Teledyne FLIR launches Conservator Subscription

Teledyne FLIR announced the release of Conservator, a cloud-based dataset development subscription software for perception engineers using thermal infrared and visible image datasets to train neural networks. Subscribers also gain access to application specific segments of the Teledyne FLIR annotated image library of more than one million images with more than 100 object label categories. Designed to meet the workflow demands of data scientists in automotive, defense, security and smart cities applications, Conservator scales to support enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) teams in the research and development of object detection models. “Conservator is a powerful application for data scientists developing datasets with a full complement of workflow functions including annotation, version control, data right access and model performance,” said Arthur Stout, Director of AI product management at Teledyne FLIR Infrared Imaging OEM. “AI starts with quality data and this application supports collaboration to advance multi-sensor neural network development in commercial and defense AI applications.” Conservator includes dataset workflow tools for annotation, curation, quality assurance, and dataset version control. Built on a scalable and stable database, Conservator can manage petabyte scale libraries. In addition, the included Conservator Insights desktop tool provides analysis and visualisation of model performance against ground truth references. This empowers data scientists to quickly pinpoint the specific images in large datasets causing false positives or missed detections, enabling rapid dataset iteration and neural network re-training. Conservator follows the recent release of the Teledyne FLIR expanded free starter thermal dataset for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and self-driving vehicle researchers and developers. SICUR 2022 Safety & Security Trade Fair

SICUR FORUM, the programme of technical seminars at the SICUR 2022 International Safety and Security Trade Fair will run from 22 to 25 February. It provides a space for analysis and debate that will address the most topical issues and the new challenges in security, as part of a critical event that will reflect the importance of this sector for the functioning of the economy and the progress of society. The SICUR FORUM follows the same organisational format as the trade fair, by sector: Security, Fire Safety and Emergencies, Occupational Health and Safety, and SICUR Cyber. Security The Security block will host the seminar presenting the Cluster 3 HORIZON EUROPE FORUM ‘Civil Security for Society’, organised by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), as well as the conferences ‘Women and Security: we drive change in trends’ from the Spanish Association of Security Companies (AES) and ‘Are we Contracting Satisfactory Security Services?’ from the Business Confederation of Security and Service Users (CEUSS). There will also be a session entitled ‘ERTZAINTZA’s Commitment to Innovation: some examples of impact’, while AES is organising the seminar ‘40 years of boosting the industry: global security, new challenges and demands’, which will be organised into four talks discussing the disappearance of cash in Spain, biometrics in private security, digitalisation in private security and EU Next Generation funds, and cybersecurity standards for technology products and services in the security industry. Fire safety and emergencies At the forum dedicated to fire safety and emergencies, the Valencia Local Police will present ‘DARLENE – Augmented Reality and the Security Forces for Critical Incident Resolution’ and ‘STAMINA – for Pandemic and Security Crisis Management: the first international forum demonstrating technological solutions’. The seminar ‘Pre-Commercial Public Procurement: preliminary market consultation for the European iProcureSecurity Project’, organised by the 061 Health Emergency Centre of the Regional Government of Andalusia, will discuss the pre-commercial acquisition of innovative triage management systems and the strengthening of resilience and interoperability of emergency medical services. Meanwhile, the Spanish Association of Fire Protection Societies, TECNIFUEGO, is organising a session addressing issues such as remote inspection for safety optimisation, options for protection against storm risks, early warning in industrial facilities and forested areas, new technologies – including drones and artificial intelligence – in the field of fire detection, fire protection engineering in the prevention of occupational risks, and digitalisation of services associated with fire protection maintenance. Supply chain issues in the fire & security industry

A simple incident can be disastrous for something as vital as the supply chain as we have seen with the blockage of the Suez Canal. The essence of that chain is to give companies the certainty that raw materials and components are available in order to produce the finished goods. The pandemic resulted in lockdowns, and a high demand because of digitisation together with economic recovery. This meant that this certainty is challenged. When manufacturers are looking for alternative material and components they can face re-certification of their products, or new developed products cannot be released. As a result of this existing products must stay longer available. The fire safety and security market is highly dependent on electronics and with that the industry is affected by the supply chain crisis. Supply chains are formed by complex connections between companies. It starts with the raw materials and ends with finished goods for industry and end user. One chain can include up to thousands of companies. This is not a problem because, thanks to proven forecasting methods, the activities of the companies in the supply chain are precisely coordinated. This considers demand, supply, seasonal influences or specific characteristics of regions. What is not considered – and what is not possible – are unknown factors. These can lead to the forecasts no longer being correct. The well-oiled machine of the supply chain then quickly starts to creak and squeak. Risky dependencies The consequences of the corona crisis have led many governments to recognise that the high dependence on producers out of one region poses a great a risk to certain sectors. For example, the fact that many European countries have no production capacity for facemasks which were needed during the pandemic, is perhaps the best example of this. For electronic chips and components we face the same challenge; to reduce the risks there is simply a need for more and better distributed production facilities. In the pursuit of lean manufacturing, production has been outsourced to Asia which means that a shutdown of factories in one country can have a global impact. The EU also recognised this even before the pandemic. Accelerated by the corona crisis, the EU is focusing its policy, among other things, on increasing domestic capacity and diversifying the number of suppliers. Effects on the fire safety and security industry The supply chain crisis caused by the pandemic also affects companies in the fire safety and security industry. The effects not only concern the manufacturers of equipment but also companies in the field of service and maintenance of systems. Outside this there are other areas that can impact building safety. An example of this is that recommended emergency escape routes that were in place before the lockdowns are now mixed with the one-way traffic signs intended to allow employees to pass at a safe distance from each other. Manufacturers of electronic fire safety and security equipment are affected by the disruption in transport and shortages on natural resources and core materials. COVID-19 has shown that unexpected events can shatter the basic premise that materials will be easily accessible, disrupting supply chain performance. The chain reaction initially caused by the shutdown of factories in countries effected not only the supply chains but also the workflows within and between companies. Engineers of Tomorrow returns to IFSEC & FIREX

The highly regarded IFSEC Engineers of Tomorrow competition continued to go from strength to strength in 2021, and the stakeholders behind the event are delighted to announce its return for 2022. Engineers of Tomorrow helps to raise the profile of engineering apprenticeships and the opportunities they represent within the sector. Taking place at IFSEC and FIREX International each year, winners of regional heats compete in a live installation challenge at the show. The process involves two separate competitions – one for electronic security systems, and the other for fire systems. The application process is now open for any apprentices in the security and fire sector looking to take part. While the 2020 competition was unfortunately unable to go ahead, due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, 2021’s competition saw a record number of entries take part, despite the challenges and restrictions of the global pandemic. Apprentice finalists will get the chance to show off their skills in front of thousands of peers and professionals from the security and fire sectors. The regional heats took the form of a knowledge-based assessment which was completed online and invigilated by an employer or tutor. The winners of the Engineers of Tomorrow competitions were announced at the prestigious Security & Fire Excellence Awards in November, while the WorldSkills UK winners were revealed live by Steph McGovern a week later. The industry was well represented on the live show, with Tom Sixsmith, Apprentice Fire & Security Engineer from EFT Group, on the panel talking about his passion for the industry. Jordan Duggan, Director at EFT Systems, added “EFT Systems were delighted to have one of our apprentices Tom on the panel for the WSUK Ceremony. Red Cross responds to more than 6,600 home fires

Tragically, January 2022 was heartbreaking for many families due to home fires across the country, with as many as 328 lives lost in fires in that month alone. In January, the American Red Cross responded to more than 6,600 home fires, providing help to nearly 25,000 people. Red Cross’ hearts go out to all those who have been affected by these tragedies. Home fire safety The Red Cross has steps people can follow to help them stay safe should a fire happen in their home. Users can protect themselves from home fires by taking two simple steps: test smoke alarms monthly and practice a fire escape plan. Test smoke alarms monthly. Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Place smoke alarms on each level of the home, and inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Change the batteries at least once a year, if the model requires it. Also, check the manufacturer’s date of the smoke alarms. If they’re 10 years or older, they need to be replaced because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Practice an escape plan until everyone can get out in less than two minutes. To create the home fire escape plan, including at least two ways to exit every room in the home. Select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from their homes, such as a neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in the front yard, where everyone knows to meet. Teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like. Talk about fire safety and what to do in an emergency. Steps to help heat home safely  One of the leading causes of home fires is home heating and space heaters are most often responsible for these fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Have furnaces, chimneys, fireplaces, wood, and coal stoves inspected and cleaned before another winter of use. If using a space heater, look for a model that shuts off automatically if the heater falls over. Place the heater on a level, hard and nonflammable surface in the home. Keep all potential sources of fuel like paper, clothing, bedding, curtains, or rugs at least three feet away from space heaters, stoves, or fireplaces. Portable heaters and fireplaces should never be left unattended. Turn off space heaters and make sure any embers in the fireplace are extinguished before going to bed or leaving home. Keep children and pets away from space heaters. Never use a cooking range or oven to heat the home. Keep fire in the fireplace by using a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs. Test batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
