MSA to showcase equipment at ESS 2022

MSA Safety Incorporated, experts in firefighter safety equipment and technology, will be taking centre stage at the upcoming Emergency Services Show (ESS) in Birmingham, September 21 and 22, by demonstrating its full suite of cutting-edge, compatible personal protective equipment (PPE) for the first responder market. The MSA team will demonstrate how its fire protective clothing, helmets, breathing apparatus, advanced communications, and gas detection systems work seamlessly together in range of different applications. Show attendees will be invited experience MSA’s Connected Firefighter Platform, a new suite of advanced safety technologies that work in concert to significantly improve firefighter monitoring, accountability and communication. Two key components of the Platform are the LUNAR Connected Device and MSA’s FireGrid software services. A multifunctional handheld device, LUNAR provides personal thermal imaging and several other innovative features that are designed to enhance firefighter safety and accountability. These innovations include MSA’s proprietary Firefighting Assisting Search Technology (F.A.S.T.) network, which alerts and guides teammates to downed team members. With cloud connectivity, LUNAR also provides incident command with an overview of on-scene operations by aggregating data from other MSA devices, such as the M1 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which was recently selected by the London Fire Brigade as its new respiratory protection system of choice. In use, LUNAR can transmit vital SCBA data such as cylinder air pressure, battery status and various alarm indicators. The FireGrid component enables incident commanders to evaluate and manage multiple situations, in real time, and from any location. LUKAS Hydraulics’s Product Manager, Daniel Engelhardt, speaks to Fire Buyer about how future technologies can help guide rescue equipment  LUKAS – THE NAME STANDS FOR HYDRAULICS.  Since the end of the 1940s, pioneering hydraulic products have been manufactured in Erlangen: Initially only for industrial applications, in 1955 the field of rerailing technology was added and in 1972 LUKAS was the first supplier to develop the first hydraulic cutter for rescue operations. A milestone for an entire industry was thus laid.  Today, the company is represented worldwide by an extensive dealer network with its hydraulic products in three different product branches.  The exceptional LUKAS high-pressure hydraulics for industrial use move heavy loads through aluminium light metal cylinders.  To get back to the track bed quickly and safely, the rerailing technology branch is responsible.  And our hydraulic rescue technology supports emergency services worldwide to save lives.   Could you introduce yourself what you do?   My name is Daniel Engelhardt and I have been the product manager for rescue tools at LUKAS for two years. Before that, I worked for six years as a sales manager at LUKAS for Southern Europe, Scandinavia and Australia, among other countries.   Your hydraulic equipment is amongst the best in the world. How do you ensure innovation in your products?  At best, it is an interplay between the voices of customers who tell us what improvements they expect from our products, and our own innovative strength and determination not only to develop new products, but also to offer solutions to our customers. Here, our very open-minded team that thinks outside the box and very flat hierarchies help us to implement new ideas. Not every idea makes it into series production in the end, but our structures enable everyone in the team to contribute their ideas and also implement them.   What does living in a more digitalised world mean for the fire industry?  Above all, many opportunities.  Significantly improved communication, organisation, and interaction among responders.    Acting quickly and efficiently in an emergency is becoming increasingly difficult for many fire departments. Among other things, many fire departments are suffering from an acute shortage of personnel. This affects both the professional fire departments in larger cities, as well as the many volunteer fire departments that perform outstanding work on a voluntary basis in sparsely populated areas. In order to be able to deploy a sufficient number of personnel within a few minutes, digital deployment plans have become the new standard in many places.   Examples include digital personnel planning, the use of drones for reconnaissance or robots at dangerous locations, sensory protective clothing for endangered firefighters that measures vital data and detects hazardous substances.   Where do you see the future of software integration in search and rescue equipment heading?  The future is already present with us. With our e³ tools, we have already taken a big step ahead of the competition in terms of innovative, direct performance diagnostics since last August. Ask the Expert – Godiva

We speak exclusively with Guy Jackson, Director of Global Waterflow Technologies at Godiva, about how their innovative product SAMFlows seeks to streamline fire pumps with the aid of modern technologies  Could you introduce yourself and your role with SAMFlows/Godiva in Europe?  My role at Godiva and within the Idex group oversees the product management of Waterflow Technologies which includes pumps and monitors. I’ve worked in product management for over 20 years, mostly in manufacturing/engineering environments. SAMFlows was developed in North America and has been on the market there under the brand name SAM since 2019. Complications caused by the pandemic postponed its launch in other regions but we are now promoting it across the world. I have been part of the team preparing supporting this effort and we are getting a lot of positive interest.    Would you mind telling us about SAMFlows and what it’s innovating in the fire industry?   SAMFlows is an impressive automated total waterflow control system. The system uses a network of electronics including sensors and electronic inlet and discharge valves integrated into a Godiva Prima pump. Everything is controlled intelligently by a touchscreen Control Centre which is also the operator’s interface with the system. SAMFlows manages the tank, inlets, the pump and discharges. As soon as the PTO is engaged SAMFlows gets to work opening the tank-to-pump valve and priming the pump so that it is ready to flow water as soon as branch operators need it. The system can manage and maintain different pressures across as many as 6 different discharges and switches between different water sources safely and seamlessly with no interruption to waterflow. It simplifies and speeds up pump operation and makes everything safer for the pump operator and crew. Hazards such as pressure spikes and water hammer are quickly identified and dealt with as are issues with high and low hydrant pressure or insufficient flow. With SAMFlows, looking after all these elements of pump operation the pump operator can be confident that everything is under control and so focus more on the rest of the crew and their needs.   How closely do the European and US divisions within IDEX Fire & Safety interact on R&D and Innovation given the differing standards between the regions?   We work very closely with our colleagues in North America. We are in daily contact with our US and other European teams and have weekly update meetings on each-other’s projects so that we can maximise the benefits of our shared expertise. While firefighting vehicles, equipment and practices are different between regions we have a common goal to make the best, most efficient and most reliable equipment for firefighters. Innovation and excellence developed in one region can readily benefit others, so any new ideas or developments are shared. SAMFlows is a good example of a product developed in one region and then adapted and further developed to meet the different standards in another region. We are all aware of emergency lighting in all its forms, but how have they been tailored over time to appeal to human biology and psychology?  The development of batteries and harnessing the power of electricity is argued by many to be the greatest technological advancement in human history, rivalling that of the development of iron tools and agriculture. This argument is not misplaced, either – everywhere we look in the modern world, we see a world powered by electricity. Indeed, many developing solutions for clean and environmentally friendly power are ultimately converted into electricity at the end of its cycle anyway.   One of the first and nowadays vastly underappreciated technologies is lighting. We’re all well aware of the utility that comes with being able to see in dark areas, both inside and out of settlements, but another important use of lighting that isn’t considered by many is the ability to communicate information. Certain colours of lighting can denote danger, safety and power. Not only this, but the placement and positioning of these lights – even the lights being on or not, denotes important and intrinsic information that transcends spoken language and culture. You could show a European and an Asian the same red flashing light and they would both come to the same conclusions.   It is for this reason that lighting is used almost exclusively in emergency situations, especially in large public areas where a multitude of different people can be found. Lighting offers fast and decisive communication in incidents where quick action is necessary. This manifests in many ways, such as in fire escapes, alarms, and lighting on emergency vehicles and equipment. Their design has seen few changes throughout history, but what is the science that drives these choices? How exactly does lighting appeal to the reptilian instincts of people?   There are two defining types of emergency lighting: active and passive. Active lighting typically refers to lighting on emergency vehicles, which function in response to danger or a hazard, whereas passive lighting has a more latent purpose, making people aware of hazards and exits where there is no immediate danger. The latter’s most common form is in emergency exit lighting, the kind you would expect to see above fire escapes. Designs for these signs differ slightly from country to country, but they all serve the express purpose of alerting people in buildings to the nearest and safest exit in the event of a fire or similar event that requires prompt evacuation. Even the mere mention of this sign conjures a similar idea in everyone’s mind: an androgynous stickman in motion, often towards a doorway, often illuminated in green. This design wasn’t homogenised until 1987, with the “running man” design created by Japanese graphic designer Yukio Ota that is now used primarily in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and Americas regions.   To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here. Big Interview – Robert Pegg

Fire Buyer gets the chance to speak to Robert Pegg, Managing Director and Founder of Fire Trucks 4 Africa  Could you introduce yourself and what you do ?  I am the founder and Managing Director of Fire Trucks for Africa (Pty) Ltd. a company registered in South Africa.  We sell new and used fire trucks, ambulances, specialised vehicles and related equipment to meet a customer’s requirements.  How did you start out in the industry ?  I started in the industry in 1995, when I was still Chief Fire Officer of the City of East London Fire and Rescue Brigade, South Africa.  I could not get budget approval from the Council to purchase a new fire truck so I made enquiries in the UK and got approval to purchase a used ex UK Fire Brigade appliance.  The Council were so impressed with the fire engine that we purchased a second one soon after.  When other Fire Services in South Africa heard about it they also wanted to purchase, so I started the business along with a partner.  Why do African fire services require more support than any other service ?  Most African fire services are part of the local government services rendered to their communities.  They do not get government financial assistance, which is a huge problem when rendering a 24 hour service.  In South Africa we used to have a 2 shift system of 24 hours on, 24 hours off, with firemen doing duties as ambulancemen as well.  New labour laws introduced resulted in a 4 shift system, same as in the UK, which had a huge effect on staff costs.  The situation still exists today and with the economic environment in most African countries, as much support as possible is needed.  I introduced a “Fire Service Levy” in East London which was a small amount added to the Council bill on every residential and business premises.  This income prevented the closure of a fire station and the levy still exists today.  Fire engines are no easy product to ship, especially across Africa.  How did you overcome this obstacle ?  I arrange shipment of the vehicles to the most suitable port in the country of destination.  If the country is inland then I arrange the necessary transport, or the customer arranges collection and drives them to the destination.  What are some of the complications faced with supporting African fire services ?  African fire services have much different requirements… To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here. ILUS Expands its Wildfires Growth Strategy

ILUS International Inc is a Mergers and Acquisitions company focused on acquiring and growing public safety and technology-based companies across the globe. With signed Letters of Intent to acquire two wildfire equipment manufacturers, and in line with upcoming subsidiary up list plans, the company is gearing up extensive manufacturing facilities for wildland firefighting equipment and specialist vehicles in Serbia. In 2022, extreme wildfires have swept across huge swathes of land all over the world, destroying homes and threatening livelihoods. The frequency and severity of wildfires has increased and with globally increasing temperatures and an increased onslaught of droughts; the momentum is showing no signs of slowing. Some reports show that annually, wildfires cause as many as 400,000 global deaths, millions of injuries and billions in property and business costs. It is estimated that the cost of damage from wildfires is as much as 1-2% of GDP in some high-income countries. ILUS’ emergency response subsidiary, Emergency Response Technologies (ERT), is rolling out acquisition and manufacturing plans which will soon make it the leading global wildland firefighting technology manufacturer and solution provider. As part of several acquisitions which are underway for the subsidiary, the company is in the process of completing the acquisition of two companies which specialize in the manufacture of wildland firefighting equipment. Both companies are already prominent wildfire equipment manufacturers and together, they hold the most extensive global distribution network. To further accelerate the growth of the acquisitions, ILUS has agreed plans to open new state-of-the-art wildland firefighting equipment manufacturing facilities in Serbia. The Serbian facility will primarily manufacture wildland firefighting tools, pumps, and specialist vehicles. The Serbian manufacturing plant will incorporate large manufacturing facilities for E-Raptor commercial EV manufacturing, Replay Solutions urban mining, FireBug firefighting vehicle and equipment manufacturing, Wildfire equipment manufacturing, and specialist drone manufacturing. Each division receives its own substantial government incentives. The additional wildland firefighting equipment manufacturing facilities will be complemented by two further specialist engineering and manufacturing acquisitions in New Jersey, USA and in the North of England, United Kingdom. Both of these acquisitions are also in their final stages, forming part of the achievement of ERT’s next significant milestone. “It’s absolutely imperative that we accelerate our expansion into the wildfire arena. With governments spending billions every year to combat wildfires, it’s certainly time for us to ramp up our dedicated wildfire equipment manufacturing capability to adequately supply what will soon be the world’s largest wildfire equipment distribution network. Our patented water saving technology will be complemented by patented wildland firefighting tools and equipment which is already proving instrumental in combatting wildfires. Given the plans we are rolling out, I am confident that ILUS will be the industry leader in wildland firefighting by the end of 2023. Westfield Stratford City to launch new safety hub

Visitors to one of the busiest shopping centres in Europe will soon be able to leave with free fire safety advice as well as their purchases. Westfield Stratford City has temporarily donated the use of a retail unit to London Fire Brigade to become the Newham Safety Centre – a hub for shoppers and visitors to the centre to get free information from London’s emergency services partners. The Brigade has joined together with Westfield and Newham Council to launch the venture on September 9th – Emergency Services Day. London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe will officially open the centre on the day. The unit will be open for a month and will act as a drop-in centre for visitors to learn more about fire safety as well as get information from the council, the Metropolitan Police Service and the London Ambulance Service (LAS). Station Commander at Stratford Fire Station, Chris Kendall, has worked closely with partners to bring the concept together. He said: “We very rarely get the opportunity to do something like this and are very grateful to Westfield Stratford City for donating the space to us. “The shopping centre sees hundreds of thousands of visitors each week, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for us and our partners to speak to members of our community we may not otherwise come into contact with. “We really want our communities to see the face of London Fire Brigade and it will be great for people to be able to walk in and have a chat with firefighters and learn about what we do. We will also give them advice on how to improve fire safety at their home or work. “Newham is one of London’s most diverse boroughs and working together with our communities, we are aiming to increase awareness of fire safety and ultimately, reduce fires. We are also supporting our partners to help residents with any other issues or concerns they may have.” Each day, visitors will be able to get free fire safety advice, find out more about recruitment, sign up to book a Home Fire Safety Visit or complete our online Home Fire Safety Checker tool. In addition, throughout the month, there will be the chance to meet some other teams from within the Brigade, including the Education Team, the Drone Team, the Fire Cadets and our Fire Investigation dogs. A full schedule of specific events and opening times will be released nearer to the launch. Other services on offer at set times include the community resuscitation trainers from LAS, who will show the public how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator when someone suffers a cardiac arrest. Everyone who is trained will have the opportunity to be signed up as a “London Lifesaver” – people who know how to save a life and – crucially – have the confidence to save someone in cardiac arrest. Hochiki Italia chosen for prestigious winery

In the heart of Franciacorta, at the top of the hill overlooking Bornato, sits the historic headquarters of the Società Agricola Monte Rossa srl. Owned by the Rabotti family since 1972, the Winery is famous for its fine wines that can satisfy even the most demanding palates. Producing 500,000 bottles per year and with 70 hectares of managed vineyards, Monte Rossa is considered a leader for the quality level of the Franciacorta wines it produces. Last May, the new Winery by Monte Rossa was inaugurated – just a few kilometres from the historical headquarters. This was an ambitious project, using the latest in wine making technology, that also included an innovative fire detection system designed with the support of the installation company Eurodue srl of Brescia, a leading distributor of fire-fighting equipment and Hochiki dealer. Just like many other wineries in Italy, and indeed around the world, Monte Rossa is made up of different buildings for processing, storage, and packaging, which are mostly made of reinforced concrete and masonry. In terms of fire, the room that is the most at risk is the storage and packaging areas, since copious quantities of combustible materials are often stored in this room. In the wine industry, substances (such as nitrogen) contained in pressure vessels (cylinders) are commonly used, so particular care must be taken when using them, and the produces must ensure the room can be sealed in an emergency, to avoid explosions and fires. The new fire detection system was to cover an area of 20,000Sqm, divided across four levels with indoor and outdoor areas. The automatic and manual fire detection systems were installed in offices, laboratory, vinification areas, the Barrique cellar, the “sur lattes” bottle ageing rooms and the disgorging and bottling areas. The new Hochiki fire detection system also controls the fire doors of the compartmentalised processing and production areas of the building. Products chosen to protect the building, contents, staff and visitors include Hochiki’s SCI Sensors which are part of the ESP (Intelligent Range) which are trusted worldwide to reduce false alarms and allow systems to be tailored to achieve optimum performance. Ezio Danese, Project Manager at Hochiki Italia explained: ‘The UNI 9795 standard requires the installation of a short-circuit isolator for each zone in a building. SCI detectors with integrated isolator and various installed devices such as call points and I/O modules with double isolator ensure that the system complies with the regulatory requirements, without having to install additional isolators. This is definitely an advantage for the installer.” Visual Alarm Devices (VADs) were also installed. These were a key component to the install because they provide a visual indication of an alarm condition, essential for areas where the public might be visiting, or in areas where staff might be wearing ear defenders. Filippo Piubeni, co-owner of Eurodue srl, commented: “It is always a pleasure to be able to complete such an important fire detection system project. We are proud to have made secure a site such as the Monte Rossa Winery, which is not only technologically advanced but equally linked to the winemaking tradition of the Franciacorta region. This top-quality system will provide the best possible protection for staff and the facility’s many visitors. The system was installed by the company Bignetti Salvato and carefully programmed by FYS srl di Gregorelli Francesco, Hochiki’s Technical Assistance Centre, which was able to optimise the various operational requirements in accordance with the project and current regulations.
