Comelit-PAC Scores for Accrington Stanley Community Trust

Accrington Stanley Football Club Community Trust’s new £2m sports hub, is now fire-safe thanks to the installation of Comelit-PAC’s LogiFire addressable system by GB Integrated Systems. The completion of the state-of-the-art sports and community complex, associated with the world-renowned Accrington Stanley Football Club, promises to improve facilities for up to 20,000 users every year. The hub stands as a multi-purpose site that provides indoor and outdoor facilities for many grassroots clubs, sports groups and local organisations. It is also home to the trust’s charity and a place of learning for around fifty 16,17 and 18-year-olds studying for a career in sport. Says Accrington Stanley’s Community Trust Chief Executive Office, Martin Fearon: “The vision always for the Trust’s new Sports Hub was to demonstrate our commitment and investment not only in grassroots sports but also to creating an inclusive environment. We wanted to offer a great mix of facilities for all sectors of the general public to enjoy. The result is a massive step forward, one that is accessible to everyone and we hope a facility for our community as a whole to be proud of for many years and generations to come.” The main building houses the trust and charity’s 12 full-time and 12 part-time staff along with the 50 BTEC students, many of whom will also volunteer at the hub. The building has a 24-seat and 50-capacity cafeteria for evenings and weekends, two classrooms with a capacity for 24 in each one and a meeting room. There are two rooms for match officials and four large changing rooms. GB Integrated Systems worked closely with the building teams from the early stages of the project, including a requirement to design, supply, install and commission the fire system. Comelit-PAC’s LogiFire solution was selected for its simple installation capability with minimal disruption to the Hub operations, and comprehensive features, designed to ensure rapid and reliable fire detection and response. The installation of the LogiFire fire safety system reflects the club’s and its associated hub, commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards. The addressable panel can be integrated with a building management system to ensure remote monitoring from anywhere, at any time. It is offered with built-in fault-finding features and award-winning devices. NFPA Names Carlos Correia

In a move aimed at bolstering its growth strategy to have a greater impact on advancing safety, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the appointment of international business veteran Carlos Correia as its vice president of strategic initiatives. In his new role, Correia will oversee the association’s business diversification which may include acquisitions, innovation, and scaling businesses in related sectors. “Carlos brings a diverse international business background and a proven ability to steer successful businesses and growth strategies,” said NFPA President and CEO Jim Pauley. “His unique set of skills and experiences will greatly help NFPA widen its impact and reach, furthering our important fire, life, and electrical safety mission.” Correia previously served as vice president and general manager of Assets and Sustainability Performance at Underwriters Laboratories (UL). In this role, he oversaw the company’s digital and consulting business, with a focus on energy transition, healthy buildings, sustainability, and health and safety. Throughout his career, he has led several businesses and units, with some generating revenues exceeding $250 million. Additionally, Correia has extensive international work experience, having lived, and worked in Germany, Japan, and the United States. Correia holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. Henrique in Portugal and an MBA from UBI Business School in Belgium. IAFF welcomes harsher sentences for assaults

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is welcoming proposed legislation that would see harsher sentences come in for those who commit assaults against on-duty firefighters and paramedics. The proposed bill, Bill C-345, was introduced in the House of Commons on 19 June by MP Peter Julian who held a press conference on 5 July with leaders from the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters Association (BCPFFA) alongside members from IAFF to discuss why these greater protections are needed. “It has been disturbing to me to see an increase in the number of assaults and the violence against fire fighters and paramedics,” Julian said, citing examples of recent assaults. The bill builds on existing Criminal Code protections for peace officers, said the IAFF, by adding a definition of first responders that includes firefighters and paramedics and proposing an offence for assaults against a first responder acting in the course of their duties. It also proposes a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment for assault and an increased maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment for aggravated assault. The bill also proposes an automatic first-degree murder charge if an assault led against a firefighter or paramedic leads to their death, which carries the penalty of life imprisonment. “It’s time to include first responders in the same level of protection as peace officers,” said Todd Schierling, President, BCPFFA. “Such provisions serve to help make emergency responders safer when protecting Canadians.” New Westminster Local 256 President Shane Poole echoed the sentiment. “We know our job is inherently dangerous, but when we respond to calls for help, we shouldn’t have to be faced with the potential for violence or assaults.” The IAFF has declared its support for this bill and a separate, private member’s bill that addresses the issue. Bill C-321, introduced by B.C. Conservative MP Todd Doherty in March, would require an assault victim’s status as an on-duty first responder to be considered during sentencing. Phil Gerace joins E-One as Director of Sales

With more than 30 years of sales leadership experience within the fire service, Gerace most recently served as Vice President of Marketing for Task Force Tips, a long-time E-ONE supplier. Prior to that, he spent more than 24 years with KME Fire Apparatus, holding several leadership positions including director of sales and marketing. He also served as a firefighter for 11 years with the Tamaqua, PA Fire Department. Fire-Dex expands in Old Fort, N.C.

Fire-Dex, a rapidly expanding manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE) for first responders, is once again on a growth trajectory, marking the inauguration of a novel production facility in Old Fort, North Carolina. As the fourth significant production hub for the company, the recently established 25,000-square-foot facility in Old Fort, situated at 59 Commerce Street, will assume a crucial role in ensuring top-notch workmanship, expedited shipping, and attentive customer service for the foreseeable future. “While our footprint is rapidly expanding westward, we serve a large portion of the East Coast with many relationships that go back decades,” said John Karban, Vice President of Operations for Fire-Dex. “Old Fort presents a unique opportunity to position critical resources closer to major customers and, at the same time, boost the local economy by keeping a number of jobs in Old Fort.” Fire-Dex’s entrance into Old Fort follows the acquisition of a recently vacated facility dedicated to apparel manufacturing, which had previously provided employment to more than 60 associates. With operations now in full swing within the new space, Fire-Dex has accorded priority to the rehiring of these workers, thereby establishing an exceptional sewing-ready facility equipped with a proficient workforce and adept leadership. “It was late in June when we found out about these jobs and flew our executives to Old Fort the following week,” says Bill Burke, Chairman and Owner of Fire-Dex. “Within 10 days a lease was signed for the facility, and we started the process of bringing these former employees onboard.” “As of last week, we have begun shipping machines to the new location to prepare to set up a Fire-Dex facility and begin training,” says Jordan Shanahan, Old Fort Plant Manager. “We’ve hired 15 associates and plan to hire around 10 more by the quarter’s end, with many of these being former employees at this location. Teledyne FLIR cameras save lives

Firefighting represents an incredibly hazardous and challenging occupation, both physically and mentally. Nonetheless, there’s help at hand: Teledyne FLIR crafted its K-series of thermal imaging cameras, which are not only professional but also budget-friendly. These cameras prove invaluable in supporting firefighters as they navigate through dense smoke, search for hot spots, and measure temperatures from a distance. A prime example of their effectiveness is evident at the Solna Fire Station in Stockholm, Sweden, where the deployment of a FLIR K-series camera recently contributed to saving four lives during a city centre fire. Storstockholms brandförsvar (Greater Stockholm’s fire service) oversees 10 municipalities within the city, including Solna, situated just north of the city centre. When a significant fire erupted downtown, the fire crew from Solna promptly answered the call. “We sent in two smoke divers, both with FLIR K-series cameras,” explains Tomas Bellander, a firefighter and instructor at Solna Fire Station with 22 years of experience. “One smoke diver spotted an elevator with its doors slightly open. His instinct drew him towards the elevator and, upon approach, his FLIR thermal camera showed what looked like an arm in the doorway. It turned out there were four people in that elevator, all of whom were saved by our smoke diver and his FLIR camera.” Similar to other fire stations, Solna has a range of conventional firefighting tools at its disposal, but relies on FLIR thermal imaging cameras to locate fires and pinpoint anyone trapped or in need of assistance. However, while the main application for FLIR cameras at Solna Fire Station is smoke diving, the crew also uses its cameras as part of other rescue activities, such as locating people on train tracks or next to water. “It’s a lot easier than using our own eyes and a flashlight,” says firefighter Simon Zettergren. “We can quickly see if there are any temperature shifts to detect human presence.” Zettergren says Solna Fire Station takes advantage of FLIR K55 high-performance thermal cameras, retaining two in each vehicle. Charging takes place inside the truck. “We typically deploy teams of two smoke divers: one with a hose and the other with a FLIR K55,” he explains. FLIR K55 cameras allow Solna Fire Station to attack fires with better strategy, manoeuvre through smoke more easily and save lives. They display crisp thermal images on a bright LCD, helping Solna’s fire crew to navigate better and expedite critical decisions. “A lot of thoughts go through your head when there’s a real fire,” says Bellander. “You have to execute your strategy while simultaneously receiving commands from the lieutenant and making real-time judgements about situational awareness with limited visibility. The stress factor is high, so you must call upon your equipment and training.
