the industry, how does your Education Foundation help inspire the next generation? The FSSA Educational Foundation is, in some people’s opinion, one of the most important parts of our association, and when you think about it, the students are the future of any industry. To support our students, FSSA offers a scholarship to those studying fire protection every single year and we encourage all those interested to apply. For the recipients, they are invited to meet our board of directors and other leadership. This year, FSSA also created a new Student membership, available to full-time students to participate in our association and be able to network, and hopefully find their first job out of college. In addition, our members have a great relationship with most colleges that they’re able to give a lecture each semester about the special hazard fire protection industry. Where do you see the fire suppression industry heading? The fire suppression industry is heading into a time where having connected fire suppression systems and being able to monitor those systems remotely will be of importance as more sophisticated technologies such as smart buildings and smart cities enter the markets. In addition, Energy Storage Systems (ESS) still are a major challenge for this industry and will continue to be a key topic of discussion. What do members gain from the association? Some of the member benefits include access to our Annual Forum event, discounts on publications and training programs, early access to industry information in the Annunciator e-newsletter, networking with some of the brightest industry professionals, and the ability to help create industry standards in the US. We are excited this year to have formed a new Global Outreach Committee that will aid in us building relationships with other leading fire protection associations and strengthen not only our organisation’s value to our members but to the fire protection industry as a whole. Our members are considered leaders in the industry and the networking that each person receives is invaluable. What PFAS are in your fire suppression system?

Exclusive for Fire Buyer Dr. Ian Ross, Technical Director and Global PFAS Practice Lead at Tetra Tech discusses PFAS in fire suppressions systems. Increasing attention to the environmental and human health effects of fluorosurfactants present in C8 (long chain) and C6 (short chain) firefighting foams, termed per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), is leading to the development of increasingly conservative (low) regulatory levels in drinking water globally. The ongoing use of firefighting foams containing C8 and C6 fluorosurfactants, termed aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) and fluoroprotein foams (FFFP and FP) is under significant scrutiny as numerous drinking water supplies are identified to be contaminated by PFAS, with 6 million Americans impacted in 2016. PFAS are all extremely persistent in the environment, so have been termed “forever chemicals” and are the subject of a recent Hollywood film called ‘Dark Waters’. There are a growing number of lawsuits are being filed against polluters by communities and businesses impacted by PFAS contamination. For instance, some $212M was recently paid to a PFAS-impacted community in Australia, located along a 9-mile PFAS groundwater plume, caused by use of firefighting foams, which impacted the drinking water supply to the town of Katherine. Following publication of the new, significantly lower, UK drinking water standards for PFAS earlier this year, in addition to a ban of training and testing using C8 foams in Europe from 2020 do many organisations know which PFASs are contained within their fire suppression systems or understand the implications of holding these foams? A snapshot of the PFAS issues facing the firefighting industry Over the last two decades there has been a migration away from C8 firefighting foams that contained PFOS (perfluorooctane sulphonate), but foams containing PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and its precursors continue to be sold, albeit with progressively lower concentrations of these C8 PFAS. The reality, however, is that C6 foams contain fluorotelomer PFAS which are precursors to an array of bioaccumulative intermediates and extremely persistent terminal products, with less understood regarding their toxicology. Hence why in 2019 the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) proposed a restriction that will prevent the use of C6 foams. With an increase in environmental regulation of short chain PFAS, this has led many foam users to transition to using fluorine free firefighting (F3) foams. The extinguishment performance of these F3 foams being proven in multiple sized tests since 2002. Given the continued use of PFAS-containing foams seems likely incur significant environmental liabilities for the end user, switching to F3 foams is a wise decision. Keep one step ahead of the regulation Regulations commencing in July 2021, stipulate that holding over 50 litres of PFAS-containing firefighting foams can represent a notifiable stockpile of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The nature and volume of foam held is required to be reported to the Environment Agency annually. Establishing the nature of each foam and whether it exceeds the criteria that determine whether it represents a notifiable stockpile requires chemical analysis of PFAS present in each foam. For example, determining whether a C6 foam stock comprises a notifiable stockpile of POPs would require chemical analysis to determine whether select PFAS exceed low regulatory thresholds. PFOA and its precursors, which are subject to the current stockpile regulations, are present at low levels in C6-foams currently being sold. When firefighting foams are replaced in suppression systems, a significant mass of C8 or C6 PFAS adhering to interior surfaces of these systems, in the form of layers, dissolves into the new foams. This means the replacement foams are likely to comprise a notifiable stockpile as a result of increases in their C8 content, as result of unsuccessful decontamination of fire suppression systems. Even some F3 foams have been determined to contain up to 1.6g/L PFAS, after suppression system decontamination using water flushing, with it being common that effective decontamination is not performed between foam changeouts. Solutions to keep ahead of the curve The chemical analysis required to determine whether a foam comprises a notifiable stockpile is termed the total oxidiseable precursor (TOP) assay, with published guidance on use and interpretation of this technique being essential to its application. Decontamination of fire suppression systems requires specialist cleaning agents to remove layers of self-assembled PFAS from the interior of fire suppression systems. These layers are water resistant, so flushing systems with water is ineffective. When considering replacement of firefighting foams, dispensed fluorinated foams and foam concentrates cannot be treated using biological wastewater treatment plants, so AFFF, FP and FFFP should not be disposed of to any foul sewer. There are also increasing concerns that incineration of firefighting foam concentrates does not destroy PFASs, with litigation progressing in the U.S. claiming that PFAS in liquid wastes do not readily burn and are not destroyed under typical incineration conditions. As transitioning to adopt F3 foams is becoming more common and environmental regulations tighten around PFAS in firefighting foams Tetra Tech has formulated a team of environmental and fire engineers to provide a series of services which deliver foam transition as a package. The team comprises PFAS experts to ensure regulatory compliance and effective decontamination, with seasoned fire engineers who can assist with any suppression system modification and ensure that insurers are comfortable with fire suppression systems adapted to use F3 foams.  The team has access to technologies proven to destroy PFAS in liquid wastes and decontamination agents so can assist with the complexities of foam changeouts and regulatory compliance. The bigger picture When considering a portfolio of sites, where firefighting foams are stored in suppression systems at multiple locations, a review to establish the environmental sensitivity of each site can be useful to risk rank sites and determine their potential to impact drinking or surface waters, if a foam loss occurred. This can assist with prioritising managing environmental risks as foam changeouts affecting the firefighting industry are planned. There are many challenges to consider regarding PFAS and finding an experienced team will be essential for successful management of the business risks these persistent pollutants pose.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure has updated its Desigo CC smart building management platform to version V5.0, which marks the software’s opening for more systems and devices. The platform now offers improved connectivity and support for more integrations, such as EV charging stations. In addition, it provides new functions for easier and more flexible usability. Desigo CC V5.0 further strengthens the level of cybersecurity protection and enables a wide variety of buildings to become future-proof and easy to manage. Enhanced building management Desigo CC V5.0 is now linked to the infrastructure around the building. For the first time, it offers the ability to monitor the energy consumption of electric vehicles, thanks to EV charging station integration via the OCPP protocol. In a user-friendly manner, Desigo CC represents the status information of the e-charging stations and provides dedicated graphic symbols for an easy visualization. Additionally, Desigo CC extends its cloud connectivity with direct access from the Siemens cloud application Building Operator through a secure internet tunnel to start the local Desigo CC Flex Client for advanced operation. With this easy cloud connection, operators can access their Desigo CC without the need for a VPN connection, anytime and from anywhere, allowing them to reduce their on-site presence. User experience as key element Flex Client is the new HTML5 front-end of Desigo CC that can run on any operating system and web browser supporting HTML5 technology, and also mobile devices such as tablets – all without requiring installation steps. Flex Client has been designed to drastically improve the user experience and to make the monitoring of any building an easy task. With V5.0, Flex Client has been improved and now provides easier event handling, a sophisticated trending application and easy access to building schedules. Security in mind To protect vulnerable building data even better, Desigo CC V5.0 is now IEC62443-3-3 SL2 compliant. Extensions and subsystem integrations have been extensively evaluated and tested to be listed as SL2 compliant, allowing Desigo CC to be used in deployments with higher security demands. With V5.0, new multifactor authentication and improved sign-on were implemented to simplify multi-user operation. Desigo CC is constantly tested and protected with frequent releases of patches, hot fixes and updates. Customers can benefit from this continuous updating process by subscribing to the Desigo CC Software Upgrade Program to receive the latest packages as they come. Improved operational efficiency Since the amount of KNX devices in buildings is increasing, Desigo CC supports them too. V5.0 allows the integration of additional KNX devices such as Tunable White DALI gateways. Global Fire Equipment (GFE) awarded EN 54-13 2017/2019 approval

Global Fire Equipment (GFE), has been awarded EN 54-13:2017+A1:2019 system compatibility approval, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to offering its customers best-in-class fire detection and alarm solutions. An international third-party accredited laboratory awarded GFE the EN 54-13:2017+A1:2019 approval for its entry level and high-end addressable fire detection and alarm systems. EN 54-13:2017+A1:2019 is one of 23 standards for fire detection and alarm (product) systems (FDASs) in the EN54 series of standards. The European standards define the requirements, test methods and performance criteria required by various individual components making up FDAS. EN 54-13 differs from the other standards because it is a system performance standard rather than a product standard.  It is a particularly important standard as it confirms the compatibility and connectivity of all the individual components of a FDAS to work together. EN54-13 was first published in 2005 and has since been adapted with a number of technical revisions. As such, the 2005 edition is recognised as being outdated and will soon become obsolete. Boson Radiometric Cameras Bring Absolute Temperature Measurement Capabilities for Quantitative Assessment and Analysis Across Commercial and Industrial Uses The Boson camera core represents the best in FLIR high-performance uncooled thermal imaging technology within a small, lightweight, and low-power package, and now FLIR partners and customers will have the option to purchase radiometric versions that can capture the temperature data of every pixel in the scene. Assessing Temperature Accuracy with FLIR “Spot Meter Accuracy” Featuring radiometric accuracy provides ±5 °C (±8 °F) or ±5% temperature measurement accuracy, the Boson Radiometric cameras include a Spot Meter Accuracy software feature that provides an assessment of how accurate a given temperature measurement appears in the scene. Available as telemetry data accessed through the Boson SDK or the Boson graphical user interface (GUI), this feature provides guidance across five confidence grades offering in-the-moment assessment to help improve temperature measurement confidence. In addition, the Spot Meter Accuracy software feature gives operators the ability to account for dynamic ambient temperatures, along with the ability to configure measurements prior to operation, including adjusting emissivity and thermal gain settings. These functions are crucial for outdoor environments and the swift movements of unmanned aerial drones and automated ground vehicles. 53% of fire safety professionals have seen an increase in fire door wedging

Results from a survey conducted by a manufacturer of fire safety technology, Geofire, found that 53% of fire safety professionals have seen an increase in fire doors being wedged open since the start of the pandemic The survey, which was completed to gain an insight into how COVID-19 has impacted the fire safety industry over the last 12 months, highlighted key themes such as the impact of financial pressure following the pandemic. 84% of the respondents identified that financial pressure has made businesses less likely to carry out fire safety maintenance and improvements. One Health and Safety Advisor, said: “Fire will not stop for COVID-19, employers still have an obligation to keep people and premises fire safe”. Over the last 12 months, the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the world with the necessary, but disruptive nature of lock-downs and restrictions impacting day to day business across the UK. Despite the turbulent year, the risk a fire poses to life and property remains unchanged. Geofire warns that businesses must continue to ensure that their fire safety is not only compliant, but adapted to facilitate the added challenge of the on-going pandemic. The report highlights that fire safety professionals believe there is a lack of awareness in businesses around the importance of fire safety, with 37% stating that infection control measures have had a negative impact. Andy Collinson, CEO at Geofire, said: “As the manufacturer of fire safety products, including fire door holders and closers, we wanted to conduct this survey to learn from others in the industry and raise awareness of the importance of ensuring fire safety compliance. This is even more important as restrictions ease and businesses and buildings across the UK begin to reopen, some for the first time in over a year”. The survey was based on responses from a range of people working within the industry, such as; Fire Risk Assessors, Fire Door Auditors, H&S Advisors and Fire Safety Consultants. We recognise how stressful this particular situation is for all industries, especially the events business. Even with postponements and cancellations happening, the topic discussions, networking and demonstration abilities that happen with events are a necessity for the industry and must continue, whether this is virtual or postponed. We recognise the challenges that the event community is facing during a time when our industry is being deeply affected, therefore wish to show some recognition for the international events that would have been taking place or reviewed during this issue. The global coronavirus pandemic is having a huge impact on the live events industry. This disruption is something that many event creators worldwide are currently navigating.  Instead of cancelling an event, more and more organisers are deciding to postpone instead. Not only will making this decision help you stay on course, it’ll ensure you have time to evaluate and plan an even better experience in the near future. Here are a few simple pointers for postponing an event while managing expectations, as well as keeping your guests informed and engaged. Online events or webinars During this pandemic the world has witnessed a digital shift. Companies are creating remote working plans, the fire industry is developing safety procedures for training and other activities, and technology is thriving with live streams, virtual events, demonstration videos and more. As anyone in the event industry knows, no amount of planning can predict the weather, a venue or exhibitor cancellation, or – as we’re currently dealing with – a global pandemic. When unexpected setbacks derail your event, a contingency plan will help you decide your next move. But what if you don’t have one? The bottom line is, despite your expertise and experience, adaptability is still the most beneficial skill you need as an event professional. And with a variety of digital formatting options available, you can more seamlessly pivot to meet any given challenge. This is evident with companies embracing technology and providing support for their customers as acknowledged in this issue from market leading companies such as LUKAS Hydraulik, or international events organisers such as Hannover Fairs Autralia.  Some call it a livestream, others call it a webinar or virtual summit. All that matters is that your attendees’ expectations are satisfied – or, better yet, exceeded. As well as giving you the ability to salvage your event in the face of changing circumstances, there are other benefits to using an online format. You can: Open up your event to more people. Save on costs like travel, vendors and venues. Leverage social tools and chats to keep the conversation going. Elodie Gerard, Marketing Director at Hannover Fairs Australia exclusively talks to International Fire Buyer about the 2020 struggles and what the company has been doing in the meantime before AFAC Conference. “Despite the challenges COVID-19 has thrown at our industry, necessitating postponement and adaptations of 2020 events, at Hannover Fairs we have been busy. We have offered free webinars and developed a number of virtual events hosted on innovative new, interactive platforms. We have also taken the time to connect with our communities on a personal level to get an understanding of how the pandemic has impacted their lives and the content that they will find valuable going forward. During this time, the AFAC committee has taken the opportunity to start preparations for the 2021 conference, which is set to showcase the leading edge of emergency service knowledge and practice in the region”. What works offline in the real world might not in the virtual, but that doesn’t mean your online workshop, class, or seminar has to suffer – providing a quality experience is possible in any format. A livestream or webinar is perfect for the digital experience because it broadens the scope of your event beyond physical boundaries. It also makes online guests feel like they are part of the live action. By contrast, a workshop that requires attendees to use physical materials they don’t own wouldn’t work, however this can be adapted to live demonstrations of the latest equipment. This can enable customers to get a feel for a product and further information despite not being able to test it themselves. Events that are based around discussion and thought leadership, like a forum, could add similar value in an online format. And if you’re worried about losing the benefits of networking, don’t. By encouraging guests to engage in the comments and chat section, you can provide a space for people to interact, share their thoughts and discuss the event, in real time. Part of feeling like you’re at an event is having a seamless audio and visual experience. Here are a few things to check to make sure your audience remains engaged.  Test your video and audio before your event: This way, you’ll be able to fix any issues before they impact your guest experience. Use a good-quality camera and headset: The camera on your computer will get the job done, but it’s important to remember your audience. People attend live events and gatherings for the rich, immersive experiences they offer. So invest in a quality camera and microphone to ensure your presence on their screens is sharp and clear. Make sure your connection is solid: It’s far from ideal if patchy WiFi means your live discussion cuts out every three minutes.
