Advanced’s Axis EN System offers fire protection

A host of fire and life safety solutions from Advanced have been installed to protect 26,000 sq. meters of grade A office space in Mohammed Bin Rashid City, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). EN 54-approved Axis EN fire panels with integrated voice evacuation and fire telephone systems have been installed across four, seven-story office buildings, at the prestigious Dubai Hills Estate Business Park, in Dubai. Cignetix installs Axis EN fire panels Cignetix Systems (Cignetix) was responsible for the installation, testing, and commissioning of the Advanced Axis EN fire panels at the site. The company also integrated its graphic command centres for system monitoring and configured its AlarmCalm software for false alarm management and reduction. The Axis EN system comprises five 4-loop panels with integrated telephone systems, two 2-loop, and four 1-loop panels, as well as a repeater. It is connected to over 1,000 detectors in each of the four office blocks, as well as to the site’s PC-based graphical mapping system, which is in turn connected to the Dubai Civil Defence for monitoring. The Axis EN system has been designed so that it is easy for new tenants to add more panels and devices to the network, depending on their individual fire protection requirements. Sunil Kumar Gopalkrishnan, the Managing Director of Cignetix Systems, said “Cignetix has worked with Advanced’s solutions for many years and we were entirely confident that its fire system could deliver the levels of performance and functionality required, to offer a high level of protection across this prestigious site.” Fire system integration with third-party systems Sunil Kumar Gopalkrishnan added, “We programmed a two-stage positive alarm sequence to support the site’s false alarm management strategy. We also integrated the fire system with a range of third-party systems, including access control lifts, air handling units, and smoke control, to make it easier for end-users to monitor, and control the system on a day-to-day basis.” Gary Craig, the Sales Director at Advanced, said “Cignetix has taken a 360-degree approach to fire protection, at the Dubai Hills Estate Business Park. They’ve carefully considered not only fire detection and notification but also false alarm management, graphical monitoring, and system integration.” Robust and reliable fire protection system Gary Craig added, “The result is a sophisticated system that will provide many years of robust and reliable fire protection for the business park’s users and infrastructure.” The commercial development, completed in 2019, is home to the headquarters of Emaar Properties, a multi-national real estate development company, and Dubai’s largest property developer. Zetron utilises Softil BEEHD technology framework

Johnson Controls announced it has acquired Provincial Sprinkler Company, a specialist fire suppression business. Based in Cork, Ireland, Provincial Sprinkler Company provides Johnson Controls with a stronger presence in the region. End-to-end fire suppression system The acquisition follows Johnson Controls’ strategy of offering a full, end-to-end fire suppression offering across the whole of the UK and Ireland. The deal enhances Johnson Controls’ ability to provide fire suppression products and services in the Republic of Ireland, including access to formidable customer relationships established in the local pharmaceutical, healthcare, industrial and commercial sectors. There will be no immediate changes to the day-to-day operation of the business, with the intent to provide customers with a seamless transition and continuity of high-quality customer and employee experience. The FIA collaborate with Tall Building Fire Safety

The FIA are delighted to announce their collaboration with Tall Building Fire Safety, bringing two new specialised courses on fire safety in tall and high-risk buildings. These two courses are:   Tall Building Fire Safety Management (Mixed and Business use) This course is designed for anyone tasked with the fire safety management of a tall building with mixed use (residential/office/retail). Developed in 2004, over 500 delegates have undertaken the course and it has become a de-facto competency requirement for many Tall Buildings in the UK. Tall Building Fire Safety Network is a fully approved training centre for Skills for Justice, and the course is recognised by the institution of fire engineers. Course outline: The 5-day intensive programme covers all aspects of the management process. Each day is themed starting with prevention, going onto detection and alarm, means of escape, fire containment and finishing with firefighting and BCP. Building fire case studies, along with the most common ignition hazards are reviewed and analysed. Who it’s for: This course is ideal for Tall Building Managers, supervisors, security managers, facility managers, health and safety managers, insurance surveyors, fire risk assessors, firefighters, fire and life safety system maintainers and anyone who needs to understand the building ‘fire strategy’. Learning outcomes (what do they get including CPD hrs): Skills for Justice approved qualification Recognised qualification with the Institution of fire engineers 30 hours of CPD Managing Fire Safety in Higher Risk Buildings and the Role of the Building Safety Manager This course is designed for anyone tasked with fire safety management in Higher Risk Buildings (HRB’s) or as a Building Safety Manager under the Building Safety Bill. Developed in early 2021, the course is a response to the learning needs and competency requirements of the Building Safety Bill (BSB). Several Social Housing Providers have attended the training to date. Tall Building Fire Safety Network (the training provider) is a fully approved training centre for Skills for Justice, and the course is recognised by the institution of fire engineers. Course outline: The 5-day intensive programme covers all aspects of the Building Safety Bill Fire Safety Management process. Each day is themed starting with prevention, going onto detection and alarm, means of escape, fire containment and finishing with firefighting and BCP. Gerry Dunphy, Event Director of FIREX  What does ‘fire protection’ mean to you?  It means assurance. Knowing that any building I’m in, any transportation I use or any public space I’m attending has a fully engineered, effective fire safety system in place. Whether it’s an automated response mechanism or the fire resilience is in the fabric of an enclosed space, I feel confident that fire safety is guaranteed.   What made you want to work in the industry?  As an event organiser/media representative, it went with the job. Because FIREX is such a market leading show with a strong reputation it was clear that the industry has a connection with everything we do. We must immerse ourselves in every sector we serve as we need to know the issues, dynamics and challenges in order to reflect what’s going on.  If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?  Always beware of your words and actions and how you’re perceived in certain situations. And watch that temper!   Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?  We have an 8-month-old dachshund puppy, so every day is amusing. Usually a ‘Fenton!!’ moment where he’s running off into the distance and I’m chasing him.  What three traits define you?  Inquisitive, impatient, aware  What’s the most important trend you see today?  In fire it’s the rise of IoT and connected devices and how the systems will integrate.   If you didn’t work in the fire industry, what would you be doing?  I would probably still be in some sort of media, on the editorial/ writing side  What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?  I’m quite a useful guitarist- and have been since my teenage years  What is one thing you would make compulsory in the office and one thing you would ban?  Flexible working is now proving to be a real positive so that would be compulsory. The one thing I would ban is Christmas jumpers!  Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  Hopefully still working in and around the fire and security industries in a similar capacity. The Security & Fire Excellence Awards 2021 took place on November 23 2021 at London Hilton on Park Lane   The 2021 Security & Fire Excellence Awards had a welcome return to a ‘live’ format, once again back at London Hilton on Park Lane. While the 2020 event was forced to take place online in a virtual setting due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year enabled the event to return in full force in a face-to-face environment.   Security Buyer and Fire Buyer are proud partners of the Security & Fire Excellence Awards, hosted by Ifsec International and Firex International. The team had a brilliant night celebrating with others in the industry. Sir Geoff Hurst then capped an evening to remember with a unique rendition of ‘Sweet Caroline’ with resident karaoke band, Rockaoke.   A member of the judging panel commented “A brilliant event as always. One issue though for next year … how are you going to top Sir Geoff Hurst singing karaoke? The Queen beat boxing? Sir David Attenborough dressed as a dinosaur? I wait in anticipation!”   Engineers of Tomorrow The event also showcased the future of the industry, with winners of the highly respected Engineers of Tomorrow (EoT) competition being recognised. The event, which covers security and fire, highlights the best of the next generation of systems installers from across the UK, while the electronic security systems competition also acts as the sole mechanism to represent the industry at WorldSkills UK.   Regional heats of next year’s competition will once again take place between January and March 2020. Multi-occupancy smoke control

Smoke control ventilation systems are imperative in fire safety, especially in multi-occupancy building fires. So, how can we ventilate stairwells?  Smoke ventilation systems are life safety systems designed to facilitate the safe escape of occupants in the event of a fire and also enable the fire to be fought in its early stages.​​ There is well defined and strict legislation and design guidance that defines and governs the installation, performance and maintenance of smoke ventilation systems that must be considered and adhered to when specifying any system.  Smoke control has been a life safety feature adopted in some types of buildings for over 50 years. Over time, there have been regulatory changes made to specific technical and performance parameters, but the basic concept of the smoke control system remains the same.  The purpose of smoke control is to reduce the build-up of smoke within an enclosed space in order to provide the occupants of the space sufficient time to evacuate to a safer area of the building or to exit the building. Smoke control systems are also designed to reduce the rate of growth of the ‘hot smoke’ layer in a fire affected zone such that it is maintained at above a typical person’s height for a sufficient period to allow occupants to escape the hazardous area.  A smoke control system is not designed to extinguish or control a fire or to protect the building contents from smoke damage. It may be used by firefighters to provide better conditions to fight a fire and to help clear residual smoke from an area following a fire event.  Smoke control systems are normally required for buildings more than 25 metres in effective height in accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC). There are other situations where smoke control systems are mandated, including some public buildings, large isolated buildings (large floor areas) and buildings with atria spanning more than two storeys. In addition, smoke control systems may be included where a fire engineered risk based design solution is utilised in lieu of a deemed to comply design.  Buildings over 25 metres also normally include stairwell pressurisation systems. Whilst not a smoke venting provision, stair pressurisation systems provide many of the same benefits of a smoke control system as they actively pressurise emergency escape stairs to limit prevent the ingress of smoke during evacuation.  Smoke control system design requirements are covered in Australian Standard AS/NZS 1668.1. Fire doors – Time to bridge the gap

Why do fire doors play such a crucial role in fire safety, and how can building management and homes ensure their doors are up to standard? Fire doors aren’t optional, they’re necessary. This simple construction is capable of saving lives if a fire is present. They are placed to allow people to exit safely and quickly. The manufacturing process for every fire door requires a rigorous approach. Following this, detailed testing is carried out to ensure they do their job right.  To differentiate a fire door from a regular door, there are a few bits of information to know about its manufacturing approach and how it works. An important part of any building’s passive fire protection system, they must meet requirements and be tested vigorously.  Fire doors are designed to be durable and safe. Therefore, the manufacturing process is the most important step. For this type of door to pass quality checks post-installation, all elements of the door set, and glazing must satisfy BS476: Part 22. Usually, these individual elements are not supplied by the same manufacturer, but they must be tested together as a whole and separately. The door set forms a point of protection, that’s why so many checks are required.  The most common fire doors are FD30 and FD60 fire doors which offer 30 and 60 minutes of fire protection. The key difference between the two is the minimum number of minutes that each protects for. Fire doors carry two main functions during a fire, when closed they must form a barrier to prevent the fire spreading and when opened they allow safe exiting out of the building.  Buildings are compartmentalised in their architecture, and fire doors should be fitted to help put safe passageways in the event of a fire into place. Every installed fire door is placed with the fire hazards in association with the building in mind. They’re used to effectively protect against exit points and to compartmentalise buildings into fire-safe areas. Let’s look at where fire doors need to be installed.  Private properties  Fire doors are recommended to be installed in areas most at risk of fire in private properties. Buildings with kitchens and any other interior space containing large amounts of electrical equipment and flammable items should have a fire door present.  When it comes to modern domestic properties, building regulations stipulate when and where FD30 doors should be used. And, these doors are required in buildings with 3 or more storeys as well as in two storey houses between integral garages and the main body of the house.  Commercial properties  Across all commercial properties, an in-detail fire risk assessment is required to determine how to minimise/eliminate risks.
