Emergency lighting – Foundation of life safety

Emergency lighting is an integral part of a fire risk assessment and dramatically aids emergency evacuation in the event of a fire  Emergency lighting is a range of backup lights that will operate fully automatically in the event of a power failure. It provides sufficient illumination to enable all occupants of a building to evacuate the premises safely during a blackout.   If you own or manage a building, you hope that there’s never an emergency inside or around it. Despite that, it’s best to have systems put in place in case there is an emergency. Emergency lighting is a key cog in any building’s emergency response system.  What is an emergency lighting system? It’s a series of light sources that operate independently from the main power grid to ensure their function in the event of a power outage. What causes the emergency lights to come on? A power outage or other emergency event. What is an emergency lighting system? It’s a battery-backed lighting system that’s mandated by law. Installing emergency lighting in commercial and residential buildings isn’t exactly a choice, as it’s written into all standard building codes. This makes sense because government regulations are meant to protect both the occupants of a building and first responders who might be called there during an emergency. Failing to comply with emergency lighting regulations can lead to charges and/or fines.  If there’s an emergency in a multi-occupant building, the last thing you would want is for people to be bumping around in the dark, unable to see or vacate the premises in a timely manner. Emergency lighting allows people to find the exits quickly and get out as fast as possible. In a crisis like a building fire, every second counts, so having hallways and exit signs lit up can mean the difference between life and death.  What causes the emergency lights to come on? An emergency and/or a power outage event. If there’s a crisis, people may panic. Unfortunately, that can make things much worse, as evidenced by multiple catastrophic crowd crushes and fire disasters that have occurred over the years. Having well-lit hallways and exit signs can provide people with an obvious path out of the building, minimizing confusion and helping them to stay calm. When people remain calm during emergencies, they increase the chance of their own survival and others within the building.  Emergency lighting not only helps the occupants of the building, but it also makes the first responders’ jobs easier and safer too. Most first responders won’t know the layout of the building that they’re called to, so in the absence of light, they won’t know where to go or how to get to where they need to in the event of an emergency. When every second counts, having illuminated hallways and exit signs can allow first responders to reach the area of emergency more quickly and possibly allow them to save people’s lives.  If you install an entire backup lighting system in your building, you may be able to save your business money. Coopers Fire launches guide to fire safety in care homes

Establishing fire safety measures in a care home is far more complicated than in a typical work setting and can have serious consequences if they are not implemented correctly whether that be the cost of someone’s life or a costly regulation breach. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that those involved with the fire safety process have a responsibility to keep the building safe. Care providers are the designated ‘responsible person’ when looking after residents during the event of a fire. The Importance Of Fire Safety In Care Homes Fire safety is essential to any premises. However, considering the nature of a care home, there are special considerations to think of. Care home residents often struggle with mobility issues and neurodegenerative diseases which require 24-7 care and daily medication. Emergency evacuations are not as easy as directing visitors and residents to evacuation points. Many residents will struggle to reach exits in quick time, not to mention those who are bed-bound, deaf, blind, or suffering from general disorientation. Carers and staff members are also at just as much risk. While they are physically and mentally able to evacuate the building, they have a duty of care and responsibility to their patients first and foremost. The Main Causes Of Fire In Care Homes With most buildings, the common reasons for fires are often caused by cooking appliances or malfunction in electrical equipment. Care homes will have numerous alarms and medical equipment such as medical oxygen cylinders plugged in 24-7. While paperwork such as patient files is more of a trigger than a cause, it is essential to keep them in mind when creating a fire risk assessment. There are numerous procedures a care home can conduct to present a safe and fire preventative home for the vulnerable generation to live comfortably. Below are the standard practices care homes must abide by to prevent fire. Fire Risk Assessments LFB completed a review of fire safety in care homes in 2020, which found that nearly half of the homes reviewed did not have an adequate fire risk assessment. Every care home must present a heavily detailed and regularly updated fire risk assessment to their staff and everyone involved. A fire risk assessment will highlight fire safety risks and the measures and improvement plans to limit fire risks. Due to the unique difficulties involved, it is best to seek a specialist with the knowledge and experience in care home fire safety to conduct a fire risk assessment – this is not required but recommended. Fire Extinguishers According to the current fire safety laws for care homes in the UK, all homes must have fire-fighting equipment such as fire extinguishers and hoses, which any resident or staff member can use in an emergency. Fire extinguishers must be regularly serviced and meet health and safety standards. Place them throughout the building in locations where they are easily accessible and where a fire could potentially occur. FIA Digital Logbooks tender news piece

The FIA was recently asked by the industry to investigate the possibility of delivering digital Fire Logbooks.  For many years the FIA has supplied paper-based logbooks however the time to switch to a digital option has never been more pressing. A direct result of the Grenfell Inquiry and Hackett Review is the proposed Building Safety Bill.  One of the key recommendations from the enquiry and review that has made its way into the bill is the ‘Golden Thread’ of vital information about a building over its lifetime.  This information should be recorded and stored digitally, hence the reason for the FIA stepping up to provide assistance in this area. Currently, paper-based fire logbooks are often poorly maintained or go missing and have to be re-purchased.  This means that vital safety information about many building across the country is simply vanishing on a daily basis.  Clearly this far below the standard of today’s industry. Due to the implications of creating and maintaining such a piece of software internally, the decision has been made to put the opportunity to partner with the FIA in this venture out to tender. FIA Commercial Manager, Chris Tilley said: “With the range of software solutions currently available and under development within our industry, this is a golden opportunity for the FIA to partner with companies directly from the fire industry for the good of the industry.  We have no intention to develop this level of software ourselves, rather our hope is that through partnership with existing providers we can recognise and promote the hard work already completed and encourage further development across the industry.” The successful applicant will be awarded the contract based on the ability to deliver against the requirements outlined in the documents on the FIA website. Fire protection definitely makes people safer and helps save lives and properties.   What’s your all time favourite movie?   Life of Pi movie is one of my favourites. I like how the narrator tells his journey, during which many different emotions come, but always full of poetry and astonishing visuals.    If you weren’t in the fire industry – what would you be doing and why?  Robotics and new technologies have always driven me around. Yesterday in the 2D/3D mapping and today in the Fire industry. Tomorrow I might try to engage myself more in Environmental Protection & Sustainability, as it is a very important topic for me.  What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?  As a basketball player, I live by the quote ‘’ You miss all the shots you don’t take’’.  More than just a piece of advice, a person who doesn’t make mistakes is unlikely to make anything. It is usually after a failure that we find the best out of ourselves. ‘’Fail, fail again, fail better – Samuel Becket’’   Describe yourself in three words?  Perceptive – Honest – Resourceful   What makes you excited about the future of the fire industry?  The ongoing digital revolution is already very exciting, with many projects such as Smart Fire Fighters, Electric Fire Trucks, 5G devices and A.I implementations. The future of the fire industry will definitely be connected.   Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  In 5 years, I’d like to see myself living a peaceful life with my family and continue to work daily on having a positive social impact, still most probably in the drone/robotics industry.I would like to use my energy to develop sustainable solutions for a better world.  Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?  People often ask me where I did my engineering studies, usually after technical talks or demonstrations with clients or partners. It turns out that I did not study engineers but an MBA Business Management & Entrepreneurship, but today with 8 years of experience in industrial robotics.  What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?   My love for travels and cross-cultural meetings. Coming from France, I’m grateful for the day I’ve started to learn foreign languages (English and Spanish). The NFCC announces UK fire service convoy in Poland

The biggest UK fire service convoy – made up of 22 vehicles and more than 5,000 items of kit and equipment, donated by UK fire and rescue services, has been deployed to support firefighters in Ukraine, on Saturday, March 19, 2022. More than 60 volunteers from FIRE AID and fire and rescue services are taking the convoy into Poland. It will then make its way into Ukraine, providing vitally needed equipment to support firefighters, emergency services and volunteers, battling together on the frontline. UK Fire Service convoy for Ukraine Vehicles underwent final checks and the convoy departed from Kent, in the United Kingdom, early on Saturday morning, on March 19, 2022. The convoy will take approximately three days to arrive in Poland, from where it will be transferred to Ukraine. When it reaches Ukraine, the equipment will be used to support emergency services, which are dealing daily with fires and other emergencies to protect lives, people and property as the invasion devastates the country, often using old or worn equipment. Convoy includes fire engines and incident response unit Coordinated by UK charity, FIRE AID and International Development (FIRE AID), the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), and the fire industry through the Fire Industry Association (FIA), the 22-strong vehicle convoy includes 15 fire engines, an incident response unit, a hydraulic rescue platform, mechanical support for the journey, and two lorries containing equipment, such as thermal imaging cameras, generators, lighting, hoses, and thousands of sets of PPE. The deployment of these donations is being supported by funding from the UK Home Office, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and the FIA Foundation, as well as through a public appeal via JustGiving. Fire Sector played key role in deployment The wider fire sector, including the MSA Safety, the Fire Sector Federation (FSF), the Fire and Rescue Suppliers (FIRESA) Association and the Fire Industry Association (FIA), are also key partners in supporting and making the deployment of the life-saving equipment to Ukraine. Claire Hoyland, the Project Manager at FIRE AID and International Development (FIRE AID), said “We’re calling this a mega convoy, as it is not only mega in size, but it has been truly a monumental effort from all involved. Within two weeks we have put together the biggest ever donation of aid from UK Fire and Rescue services.” She added “I am so proud of everyone involved and so grateful for the support of our project partners, including EASST, NFCC, and the Home Office, along with many others who have contributed time, money, and assistance.” FIRE AID members working in Ukraine for a long time Claire Hoyland further said, “FIRE AID members have been working in Ukraine for more than a decade. We have a number of friends and colleagues within the Ukrainian fire service, who are battling fires and responding to emergencies on the front line. We know that this donation is much needed and we are proud to be able to help in whatever way we can.” The Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), Mark Hardingham said “To see the convoy of fire vehicles – packed with thousands of pieces of firefighting equipment, start its journey was incredibly humbling. The Fire Protection Association’s (FPA) InfoZone seminar theatre returns for 2022 this May, with an agenda covering a wide range of crucial talking points in the fire safety industry for attendees at FIREX International. Alongside its welcome reception area, where the FPA will be available for meetings and networking with members and the full supply chain of fire safety professionals, the popular InfoZone seminar theatre returns for FIREX International 2022, at London’s ExCeL between 17-19 May. PFE relies on FLIR Thermal Studio

British inspection specialist PFE Limited uses FLIR Thermal Studio software to accelerate site inspections and reporting, and to deliver consistent reporting quality to its demanding customer base. Based in Wallasey, North-West England, PFE Limited is a family-owned business, specialising in a wide range of inspection and reliability services for industrial customers. To provide trustworthy and repeatable reporting quality, PFE engineers make use of the latest technology on the market for vibration analysis, dynamic balancing and thermography, among other things. The company has been using thermal imaging for more than 15 years for mechanical, electrical, and process-related inspections. One of the more specialised types of inspections that PFE Limited offers are furnace inspections, for which the company is using a FLIR Exx-Series pistol-grip camera. Practical, all-in-one inspection tool The most tangible output that the company is offering to its customers are reports, so it speaks for itself these need to be of consistently high quality. PFE Limited therefore relies on FLIR Thermal Studio software with routing functionality from the FLIR Route Creator plugin. “We used to go on site for our inspections, combining the use of a thermal imaging camera with some kind of clipboard or electronic tablet,” said Jake Ford, Reliability & Mechanical Engineer at PFE. “For every asset and every image taken with our thermal camera, we used to jot down numbers and comments on a separate device. This was not only unpractical, but it also took twice the time we spend on inspections today. Thanks to the introduction of the FLIR Thermal Studio software, we were able to cut our inspection time in half.” Pre-planned routes The PFE Limited team especially values the FLIR Route Creator plugin, which allows users to create pre-planned routes in FLIR Thermal Studio for their inspections. Routes can be downloaded to any FLIR thermal camera that has FLIR Inspection Route on-board software, and then run from the camera itself. This means inspectors no longer need to carry two separate items—which is much more practical—helps them stay organised when surveying large or multiple locations, and above all, ensures they don’t miss any assets or inspection areas. Also, inspection routes are not always linear: PFE engineers do not always follow the same order. They often skip certain assets and need to go back and forth on different moments in time. With a simple clipboard or tablet, the risk of missing assets from inspections is much higher. When Inspection Route is active on the camera, the progress in the pre-planned route is always clearly visible and the software tells the user exactly which assets are left to do. “A typical furnace inspection used to take us about four hours.
