ASFP expands team

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has announced the expansion of its team to further strengthen its member support, with the newly extended team set take forward new initiatives and develop a range of new technical and competency services. Tariq Malik has joined the ASFP in the new role of Quality Assurance and Quality Manager. Malik will be responsible for producing and managing a new umbrella quality mark scheme for ASFP members and further developing our Competency Pathway. He will also help to steer the Association through the ISO 9001 accreditation process and investigate the potential for additional certification schemes that will add value to ASFP and our members. He brings experience of working in compliance and as a laboratory operations and quality manager. He also spent two years at TRADA Technology as a project co-ordinator. Sadiyah Begum has been appointed as the new Technical Assistant, providing administrative and operational support to our existing technical and regulatory affairs officers. This new role forms part of the ASFP’s succession planning strategy and will develop further as Begum’s skills and knowledge of passive fire protection grow. Begum has a Chemical Engineering degree, a Level 3 in Technology Entrepreneurship: Lab to Market and a foundation degree in Combined Engineering, the study of Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Andy Tyrrell has been appointed as Training and Events Executive, providing maternity cover for Georgina Fennell. He is an accomplished Events Manager with a strong background in organising events ranging from award ceremonies, exhibitions, business-to-business meetings, networking forums, seminars, conferences and large-scale outdoors events. He previously worked for organisations including Brighton and Hove City Council, Silverstone Race Circuit and the International Wine Challenge. Welcoming them to the ASFP team, ASFP Business Manager Mike Ward commented: “We are thrilled to welcome Tariq, Sadiyah and Andy to the ASFP team. In these exciting new roles, they will be instrumental in developing new services to support our members. Firefighters at Grenfell now diagnosed with terminal cancer

Up to a dozen firefighters who tackled the blaze at Grenfell Tower have been diagnosed with terminal cancer. According to reports, the cancers are understood to be mainly digestive cancers and leukaemia. Firefighters and survivors from the disaster have called for medical screenings as a list of rescuers who went to the west London fire in 2017 and have cancer is being drawn up. Strokes, heart disease and kidney failure are also understood to have been recorded among the heroes – possibly due to the physical toll on their bodies during the tragedy. “We are expecting some really depressing data to be revealed soon. It’s shocking,” a fire service source told the Mirror. Some of the 1,300 firefighters thought to have attended the scene were left in their contaminated suits for more than 10 hours while others were in a smoke-filled basement for up to six hours. Firefighters ran out of air and could have breathed in smoke. Analysis carried out on the debris found there were heightened concentrations of chemicals that cause cancer and proven carcinogens within 200 metres of the tower, the paper said. Responders were also seen outside the tower in the days after the blaze without protective kit, with some experts fearing toxins could have been even worse for people in the wake of the blaze. Meanwhile, research this week found firefighters are twice as likely to end up being diagnosed with cancer if they find soot in their nose or throat, and the same rate applies to those who stay in their often contaminated kit for more than four hours after a fire. Riccardo la Torre, Fire Brigades Union national official, said: “This vital research proves that firefighters are suffering and dying from cancer, strokes, heart disease, and mental ill health as a result of going to work and protecting the public. “We now know that firefighters are exposed to health and life-threatening contaminants as a result of their occupation, and certainly would have been at an incident the size and scale of the Grenfell Tower Fire. “However, firefighters are left in the dark due to the lack of regular health surveillance and proper monitoring of exposures in the UK. “Due to this inaction by the government and fire bosses, the Fire Brigades Union is commissioning further research to help us demand proper protection and support for our members who attended Grenfell, and for firefighters all over the UK.” David Badillo, the first firefighter who went in, said: “On a personal level it’s very worrying. I’ve got two young kids and I want to see them grow up. “I’ve been scanned and nothing’s come up, thankfully, so far, but you don’t know what could happen in the future.” Another firefighter said he felt suicidal and had been left with scarred lungs. “I’ve heard loads of guys and girls have been sick with the ‘Grenfell cough’ and I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life,” he said. The Grenfell tragedy left 72 people dead and set off a series of inquiries into the response and building safety. The youngest victim was just six months old. Other buildings’ cladding has been reevaluated after the fire, with residents calling for them to be removed and waking watches being set up outside some properties. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Our firefighters must be as safe as possible when doing their jobs and we are currently involved in two studies to investigate the possible impact of contaminants on health, including one directly linked to the Grenfell Tower fire. “All firefighters and officers who attended Grenfell have been invited to take part in the research project, which carefully monitors their health even after they retire or leave the service. WFCA announces alliance with Milliman

The Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) has entered a strategic alliance with Milliman, risk management experts, to drive down risk in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). Milliman has an established expertise in WUI risk analysis through extensive work for its property insurance clients. Together, the organisations have the confidence, experience, and humility, to recognise the complexity and consequential magnitude of the WUI problem, including requiring the external expertise. The WFCA said that WUI communities are facing, and will continue to face for decades to come, extraordinary wildfire threats from a perfect storm of ecologic, economic, and climatologic forces, and it is impossible to “suppress” our way out of these conditions. Instead, they hope to induce persistent resilience in WUI communities through the adoption and maintenance of evidence-based mitigations at scale. The Association said that there is shared interest between the fire and insurance professions of zero property loss to property owners from the peril of wildfire is powerful and laid down its intent to bookend support for effective mitigations between them and minimise the barriers to implementation by property owners through public and private means. WFCA Executive Director, Jeff Johnson said: “Milliman is a preeminent worldwide leader in the insurance and risk space. We can only rely on best of class collaborators like Milliman, who offer actuarial projections into the future, to help engineer our way out of the current wildfire property loss trajectory.  We have established this strategic alliance after several years of tightly focused tactical collaboration with Milliman that has consistently yielded high quality and implementable results within the property insurance space.” Nancy Watkins, a principal and consulting actuary with Milliman, added: “At the end of the day actuaries and fire chiefs are trying to solve the same problem – to understand wildfire risk and figure out the best ways to reduce it. With this alliance, we’re combining the WFCA’s on-the-ground leadership with Milliman’s deep insurance and modeling expertise to create an innovative and holistic approach to measuring, communicating, and reducing wildfire risk.” Bringing our combined expertise to bear, WFCA and Milliman will help mitigation efforts evolve from analysis to intelligent management and purposeful disruption of the fire pathways that enable disastrous conflagration in WUI communities. Study finds firefighters more susceptible to cancer

A new study commissioned by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and independently carried out by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), has found that firefighters’ mortality rate from all cancers is 1.6 times higher than the general population. The same study also revealed that firefighters are dying from heart attack at five times the rate of the general public and almost at three times the rate from a stroke. The study was led by Fire Buyer Live speaker and UCLan Professor Anna Stec and was carried out by obtaining mortality records from the National Records of Scotland. The results are relevant to the United Kingdom as a whole due to the same conditions faced by firefighters in Scotland and the rest of the UK, with operational procedures consistent across the whole of the country. The research also shows the mortality rates for certain types of cancer are significantly higher in firefighters, including: Prostate – 3.8 times higher Leukaemia – 3.17 times higher Oesophageal – 2.42 times higher In instances where cancer with an unknown origin has spread, the rate was 6.37 times higher than the general population. The excess cancer mortality observed in Scottish firefighters for several types of cancer are likely linked to different kinds of exposures, and/or fire toxins. Cancers of the oesophagus and digestive organs, for example, point to at a potentially significant contribution from ingestion, which may occur when firefighters swallow mucus in which fire effluent has become trapped, or if they have eaten food with contaminated hands. Meanwhile, mortality rates from leukaemia cancer are linked to exposure to other chemicals such as benzene from contact with skin or inhalation. The study concluded that health monitoring for firefighters; reducing their exposures from contaminants at their workplace; and financial and medical support for those already affected are urgently needed. “We need legislation” Riccardo la Torre, Fire Brigades Union national officer, said: “This is a study that should horrify fire services and the government. This is about firefighters dying who did not need to. We know that there are clear ways we can make things better for firefighters. We need health surveillance. We need monitoring of exposures. We need legislation that will ensure that affected firefighters are given the compensation they deserve. At the moment we are sorely lacking in all of these areas. It is high time that ends. We cannot lose any more firefighters unnecessarily. Lives are being lost amongst our friends and colleagues and it must stop. We need to catch problems early and mitigate problems early.” Professor Anna Stec, Professor in Fire Chemistry and Toxicity at UCLan, said: “This is the first study of its kind in UK and the research brings to light the wide range of occupational hazards that firefighters face. It’s important that firefighters can continue to do their jobs as safely as possible, and the research shows that measures such as health monitoring and reducing exposure from contaminants at the workplace will play an important part in protecting firefighters.” The issue has also been raised in the Scottish Parliament, with Maggie Chapman MSP bringing a motion to Parliament and both Chapman and Pauline McNeill MSP raising the issue at First Minister’s Questions. UK leisure centre protected by Comelit-PAC

A new multi-million pound leisure centre owned by Great Yarmouth Borough Council is fire safe, thanks to a partnership approach with Secur-It specifying Comelit-PAC’s integrated solution.  The new £26m Marina Centre leisure complex on Great Yarmouth’s seafront, was designed to replace the old 1980s built centre.  With work starting in January 2021, it reopened in August 2022. Operated by Freedom Leisure, the new facility boasts a six-lane swimming pool, learner pool and aqua play area with flumes, a 120-station gym, a four court sports hall, 10m indoor climbing zone, three studios and community spaces. Says Freedom Leisure Area Manager Martin Marsh: ‘The opening of our new centre is a very exciting chapter for Great Yarmouth, and a significant investment that we are thrilled to present to our guests.  Whilst its core objective is to offer the latest and greatest facilities; it’s integral that it can be enjoyed in a fire safe and secure environment. “We worked in partnership with the main contractors, right from the early stages of the design, and specification of fire safety was a key priority.  The team could offer advice, recommendations and practical support on how and where to install measures to blend with their surroundings, without affecting the experience for our staff and guests.” Fire safety is one of the biggest challenges presented to large leisure complexes, to enable balancing a welcoming and open environment that doesn’t compromise on the safety or security of guests. Main contractors Morgan Sindall worked with Secur-It right from initial design processes to incorporate Comelit-PAC’s fire safety solutions. This included integrating the fire safety with the access control, turnstile and security services alongside the PA system. Arnaud Marosi, Secur It Commercial Director added: “By specifying Comelit-PAC at The Marina Centre, we could present a fire system that balances offering a high performance life safety solution, without interfering with the natural flow of a busy leisure centre. “With excellent technical support available, we were able to integrate seamlessly with the security and PA system to enable staff to speed up response time and advise guests about the safest emergency route.  We could also install around the facilities without impacting on look or feel.  The result is a wonderful example of a new complex that is already making a big impact on its community, secure in the knowledge it’s doing so with all due care and attention to fire safety.” In total, for the Marina Leisure Centre complex, the 20 zone fire safety system specified from Comelit-PAC included a 4 loop addressable panel, a repeater and 383 devices which included detectors, call points, sounders and visual alarm devices. C-TEC protects Welsh heritage building

C-TEC’s CAST XFP fire system has been installed at a spiritual retreat in Llangollen, North Wales. Located in Ceiriog Valley, Tan-Y-Garth Hall is a Grade II listed house built in 1915. Hochiki Europe advise on preventing false alarms

If you are the responsible person for a commercial building, including shared areas in houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), blocks of flats and maisonettes, you are required by law to ensure the equipment and procedures are in place to detect, alert and notify all occupants of the building to act in the event of a fire. This is to ensure that, should there be a fire, it is easily detectable so that those inside the building are alerted as soon as possible to evacuate and that the fire brigade have the required time and information to stop the fire from spreading. The insurance policies for commercial properties may be invalid if it becomes evident that the fire detection and alarm system on the premises was inadequate. It is also worth noting that any device and/or system could trigger a false alarm if it is not properly installed, not fit for the environment or not well maintained. Any false alarm can lead to lost time in production, fines from local fire brigades. Even worse – complacency or loss of confidence in the reliability of the alarm system. Below are some of the considerations building owners, responsible persons and facilities management teams might want to consider when it comes to false alarms and how the compliant installation, and maintenance of your fire detection system can help prevent them. Guidance is provided in the Code of Practice for Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Fire Alarm Systems in non-domestic premises – BS5839 Part 1. This list is not exhaustive, more information can be understood in our most up to date False Alarm Reduction webinar. We always recommend that you trust your fire detection installation and maintenance with a company that is BAFE registered, who only specify products approved to the local standards, and with up-to-date certifications in place. Installation stage Building use – The type of environment will dictate the type of fire detection technology used. For example, a cold store warehouse vs a dry store warehouse will require very different types of fire detection due to the temperatures the devices have to work at. Cable routes – ensuring fire alarm cables are clearly marked and separated from other services will help avoid electrical interference that can trigger a false alarm. Air conditioning – during installation these units are to be avoided when siting detection equipment that relies on the presence of smoke Air ducts – careful consideration is needed here as these can interfere with smoke detectors, potentially drawing smoke away or blowing contaminated air into detectors. Vandalism – when installing detection devices, it is important to make sure they are they out of reach from casual vandalism or direct tampering by building tenants. The BS5839 standard was updated in 2017 to include the recommendation of fitting mechanical covers to call points in public areas – to reduce the temptation for malicious activations. The idea being that to operate the call point, a person needs to lift the cover as well as press the button. Specialist extraction – In some areas such as kitchens, shower rooms, saunas – specialised extraction will need to be employed, to keep detectors free from steam or other contaminants. Other specific environmental considerations regarding air-borne contaminants to consider at installation stage could be: Nursing homes – skin and dust Event spaces – smoke and steam Hotels – aerosols and steam Restaurants – flames and smoke Ongoing maintenance Fire Alarm Control Panel – When it comes to maintenance, there are some things to consider when looking to reduce false alarms. Most importantly, a maintenance contract with a Competent service provider preferably certificated to BAFE SP203 part 1.
