TVF discusses the different types of fire alarms

The importance of fire alarms is well understood these days, but not every building has the same requirements. That means there are several different fire alarm types that the premises could be fitted with, and while they all have the same aim – alerting people to a fire early enough to help save lives – they all work a little differently. TVF provide new installations and maintenance of fire alarm systems across the UK. TVF (UK) Limited guides through four of the main alarm types, providing information on how they work, what the benefits are, and any other important information: 1. Conventional fire alarms The traditional, conventional fire alarm is a system that uses zones to signify where a fire has broken out. Call points are used alongside detectors and when a fire is detected, the fire alarm control panel will light up to indicate the zone where the fire is. This allows the general location of the fire to be established, a useful feature for both the emergency services as well as for those responsible persons to initiate evacuation via the most appropriate route. A conventional fire alarm will be wired to at least two sounder circuits, utilising any range of audible indicators. Because each call point has to be wired directly to the fire alarm panel, this type of system is better suited for buildings with a more basic layout or smaller premises, reducing the number of points that need to be individually wired in. 2. Addressable fire alarms The addressable fire alarm gets its name from the fact that each call point can be assigned an address on the control panel to help pinpoint the exact location of a fire. This can save time and save lives when it comes to the outbreak of a fire in a larger building, allowing for safe evacuation as well as vital information for local fire and rescue services. The system operates similarly to the conventional fire alarm aside from the ability to show exactly which call point has been triggered. Because the call points and other devices can be wired into the loop, there is also the potential to trigger sounders and sprinklers if required. 3. Analogue addressable fire alarms An analog addressable fire alarm system is sometimes called an intelligent fire alarm system since it does more than simply detect the presence of a fire. The different call points and detectors can be set up and assigned for precision when it comes to location, but they also use their computer to send information about the general environment (fire, smoke, heat, faults, etc.). An analog system like this means that faults can be dealt with immediately and false alarms can thereby be reduced, while still alerting with pinpoint accuracy when a fire does break out. 1/3 of UK businesses failing to test fire alarms

According to a detailed survey conducted by fire safety specialist JLA, 20% of businesses only test their fire alarm systems once every year, while 40% have not given all their staff members training on the common causes of false fire alarms in the workplace. With employees and customers returning to workplaces and retail stores following the pandemic, JLA’s study highlights that many companies are ill-equipped to deal with the growing risk of fires at their sites, in turn posing huge risks to their employees and customer safety. The nationally representative survey of 250 business owners has unearthed the fact that over one third of businesses (38% of those questioned, in fact) do not have suitable fire risk assessments in place. Upwards of 80% don’t include details of regulations about fire alarms, and the risks they pose, within their company handbooks. What’s worse is that almost 40% of the businesses surveyed have not given all of their staff training on the common causes of false alarms and how to mitigate the risks of them happening within the workplace. This is particularly prevalent in restaurants, bars and cafes, where that figure rises to 75%. If businesses don’t train their staff members in fire prevention techniques and Best Practice, the associated risks could be huge. Damaged reputation, loss of revenue and a decrease in business efficiency are all potential consequences if businesses and employees are not prepared to deal with the impact of a false fire alarm sounding. Conducted as part of the company’s ‘False Fire Alarms’ campaign, JLA’s research reveals a huge lack of business preparedness in mitigating the risks associated with false fire alarms. Commenting on this research, Peter Martin (operations director for fire and security at JLA) told Fire Safety Matters: “The events of the past year have understandably caused companies’ attentions to move on towards more ‘business-critical’ decisions. However, with a potential 18 months of fire safety complacency, the risks posed to businesses now, as staff and customers slowly start to return to sites, could be much worse than anticipated.” Martin continued: “Our survey has revealed worrying statistics around businesses not maintaining their fire safety equipment and not delivering vital fire safety training to their staff. Tyco’s LFII lead-free sprinkler

Johnson Controls, the global provider for smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings launches the Tyco Series LFII Residential 4.9 K-factor Lead-Free for 13D Sprinkler. The concealed pendent sprinkler is manufactured with a polymeric material that carries anti-heat and anti-corrosion properties, making it ideal for long-lasting dependable fire protection in residential occupancies. It is the first fire sprinkler to be certified to ANSI/UL 199, the Standard for Automatic Sprinklers for Fire-Protection Service, specific to the use of polymer-based materials, by UL. Yellowknife Airport – Oshkosh Striker ARFF Vehicle

Oshkosh Airport Products, an Oshkosh Corporation Company, announced the Yellowknife Airport (YZF), located in Canada’s Northwest Territories, has taken delivery of an Oshkosh Airport Products Striker 6×6 ARFF vehicle. Sold through dealer Commercial Emergency Equipment Co. and delivered in late December 2021, the new ARFF truck will support the completion of a fleet renewal for emergency services at the Yellowknife Airport. Post-delivery inspection and extensive training have begun in preparation for the vehicle to join front line service in early 2022.“We looked at a lot of ARFF vehicles and contacted many airport fire service representatives, and those with Strikers all spoke highly of Oshkosh’s reputation and quality,” said Randy Straker, Regional Airport Manager with Yellowknife Airport. “In our location, winter arrives in October and doesn’t leave until mid-April, making a strong service partner essential to our operation. Prime Secure, wireless evacuation alarm technology

Prime Secure’s Fire Safety division, the Waking Watch Initiative, has launched the UK’s first affordable, wireless common fire alarm system, V-Fire, which removes the need for expensive waking watch fire marshals in high-rise buildings with flammable cladding. In the wake of the Grenfell disaster, thousands of leaseholders across the UK have shouldered the financial burden of either a wired alarm solution, or a waking watch fire marshal, which could cost more than £340,000** a year for a medium-sized 6-storey block of 34 flats. With experience across construction, corporate and property sectors, Prime Secure has utilised its wireless technology expertise from its CCTV systems, to develop the solution – a fully compliant common fire alarm system – costing just over £61,000 a year for a same sized property. Currently, waking watch fire marshals maintain a presence on each floor of buildings identified as having dangerous cladding; continually patrolling the interior and exterior 24/7, in order to detect a fire, raise the alarm, and carry out the role of evacuation management. Rented rather than bought outright, the alarm system negates the need for these expensive marshals, a requirement for more than 460 buildings across the UK, which the company estimates will constitute an average leaseholder saving of 82%. The announcement follows the closing of the Government’s Waking Watch Relief Fund, a £30 million fund for the costs of installing an alarm system in buildings in England with unsafe cladding, with only a third (179) of the 460 buildings identified as at risk were successful in applications. The Government’s own findings suggest the interim measure of waking watch fire marshals can cost between £12,000 and £45,000 per week per building, depending on the number of individuals and hours covered. As the financial burden will now be shouldered by residents, Prime Secure says a cost-saving tech solution is now more important than ever. According to the company, the pre-configured V-Fire solution is quick and easy to install, without any impact on existing fire compartmentalisation, with its high-tech nerve centre capable of monitoring and controlling any number of BS EN54 certified heat detectors. On every deployment, Prime Secure provides each high-rise development with a personal client liaison manager. Prime Secure’s Duncan Cromb said “The updated guidance, in the event of fire in buildings with flammable cladding, is to simultaneously evacuate all residents. In buildings with unsafe cladding, thousands of residents across the UK have had to pay for the deployment of cost-prohibitive waking watch marshals to adhere to this. “However, common fire alarm systems can do the same job a lot quicker and more cost-effectively. Our solution is specifically designed for this use and can be cheaply and easily converted to a permanent simultaneous evacuation alert system for exclusive use by the fire brigade, and in line with a stay-put evacuation policy, if and when the flammable cladding has been replaced. “Wireless technology has helped to revolutionise security in the construction industry – with CCTV towers replacing security guards, delivering massive cost savings, and increasing effectiveness – and now it is the waking watch market’s turn. Honeywell makes strategic investment in RapidSOS

Honeywell announced a strategic investment in RapidSOS, as well as technology integrations between the two companies that will further modernise and digitise the public safety communications process. RapidSOS is the emergency response data platform used by more than 5,200 emergency communications centers (ECCs) worldwide. The existing communications infrastructure between buildings, alarm monitoring stations, emergency centers and fire stations often uses legacy, manual technology, which slows response times and affects the accuracy of transmitted information. Through the strategic investment and technology integrations, the Honeywell Connected Life Safety System (CLSS) will link to the RapidSOS emergency response data platform to provide faster, more accurate communications with emergency centers (i.e., 911 agencies). When combined with Honeywell’s solutions, RapidSOS technology will securely transmit detailed data about the emergency, such as the type of hazard, severity, and location within the impacted building to emergency response centers. “Time matters in an emergency. If you add up the time that regulations allow for each step in the current emergency communications process, it takes 590 seconds – or nearly 10 minutes – from the time a fire is first detected to when first responders arrive at a building. We’re trying to improve communications processes to cut that time in half,” said Jurgen van Goethem, President of Commercial Fire and Security for Honeywell Building Technologies. “This investment in RapidSOS helps to further our efforts to improve both the quality of information shared and the time it takes for first responders to arrive at an emergency, potentially saving more lives. RapidSOS helps to deliver better information to emergency centers while our recent acquisition of US Digital Designs improves communication from the emergency center to the fire station.” Honeywell recently acquired US Digital Designs, which delivers alerting and dispatch communications solutions to enhance first responders’ efficacy and enable faster emergency response times. Honeywell’s public safety communications portfolio also includes Fiplex bi-directional amplifiers (BDAs) that provide continuous and critical in-building radio coverage. “Honeywell provides critical life safety systems that enable facility managers to harness the power of data to deliver enhanced fire safety service,” said Michael Martin, CEO, RapidSOS, “We are excited to work with Honeywell and equip first responders with intelligent, incident-specific connected building data before arriving on-scene to better protect our communities.” RapidSOS works with public safety agencies to provide an emergency response data platform that integrates across first responder software and operational systems. RapidSOS connects more than 400 million devices to thousands of 911 agencies supporting more than 165 million emergencies annually. The offerings complement Honeywell’s suite of solutions that help its customers meet their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, including improving the safety of building occupants and first responders. Global Fire Equipment launches OWL

Global Fire Equipment (GFE) has launched OWL, an advanced ‘plug and play’ fire alarm management and monitoring software for its CHAMELEON Network range of intelligent control panels. Thanks to its high-quality graphical user interface, OWL users can monitor the status of their fire alarm panels and receive real-time information and complete visibility of their entire fire detection alarm system (FDAS). Intuitive, user-friendly and very easy to set up and operate, OWL is the ideal solution for all sizes and types of installations – supporting everything from a single panel system to multi-panel and multi-site applications with up to 64 systems. In three simple steps, customers can use OWL to import their configuration files from the panel to the OWL monitoring software: · Step 1 – export the configuration files from the fire alarm control panel to a PC · Step 2 – import the configuration files from the PC to the OWL software · Step 3 – commission the system with a simple click, drag and drop OWL is fully compatible with GFE’s CHAMELEON Network range of intelligent control panels; G-ONE, GEKKO and OCTO+. As it is a PC-based platform, OWL can be accessed simultaneously from different PCs wherever they are located in the world as long as they are on the same network. The software can be backed up in case of a main PC outage and a customer’s configuration file can also be restored. OWL’s sleek and easy to use graphical user interface displays all of the system’s devices and alarm events, along with information about the state of the panel. Arranged in a simple and logical way using a floor plan, the graphics and icons allow users to identify in real time any fire alarms and faults and then quickly respond. Each panel can be displayed on the screen as though the operator was standing in front of it, and basic command actions such as ‘activate sounders’, ‘silence sounders’, ‘silence buzzers’ and ‘system reset’ can be achieved in an intuitive way from the software’s main menu. Simple control buttons allow the user to enable and disable field devices, and analogue values can also be obtained from all field devices via a menu selection. OWL software records every individual alarm, fault, user access and interaction on the FDAS, providing complete system visibility. The affected area of the building is highlighted, and the icons indicate the exact location of an alarm event or fault. Every system interaction is logged, and the log can be exported if and when required, for example, to provide an insurance company with a log of alarms/warnings in the event of a fire or to provide a fire brigade with fire detection logs for weekly fire testing. There are two levels of control of the OWL software: administrator and operator. Up to four administrators can have full access to the system and can use the software to make any changes to the system’s cause and effect configuration. Programming for administrators is password protected. An unlimited number of users can be granted operator control and can receive email or SMS notifications – or both. Once users are defined, each individual user can be given specific instructions.
